They don't like the zebra's stripes. Common knowledge, really.
Ono on tsetse flies[src]

Tsetse flies are a species of grub native to the Pride Lands. They are considered a nuisance to most Pride Landers due to their tendency to swarm.

History

Nuisance to the Lion Guard

How can we run with all these flies in our faces?
Fuli on tsetse flies[src]

One day, a herd of cape buffalo fled a swarm of tsetse flies, and the Lion Guard rushed to stop them. Per Ono's advice, they led the cape buffalo toward a nearby water source and cleared some zebras from their path. To their relief, the tsetse flies flew away.

Later, the Lion Guard found Mbeya upside-down in a ditch, and he confessed that he had tried rolling onto his back in order to ward off some tsetse flies. While escorting him to the watering hole, the Guard got swarmed by tsetse flies, only for them to fly away when Thurston approached. This made Ono remember that tsetse flies disliked zebra stripes. Getting an idea, Kion decided to escort both Mbeya and Thurston's herd to the watering hole so as to keep the tsetse flies away.

Shortly afterwards, Madoa tried to find the Lion Guard but got swarmed by tsetse flies. The Guard approached her alongside Thurston, and the tsetse flies flew away. Upon learning from Madoa that Jasiri was in danger, the Guard started to follow her toward the Outlands, only to get swarmed by tsetse flies again. In an effort to keep their path clear, Kion invited Thurston to accompany them and so ward off any tsetse flies.[1]

Physical characteristics

Tsetse flies are small black insects with wings.[1]

Sociocultural characteristics

We're in the Outlands. Tsetse flies like the brush. It's too barren for them out here.
―Ono[src]

Tsetse flies typically travel in large swarms. They prefer living in the brush and so avoid barren spaces like the Outlands. They dislike water and have a particular aversion to zebra stripes.[1]
