Baboons! You're always up to trouble. Baboons! You make that trouble double.
Fuli[src]

Baboons are a species of animal native to the Pride Lands. They feed on baobab blossoms and fruits, and are preyed upon by hyenas, jackals, and vultures.

History

Simba's presentation

Baboons attended the presentation of Simba, the prince heir of Pride Rock.[1]

Kiara's presentation

Baboons attended the presentation of Kiara, the princess heir of Pride Rock.[2]

Conflict with Fuli

And as for you guys, I said I'm sorry. I wasn't tryna be mean when I said you look funny when you scratch your heads.
―Fuli to the baboon leader's troop[src]

When Fuli told the baboon leader's troop that they looked funny when they scratched their heads, they chased her across the Pride Lands. Eventually, Beshte intervened, stepping into the baboons' path and knocking them to the ground. Once the troop had calmed, Fuli apologized to them, and they accepted her apology and fainted.[3]

Habitat disruption

Mom and Dad are not gonna be happy to find Pride Rock full of baboons.
―Kiara, when baboons invade Pride Rock[src]
TheRiseofMakuu395

When Makuu invaded Big Springs, he caused a habitat disruption that forced the baboons out of their forest. Zazu reported the incident to Kiara, and she, in turn, appealed to the Lion Guard for help. Later, the baboons invaded Pride Rock, and Kiara implored the Lion Guard to solve the problem before Simba and Nala returned home.

Eventually, Kion convinced Makuu to vacate Big Springs, and the Pride Landers returned to their respective habitats.[4]

Rainstorm

Baboons, you gotta come down. It's not safe up there.
―Kion, when the baboons refuse to leave a tree during a rainstorm[src]

During a rainstorm, the baboon leader's troop took shelter in a tree on the edge of a cliff. The Lion Guard begged the baboons to come down, but the baboon leader refused to cooperate until the rains stopped. Eventually, Kion grew so desperate that he sent Bunga into the tree to force the baboons down. Bunga subsequently climbed up to the baboons and passed gas to flush them out of the tree.[5]

Kupatana

When Reirei's pack moved into the Pride Lands, they began to steal food from the Pride Landers, including a baboon.

Later, several baboons attended the Kupatana celebration. In the midst of the celebration, the jackals attacked the Pride Landers, and Goigoi attempted to catch a baboon, only for Fuli to intercept the attack. Eventually, the Pride Landers managed to fend off the jackals, and Simba exiled them back to the Outlands. With the danger abated, the Kupatana celebration continued, and the Pride Landers began to feast on baobab blossoms.[6]

Lion Guard's rescue of Gumba

Beshte! We need your help, please!
Gumba, after Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu attack him and his friends[src]

While playing with his friends, the young baboon Gumba was attacked by Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu. After failing to catch the young animals, the hyenas targeted Mtoto as the slowest. The other young animals warned Beshte about the situation, and he, in turn, rescued Mtoto and reunited him with his friends.[7]

Lion Guard's rescue of the baby baboon

That's not our baby. *hoots* He belongs to our, uh... *hoots* ...neighbors.
―The baboon leader on the baby baboon[src]

One day, Mzingo and his parliament chased a baby baboon through the Pride Lands. Before they could harm the infant, the Lion Guard arrived and drove them off. After the attack, the Lion Guard resolved to return the baby baboon to his troop, and Kion tasked Fuli with delivering him to Nyani Grove. Though reluctant, Fuli carried the baby baboon to Nyani Grove and offered him to the baboon leader. Upon recognizing the baby baboon, the baboon leader informed Fuli that he belonged to a troop of baboons who lived at Mapango Cliffs.

After her encounter with the baboon leader, Fuli carried the baby baboon to Mapango Cliffs. Along the way, she hid him from Mzingo and his parliament. However, upon the two's arrival at Mapango Cliffs, the vultures attacked, and Fuli worked alongside the cliff baboons to drive them off.[8]

Savannah Summit

I was having a perfectly nice time when suddenly this...this hippo with a horn bumps into me.
―The baboon leader on Mbeya[src]

Simba invited several Pride Lander leaders, including the baboon leader, to the Savannah Summit. To launch the event, the leaders met Simba at Pride Rock. Though they were wary of Makuu's involvement in the Summit, Simba and Zazu urged them to be cooperative and fair-minded, and led them to Mizimu Grove for the start of the event.

During the Summit, the Lion Guard overheard Zazu yelling for help and followed the noise to where Rafiki was painting a portrait of the baboon leader and Mbeya. Upon being questioned by the Lion Guard, Mbeya explained that Zazu had called him clumsy, but the baboon leader clarified that it had been he who had called Mbeya clumsy. He then accused Mbeya of having bumped into him. The two began to argue with each other until Beshte stepped in-between them and encouraged them to make amends. This caused the baboon leader to relent and apologize to Mbeya.

That evening, the Pride Lander leaders gathered at Mizimu Grove, where Kion announced that Makuu had lost his life in a trap. Before long, Makuu revealed himself to the Pride Landers and asserted that he had joined the Summit in an effort to help his float and the Pride Lands but had received nothing but hostility in return. Instead of reacting with anger, however, he prompted Simba to continue the Summit, and negotiations were reengaged.[9]

Traveling Baboon Show

My name's Uroho, and we are the Traveling Baboon Show!
Uroho introduces his troop to the Pride Landers[src]

During a patrol, the Lion Guard followed a crowd of Pride Landers to where the Traveling Baboon Show was putting on a performance. After the show, the Lion Guard complimented the baboons on their performance, and Uroho gladly accepted their praise. However, when Kion mentioned that he was Simba's son, Uroho and his fellows hastily vacated the premises.

Shortly after the Lion Guard's encounter with the Traveling Baboon Show, they discovered that food was being stolen from the Pride Landers. In an attempt to catch the thief in action, the Lion Guard attended another performance by Uroho and his fellows. During the show, Ono caught Mwevi and Mwizi stealing food while Uroho was distracting the Pride Landers and exposed their crimes to the crowd. Though the Lion Guard attempted to apprehend the baboons, they escaped into the Outlands.

While in the Outlands, the baboons got attacked by Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu. Just in time, the Lion Guard arrived and drove the hyenas off. To show their gratitude to the Lion Guard for having saved their lives, Uroho, Mwevi, and Mwizi returned all the stolen food to the Pride Landers.[10]

Search for a new water source

Now, they're after the baboons that have started following the elephants.
―Ono on an attack by Janja's clan[src]

The baboon leader and his troop began following Ma Tembo as she searched for a new water source. In the midst of the search, Janja's clan attacked the baboons, and the Lion Guard arrived to save them. Once the hyenas had been defeated, Kion questioned the baboons on their behavior, and the baboon leader explained that they had been following Ma Tembo. Ono added that baboons always followed elephants to new water sources during the dry season.

Later, Ma Tembo located a new water source, and the baboons happily drank from the water hole.[11]

Christmas

You know, we need some baboons too.
―Fuli on the Christmas celebration[src]

One day, Fuli attempted to gather berries for Bunga's Christmas celebration but could not reach them. Noticing her struggles, Uroho, Mwevi, and Mwizi approached and fetched the berries for her. Fuli then asked them to participate in Bunga's Christmas celebration, and they accepted. Later, the baboons participated in the "The Twelve Ways of Christmas" performance.[12]

Destruction of Nyani Grove

Shujaa, wait! Baboons...live in those trees.
―Kion, as Shujaa destroys Nyani Grove[src]

In an attempt to help the Lion Guard reach the Army of Scar, Shujaa cleared a path through Nyani Grove. Though Kion warned him that baboons lived there, he disturbed their trees and caused them to stampede toward some cape buffalo. Kion then ordered Fuli to calm the baboons down.[13]

Marriage of Kovu and Kiara

Baboons attended the marriage ceremony of Kovu and Kiara.[2]

Physical characteristics

A baboon is a moderately sized animal with a long tail and five-fingered hands and feet.[2] Most baboons are brown, with pink hands, feet, and faces as well as lighter-furred chests. Some baboons have ruffs or head tufts.[3] Baboons can have black, blue, brown, gray, or green eyes.[2][8]

Sociocultural characteristics

Baboons! Always throwing fruit.
―Fuli[src]

Baboons live in troops.[3] In the Pride Lands, they are known to reside in forested areas like Nyani Grove or elevated areas like Mapango Cliffs.[8] Baboons primarily feed on fruits, though they have been known to eat baobab blossoms as well.[6] Hyenas,[11] jackals,[6] and vultures prey upon baboons. Baboons are known for their excitable and mischievous natures, and particularly enjoy throwing fruit.[8] They can also be quite stubborn, to the point that they put themselves in dangerous predicaments.[5] They are represented by the baboon leader at the Savannah Summit.[9]
