Synopsis

New Beginnings Arc

Together with Mira, Hilarius protested to their slave owner against his decision to throw Julian overboard after discovering him as a stowaway on the ship. After Mira offered to split her rations to Julian to compensate for the limited supply for each slave, Hilarius offered to take her place due to her being pregnant. Following Julian's acceptance onto the ship, Hilarius and the other slaves buck with him and listen to his story as to how he came into slavery. The following day, Hilarius inquires with a crew member about the possibility of exempting Mira from cleaning duty due to her pregnancy. However, he is informed that those who do not work will not receive food. Later, he declines Mira's offer of food, prompting another slave to encourage him to eat in order to maintain his health while laboring with the rest of the slaves.[1]

After the slave ship unexpectedly enters the Alode Zone, Hilarius and the rest of the slaves are called out on deck. After questioning the necessity of their presence on board, Hilarius is stabbed in the chest by a crew member who, along with the rest of the crew, had been commanded by the captain to murder the slaves in order to profit by the time they reach land. Hilarius then urges all the slaves to run before succumbing to his wound.[2]

Legacy

Upon his death, the life of Hilarius, as well as the lives of the 99 slaves who perished on the ship, were bestowed upon Julian. This occurred after he implored the Sea to give him proof that the slaves' lives had not been in vain.

After his demise at the hands of Arkos, Julian found himself seated beside Hilarius, close to a fire by the sea. Feeling Julian's inclination to give up, Hilarius comforts him, saying it's fine to rest momentarily, but he must eventually stand and continue his battle against injustice, despite any challenges that may arise. He also apologizes for the heavy burden Julian bears, only for Julian to reassure him that he has willingly chosen this path. Hilarius then moves toward the sea, announcing that his life that was given to Julian is the first to go, which he interprets as the world's way of letting go of the old first, and reassures Julian that his strength will remain with him even if his life is no longer with him. Before walSupreme Lord off into the sea, Hilarius reveals his name to Julian at the young man's behest and exhorts him to triumph once he is resurrected.[3]
