After all, a threat to the Pride Lands anywhere is a threat to Pride Landers everywhere! The sable antelope are ready.
Bupu[src]

Bupu's herd is a group of sable antelope led by Bupu. They reside in the Pride Lands.

As part of Kion's effort to unite the Pride Landers against the Outlanders, he gathered them together and trained them to fight as one; this included Bupu's herd. Eventually, Scar's Outlander army attacked the Pride Landers, and Scar revealed himself to them for the first time. Initially, the Pride Landers considered abandoning the Pride Lands, but with some persuasion from Kion, they opted to remain in the kingdom and resist Scar's tyranny.

After seasons of attacks by the Army of Scar on the Pride Lands, King Simba gathered the Pride Landers at Pride Rock to train for an upcoming invasion of the Outlands. The next morning, Bupu's herd joined their fellow Pride Landers in storming the Outlands and defeating Scar's army once and for all.

History

Stuck in mud

We've got antelopes stuck in a mud pool near Chekundu Cliffs.
Ono to Kion[src]

One day, several members of Bupu's herd got stuck in a mud pool near Chekundu Cliffs. As the Lion Guard labored to free them, Ono spotted a sinkhole in the distance and warned Kion that his father, Simba, had fallen in. While Kion left to check on his father, the rest of the Guard freed the sable antelope, with Beshte using his snout to pull them out of the mud.[1]

Attacked by Janja's clan

A herd of antelope is stampeding in the rocky plains!
―Ono[src]

In an effort to fool the Lion Guard, Janja and his cronies, Nne and Tano, began to chase Bupu's herd. However, in the midst of the attack, they hid behind a rock and watched as the Lion Guard ran past, pursuing the herd. While the hyenas doubled back to target a herd of oryxes instead, the Guard caught up to and calmed the sable antelope. Once the herd had settled, Kion surmised that Cheezi and Chungu were behind the incident, as he had caught a whiff of hyena scent while chasing the herd.[2]

Royal Mud Print Ceremony

Bupu's herd attended Hadithi's Royal Mud Print Ceremony at Pride Rock.[3]

Crossing the Flood Plains

All day, they've been telling us what to do. "Get out of the water so you won't drown." "Follow us to higher ground so you won't starve." "Don't get hit by falling rocks." I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of being told what to do!
―Bupu to his herd[src]

After a rainstorm, Ono informed the rest of the Lion Guard that Bupu's herd was refusing to leave their grazing grounds, even though another storm was on the way. Basi suggested that they lead the sable antelope to the other side of the Flood Plains, as Beshte would have made a safe hippo lane by then.

Ono led his teammates to the sable antelope's grazing grounds, where they tried various tactics to convince the herd to leave. Bupu, however, pointed out that they did not wish to leave and ignored all their attempts to dissuade him. In a last-ditch effort, Kion informed the herd that there would be more food away from their drowned grazing grounds, and a female antelope named Boboka urged Bupu to reconsider the Guard's offer. Finally, he relented, and the herd followed the Lion Guard away from their territory.

On their way out of the grazing grounds, Ono spotted a rockslide, and Kion yelled for the herd to stay back. Too late, the rocks fell, separating the Lion Guard from their charges. Kion worried over the herd's condition, but Ono assured him that none of the sable antelope had been injured. He then warned Kion that there was no other way around the rocks and that the storm was closing in fast. In the face of this new setback, Fuli lamented Beshte's absence, but Bunga pointed out that Kion could still use the Roar of the Elders to blow the rocks away. Kion agreed to the idea and climbed to the other side of the rocks in order to avoid harming any of the sable antelope.

After using the Roar to clear the blocked trail, Kion urged the sable antelope to move, but they refused to cooperate. With some harsh insistence from Fuli, they finally agreed to follow the Lion Guard. Together, the Guard and the sable antelope arrived at the Flood Plains, where Boboka and her son entered one of Beshte's newly made hippo lanes. No sooner had they started to cross the Flood Plains when Ono arrived, forbidding the herd entry. Bunga told Ono that Boboka and her son had already entered the Flood Plains, and Ono panicked that they would get lost in the reeds. Taking charge, Kion entered the hippo lanes alongside Ono, while Bunga and Fuli remained with the rest of the herd.

As the herd waited, Bupu lamented not being in his home territory. Fuli attempted to quiet him, but he simply sunk to his knees, which prompted the rest of his herd to do the same. Furious, she shoved him from behind and ordered him to stand up. As she did so, Ono arrived and reacted with shock to her actions.

At that moment, Beshte arrived, to the excitement of his teammates, and Ono marveled at the perfectly straight and true hippo lane that he had created. Bunga announced to the herd that they could safely cross the Flood Plains. Instead of acquiescing, Bupu complained that the herd would get wet if they crossed the Flood Plains, to which Fuli shouted in exasperation that they were already wet. He dared her to continue yelling at them, and she finally backed off, apologizing for her behavior. She then politely asked if the herd would follow the Lion Guard into the hippo lane. To her surprise, Bupu relented and told her that they had only wanted the Guard to be polite to them. He then rallied his herd to follow him into the Flood Plains.

At the same moment, Kion and Ono safely led Boboka and her son out of the hippo lanes. As the sable antelope crossed the Flood Plains, they inadvertently trampled Makuu and his float, saving Basi's and Beshte's lives in the process. Afterwards, they grazed contentedly on the other side of the Flood Plains.[4]

Traveling Baboon Show

Several members of Bupu's herd spectated the Traveling Baboon Show's performances.[5]

Rockslide

One day, Fuli saved several members of Bupu's herd from a rockslide.[6]

Stampede

There's a dead-end canyon up ahead to the left. If we guide the herd there, we can contain them and calm them down!
―Ono on Bupu's herd[src]

After getting spooked by a rockslide, Bupu's herd stampeded across the Pride Lands. Spotting a dead-end canyon in the distance, Ono suggested that the Lion Guard guide the sable antelope there so they would be contained and calm down. The Guard took Ono's advice, inadvertently awakening Makuu and his float from hibernation in the process.[7]

Mzaha's self-exile

Mzaha! Enough! You're disturbing everyone's grazing!
―Bupu[src]

At some point, Mzaha got exiled from Bupu's herd for being too rambunctious. However, when he began disturbing Rafiki at his tree, Fuli requested that Bupu accept him back into his herd. Though initially resistant to the idea, Bupu relented when Fuli asked politely. While with his herd, Mzaha repeatedly disturbed their grazing, and Bupu ordered him to stop, pointing out that antelope were not "silly creatures." Mzaha declared that he knew some silly creatures like himself, then left his herd for good.[8]

Bupu's partnership with Nyuni

Nyuni: Hey, Bupu. Looks like one of the little ones is wandering off.
Bupu: Again? Good catch, Nyuni. I'll take care of it.
—Bupu and Nyuni on Boboka's son[src]

One day, Bupu got his horns stuck in a tree branch, and his herd milled around impatiently for him. Before long, the Lion Guard arrived and theorized how they might free him. Eventually, Kion suggested that they break the branch off at the end. However, as Bunga started to follow Kion's orders, Nyuni intervened and protested that his nest was at the end of the branch. In an effort to please both parties, Kion arranged for the branch to be broken off at the base so that Bupu could carry it around in his horns; that way, he could still lead his herd, while Nyuni could see more of the Pride Lands.

Though Bupu was initially loath to accept Kion's solution, he and Nyuni soon began to work in tandem. At one point, the Lion Guard questioned Bupu and Nyuni on if they knew where Zazu was, but they claimed that they did not. Nyuni then warned Bupu that Boboka's son was wandering away from the herd, and Bupu promptly took care of it.[9]

Tamaa's performance

Boboka and another member of Bupu's herd watched a performance put on by Tamaa the drongo in which he impersonated the voices of his audience.[10]

Kumbuka celebration

Bupu's herd attended the Kumbuka celebration at Pride Rock.[11]

Refusal to shelter Ma Tembo's herd

Beshte, are the antelopes going to kick us out too?
Mtoto on Bupu's herd[src]

Following a fire at Kilio Valley, the Lion Guard sought a temporary home for Ma Tembo and her herd. After the elephants were turned away by both the galagos and the giraffes, Kion appealed to Bupu for help. At first, he accepted the elephants into his grazing grounds, but when they began spraying themselves and the sable antelope with dirt, he protested that their presence in his territory was unacceptable. Kion urged him to wait until the Guard could find a more permanent solution, but he simply kicked the elephants out of his grazing grounds once the Guard had left.[12]

Attacked by the Army of Scar

Looks like they're after some antelope.
―Ono on the Army of Scar attacking Bupu's herd[src]

One day, the Army of Scar invaded the Pride Lands and resolved to attack Bupu's herd. Before they could do so, Ono led the sable antelope to safety in Nyani Grove.[13]

Training with the Lion Guard

Ma Tembo: Bupu, what are you doing here? I didn't realize that Kion had asked other animals to help defend the Pride Lands.
Bupu: Neither did I. Why would he need anyone besides us antelopes?
—Bupu and Ma Tembo[src]

After several Outlander attacks on the Pride Lands, the Pride Landers became particularly uneasy and skittish. One day, Bupu's herd believed that they had spotted a jackal and started to stampede across the Pride Lands. In doing so, they nearly trampled the galagos. Before the herd could cause any harm, the Lion Guard calmed them down, and Kion told Bupu to call for them next time rather than stampede. Reluctantly, Bupu agreed to Kion's request and notified the rest of his herd.

After the incident, the Lion Guard concluded that the Pride Landers must unite against the threat of the Outlanders. While Fuli recruited Bupu's herd, the rest of the Guard gathered Laini's group, Ma Tembo's herd, and Mbeya's crash. As the Pride Landers convened at Pride Rock, Bupu expressed surprise that the Guard had needed any species besides the antelope to help defend the Pride Lands.

For their first exercise, the Lion Guard instructed the Pride Landers to race toward Bunga. As the race began, the larger animals tripped over the galagos and ended up in a heap. Getting an idea, Kion summoned Makuu to help train the Pride Landers, but he proved to be too harsh and ruthless to effectively train them. Eventually, he gave up entirely and resolved to only look after his own float from then on.

Shortly afterwards, the Army of Scar besieged Makuu's watering hole. Though Ono suggested that the Lion Guard rally the Pride Landers to help defend Makuu's float, Kion asserted that they were not ready. Having overheard the discussion, Bupu and his fellow Pride Landers countered that a threat to the Pride Lands anywhere was a threat to Pride Landers everywhere. Relenting, Kion led the Pride Landers in a coordinated defense of Makuu's watering hole.

Together, the Pride Landers stormed the watering hole and fought off the Army of Scar. During the battle, the sable antelope carried the galagos on their heads. Once the Army of Scar had been driven away, Makuu thanked the Pride Landers for their help and vowed to help them should the need ever arise.[14]

Dhahabu's arrival in the Pride Lands

Bupu's herd gathered at Pride Rock to spectate the arrival of Queen Dhahabu.[15]

Scar's revelation to the Pride Landers

The antelopes will be staying as well.
―Bupu[src]

Bupu's herd gathered at Mizimu Grove for Makini's mpando mpaya. In the midst of the event, the Army of Scar attacked, and the Pride Landers worked together to defend themselves. However, when Scar's spirit manifested in a nearby fire and threatened to overtake the entirety of the Pride Lands, they fled in fear. Fuli pursued Bupu's herd and ordered them to stop stampeding moments before they would have run over a cliff.

Once the herds had calmed, they returned to Mizimu Grove. There, Simba confessed that he had had knowledge of Scar's return for some time but had kept it secret for fear of the Pride Landers abandoning their kingdom. When some of the Pride Landers expressed interest in leaving the Pride Lands for good, Simba told them to inform him of their decisions the following morning at Pride Rock. After their conversation with Simba, Bupu was adamant that the sable antelope should leave the Pride Lands.

Come morning, the Pride Landers gathered at Pride Rock to inform Simba of their decisions. Before they could speak, Kion interrupted and implored them to follow him to Mizimu Grove. They did so, and he revealed that Makini's seedling had survived Scar's fire. This inspired them to remain in the Pride Lands and resist Scar's tyranny, including a somewhat reluctant Bupu. The Pride Landers then looked on as Makini planted her seedling.[16]

Battle for the Pride Lands

I'll get the crocs and antelopes.
―Fuli, as the Lion Guard prepares for battle against the Army of Scar[src]

In preparation for an invasion of the Outlands, the Lion Guard gathered the various Pride Lander factions, with Fuli fetching Bupu's herd. Together, the Pride Landers trained at Pride Rock for the upcoming invasion. That night, the Army of Scar set fire to Pride Rock, and Scar's spirit manifested in the flames and implored the Pride Landers to abandon their home.

Once Scar had vanished, Bupu proposed that they call off the attack, but Kion pointed out that Scar was merely trying to scare them. Bupu replied that his tactics were working. Just then, Janja approached and revealed a way to defeat Scar's spirit using Kion's Roar. This convinced Simba that they should proceed with the invasion.

The next morning, Bupu's herd joined their fellow Pride Landers in invading the Outlands. During the battle, the sable antelope carried the galagos on their heads. Through their combined efforts, the Lion Guard and the Pride Landers destroyed Scar's spirit and defeated his army, after which the Pride Landers returned home.[17]

Lion Guard's journey to the Tree of Life

As the Lion Guard departed the Pride Lands for the Tree of Life, Bupu's herd gathered at Pride Rock to bid them farewell.[17]

Battle of the Lion Guards

Bupu's herd spectated the Battle of the Lion Guards.[18]
