David "Dave" Ichabod Douglas is the main protagonist of the 2006 Disney Remake The Shaggy Dog.
Dave is a workaholic lawyer who doesn't spend time with his family, but a 300 year old sacred bearded collie with immortality in his DNA named Khyi Yang Po shows up and gives his life an unimaginable turn, the dog is captured to make a immortality serum but he manages to escape and is found by Dave's daughter and names him "Shaggy".
Dave's family accepts Shaggy, but Dave doesn't want to have him, but Shaggy realizes that Dave is useful so Shaggy bites him, which causes his DNA to enter Dave's body and his new canine DNA begins to mutate his human DNA and Dave transforms into a dog.
Dave begins to live his new life as a dog, having become the family pet, enjoying having transformed into a dog, playing with his new owners and approaching them as a dog, this makes Dave realize that he was estranged from his family as a man and decides to fix it while his family has no idea that Dave had taken over their pet's position.
He is portrayed by Tim Allen, who also voiced Buzz Lightyear and portrayed Tim "The Toolman" Taylor in Home Improvement and Mike Baxter in Last Man Standing.

Dave acts like a dog due to the mutation of his DNA, he likes to run on all fours, bark, stick out his tongue, catch sticks and toys, chase cats and all the typical canine behaviors, in the presence of stimuli, Dave lets his canine instinct take control and the adrenaline turns him into a dog, but he can become a human if he calms down, which he can do by falling asleep or meditating.
Dave is a sacred and playful dog who enjoys spending time with his owners, playing and eating, upon becoming a dog, Dave realizes that becoming the family pet was his destiny and he is proud to have become the dog he is and enjoys spending time with his family.
Dave used to be a busy workaholic, but his mutation opened his eyes and transformed him into a close and attentive father and husband to his family.
Biography
Dave is a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles, California and is prosecuting social studies teacher and activist Justin Forrester for firebombing the pharmaceutical corporation Grant & Strictland. Forrester denies doing so, but claims that Grant & Strictland has been engaging in illegal animal testing. The case distances Dave from his daughter, Carly, one of Forrester's students, who believes that Forrester is innocent.
Dave works on the case alongside Ken (his friend and co-worker), another ambitious assignment that takes the workaholic lawyer away from his wife, Rebecca, and children, Carly and Josh, who crave his attention.
What Dave doesn't know is that the evil Dr. Marcus Kozak has stolen a sacred bearded collie named Khyi Yang Po from Tibet, the dog has a strange mutation in his DNA, which caused the equation that caused dogs to age 7 years for 1 human year to be reversed, causing the dog to live 7 years for 1 human year, allowing the mutant dog to live more than 300 years, if Kozak managed to transmit the dog gene to humans, they could live about 700 years.
Kozak conducts illegal experiments to create an immortality serum for his boss: Dr. Lance Strictland (CEO of Grant & Strictland), his scientists: Gwen and Larry, experiment on animals (such as a chimp, rabbits, a frog and many others) to create the serum. They managed to isolate the dog's gene, but they could not turn it into a virus outside its body to transmit it to other species, so they had to transform the entire genetic code inside the body, when they injected the serum into the animals, all adopted canine behaviors such as barking and chasing their tails, they also developed physical mutations like canine appearance, they discovered that the dog's bodily fluids were very dangerous, but the fluids needed to enter the bloodstream to cause a serious damage. One of the experiments was a snake, he was very old and almost dead due to his advanced age, when they injected him with the serum with the dog's DNA, the cell degradation stopped, he became stronger and happily accepted his new canine nature and began to behave like a dog, he stuck out his tongue, liked dog biscuits and had the dog's tail.
Gwen and Larry believe they had the 300 year old dog under control but the sacred dog is extremely intelligent and has a plan to escape, he lets them take a sample of his blood and when they turn around he takes the infected syringe and points it at them, then Kozak arrives at the laboratory and the dog runs to the elevator and escapes, while the dog escapes, he's found by Carly and her friend Trey, the dog shows Carly that Forrester was right about Grant & Strictland doing animal experiments, Carly and Trey decide to take the dog and bring him to Carly's house.
Carly decides to name the dog "Shaggy", she becomes attached to Shaggy as do Rebecca and Josh and they decide to adopt him, but when Dave discovers Shaggy he tries to get rid of him and drags him to the garage. Shaggy sees a stack of newspapers and comes up with a plan, he breaks free and runs towards the newspapers, Dave says that Shaggy won't keep them while Shaggy takes and brings Dave a newspaper with a news story about Forrester, Dave crouches down to take it and then Shaggy bites it on the hand, perfectly transferring his DNA (which is from bearded dogs just like Shaggy) through his saliva and his DNA manages to perfectly enter the bloodstream with the bite, Dave grabs his hand, begins to scream in pain and unknowingly, his new canine DNA proceeds to enter his body and begins to bite into his human DNA, turning it into dogs, giving him the mutation and the immortality gene and turning him into the first human to receive Shaggy's DNA and transforming him into a sacred dog.
Dave puts himself a bandage on his hand, sends Shaggy to the animal shelter and goes to his studio to work, meanwhile, his transformation from man to dog begins without Dave knowing, the mutation begins to take effect and he happily adopts his new canine nature. Rebecca comes to see him and they start talking but Dave says the words incorrectly, Rebecca complains that Dave doesn't spend time with them and he promises to change that, Dave decides that he will arrive early the next night to prepare dinner and be with the kids, the next night is their anniversary and Dave tells Rebecca that he will make reservations at Grace, Rebecca tells Dave that he has to connect with the family which Dave decides to do (without knowing that instead of doing it as a real man he would do it as a real dog), Dave and Rebecca kiss and Dave's hair starts to get itchy, so he scratches it while his hair starts to turn gray and messy like Shaggy's.
When it's time to sleep, Dave lies in bed like a dog next to his owner's feet, in the morning, Rebecca wakes up and is surprised to see Dave lying next to her feet as if he were her dog (and his hair has also turned completely gray and messy like Shaggy's), Rebecca pets Dave and asks him if he had trouble sleeping, Dave wakes up and says no, stretches like a dog, makes dog sounds and rolls around on the bed like a dog, then Dave gets up and tells Rebecca that he slept great, which surprises Rebecca. Dave mentions that he dreamed that he was chasing cars all night, which also surprises Rebecca and Dave puts on his robe and mentions that he wants to go out and go somewhere, Dave tries to grab the sash of her robe and starts chasing it like a dog chasing its tail, Dave manages to catch the sash and says he wants to go to the park to run.
Dave goes to take a shower, comes out completely soaked and shakes himself like a dog to dry himself, Dave starts to itch all over his body and his ears become extremely sensitive, Josh's music is too loud and Dave asks him to turn it off. At breakfast, Dave begins to smell everything and thanks to his canine sense of smell, he can smell everything much stronger than Rebecca, Rebecca notices that Dave's hair is strange but Dave concentrates on smelling her perfume and begins to listen to Rebecca's music, which he can hear much louder than her thanks to his canine hearing. Dave sits down to breakfast with Josh, he tastes the coffee like a dog drinking water and says it's horrible, he sniffs the cereal and pours it into a bowl, Dave talks to Josh about his performance at school and Dave starts eating by putting his face in the bowl like a dog, he sniffs and licks Rebecca on her face as if he were her dog, Dave says goodbye and leaves, leaving Rebecca and Josh confused by his canine behavior.
When Dave leaves the house, he sniffs something, so he starts sniffing his plants and sees his neighbor's dog urinating in his yard, so he goes after him screaming, Dave gets him to leave and happily sticks out his tongue like a dog, confusing his neighbor and his gardeners. On the way to work, Dave sticks his head out of his car window like a dog and begins interacting with a dog in a car next to him.
At the courthouse, Dave's canine behavior is present during the trial, he growls, hands over a document with his mouth and barks, Dave asks for a break and the judge gives him 10 minutes, Dave goes to the bathroom and a man draws a picture of Dave carrying the document in the mouth, in the bathroom, Dave notices that his hair is strange and wonders what is happening to him (not knowing that his new canine nature is manifesting and his body is adapting to his new canine DNA), Dave takes off the bandage on his hand and starts licking and biting his hand, then he fells like peeing, so he pees in a urinal like a dog in a fire hydrant, Dave realizes that something is happening to him so he leaves and tells Lori (his assistant) that he's sick.
Dave goes to the animal shelter (thinking that his canine behavior is because Shaggy has rabies), an employee tells him that Shaggy didn't have rabies, which confuses Dave for not knowing the cause of his canine behavior (without knowing that it's due to his canine DNA) and he decides to go see Shaggy, Dave goes to the cages and on the way, he sees an old lady's cat and growls at it like a dog.
Dave arrives with the dogs and starts looking for Shaggy, the dogs realize that Dave is also a dog and start barking at him while he feels dizzy, finally Dave finds Shaggy lying on the floor, Shaggy sees Dave and gets up, Dave asks him why he bit him, he asks if he bit him on purpose and Dave thinks he did it on purpose. The dogs start barking louder, so Dave confronts them and he starts barking too, Dave gets a headache and tells the dogs to shut up. Dave turns to see Shaggy and asks him why he bit him, Dave thinks that Shaggy knew who he was and that's why he bit him, Dave wonders what's happening and what's happening to him, which is a miracle that he came to change and fix his life in a way he would never have imagined, transforming him into a dog so he can spend time with his family.
Then the camera enters to Dave's eye and enters to his body, Dave's transformation from man to dog has been completed and his canine DNA has completely and successfully mutated his human DNA, with the dogs barking and circulating perfectly throughout the body, completing the mutation and providing the gene for immortality, at that moment, the new dog inside Dave has enough strength thanks to the stimulation of his canine nature and takes control, perfectly and miraculously transforming Dave into Shaggy, completing his transformation from man to dog, maikng him into the first human to transform into a sacred dog of immortality just like Shaggy and his family's new pet, then the camera get out of Dave's body and get out of his eye, revealing that Dave has perfectly transformed into a dog, the dogs are shocked and confused to see Dave's miraculous transformation into a sacred dog while Dave was able to feel his entire transformation which he felt weird.
Dave doesn't notice that he has miraculously transformed into an immortal sacred dog with youth in his DNA and he also doesn't notice that his suit is lying on the floor and that he's completely naked, he just knows that he wants answers, so he tells Shaggy not to just sit there and to answer him, Dave sits on the floor and talks to Shaggy, dog to dog, Dave asks him why he bit him, Shaggy tells him that he's an animal and Dave asks him if it's a joke about lawyers, but then Dave realizes that he can understand Shaggy and asks him why (without knowing that he can understand him because he's a dog too), Shaggy tells Dave to run and Dave asks him what he should run from.
At that moment, the employee arrives and Dave greets him, the employee thinks that Dave is a dog that got out of his cage (without knowing that Dave was human a few moments ago and that he had transformed into a dog) and tries to catch him, he asks Dave how he got out, to which Dave responds by barking that he let him in there and Dave adds that the employee looks taller than he remembers (without noticing that he's barking and and that humans cannot hear him speak and that they only hear him bark), then the employee tries to catch him and Dave runs on all fours and escapes from under his legs, the employee tries to catch Dave and when he bends down, he tears his pants, showing his underwear.
While Dave runs, he wonders why he is running on all fours, a man opens the door which allows Dave to run away and he thanks him, then Dave realizes that he likes to run on all fours, he says that he's flying and wonders why he always ran on two, while he runs, Dave feels weird the situation and realizes that something is hitting him in the face, but then he realizes that it is his tongue and that he can taste his own eyeball.
The employee leaves the shelter and realizes that Dave ran away, then Gwen and Larry arrive and pose as parents looking for their kid's dog.
Dave runs past a store and sees something in the window, so he tells himself to stop and go back to see, Dave sees the window and discovers that it's a new 42-inch plasma television, then Dave watches himself on the TV and discovers that he's transformed into a dog, Dave asks if the dog is him and thinks it's impossible for the dog to be him, then he barks, which he hears and wonders if he is barking. Dave wonders if someone hit him and put him inside of a dog costume and then he thinks that he is dreaming that he is a dog and that in 5 seconds he will be naked in the courtroom, Dave barks to say that he has to wake himself up, so he runs against the window and he hits against it, which hurts him and makes him realize that he is not asleep. Then Dave realizes that he is not dreaming that he is a dog and that he is not inside of a dog costume and he realizes that he's a dog, Dave barks and yells that he is a dog.
At the shelter, Shaggy is found by Gwen and Larry and they take him back to the lab.
Dave runs home and asks that his family be there to show them that he transformed into a dog, on the way, Dave sees some runners, greets them by barking at them and is surprised to see that they don't understand him (without knowing that humans can only hear him bark). Dave comes home relieved, he starts barking and tries to open the door with his paws but fails, he doesn't understand why he can't open it and tells himself how to do it, but he can't do it, Dave wonders how dogs can do things with their paws and rings the doorbell with his nose. Carly opens the door and is happy to see Dave, Carly thinks that Dave is Shaggy and she gets happy to believe that her dog is back, Dave tells her that he is her father and Carly starts petting him, Dave starts barking and tells her Carly that he needs her help, he realizes that he transmormed into a dog with the bite and tells her that when Shaggy bit him he transformed into Shaggy, but Carly laughs because she thinks Dave is happy, Dave likes her petting him and asks her to continue, but he manages to concentrate and tries to tell her that he transmormed into a dog. Josh arrives, he also thinks that Dave is Shaggy and pets him, Dave barks to ask the kids to listen to him and tells them that he is their father, but Josh thinks Dave is nervous and Carly thinks he wanted to use the bathroom, Dave is surprised that Carly asks him if he needs to use the bathroom, then he realizes that humans can't hear him and can only hear him barking, luckily, Dave comes up with an idea, so he runs into the living room, grabs a Scrabble and uses the letters to write "I AM DAD", but Carly tells him to stop, the kids pick up the game and put it in a high shelf, Dave barks and complains that Carly has never cleaned her room in 16 years and just when her dad turns into a dog, she decides to clean.
Then Carly's friend, Janey, arrives and Carly says goodbye to Josh, Josh asks her where she is going and Carly asks him if he won't tell their parents to which Josh says yes (without her knowing that her father was with them as their dog) and Dave doesn't like the sound of the situation, Carly reveals that she will get a tattoo on her butt in a place that doesn't ask for ID, Dave thinks it's a bad idea and decides to stop that, he runs outside, Janey gets scared and she runs away while Carly and Josh try to stop Dave while he asks Janey how she could do that, mentions that she is a good girl and reminds her that she and Carly went to church camp. Carly asks Dave what's wrong with him and she tells him that he's a bad dog (without knowing that her dog is her father), Dave barks at Carly to tell her not to talk to him like that and punishes her, but Carly starts to get nervous and thinks that maybe they should return Dave to the shelter, so Dave acts like a good doggy and the kids like his game, then Josh thinks Dave needs to run, Dave tells him that he ran 5 miles to get home so he doesn't need to run and then Josh decides to take Dave to play at the dog park, Dave tells him that he has important things to do and that he doesn't want to go to the dog park.
At the park, all the dogs want to sniff Dave's butt and they take turns doing it, Dave wonders if there is anyone in the park who hasn't sniffed his butt, a dog asks him if he wants to sniff his butt to which Dave says that maybe later, Dave explains that he just wants answers and tries to ask the dogs if any of them have heard of a human turning into a dog, but Josh decides to play throwing a Frisbee for Dave to catch, Dave tells him he doesn't want to play, but then Josh throws the Frisbee and Dave is unable to resist his canine nature, which makes him want to play, he chases the Frisbee and catches it with his mouth, Dave is happy to have caught the Frisbee and realizes that he likes to play like a dog. Josh is impressed and his theater partner, Tracy, arrives, Dave returns and finds Josh with Tracy, Dave says that his canine instinct is powerful and thinks that it's crazy, Josh shows Tracy that he has a dog and Dave tells Josh to keep the Frisbee, that he will be back soon and that he must talk to the other dogs, but Josh throws the Frisbee again and Dave's canine nature is once again stronger than him, so Dave wants to play, he chases the Frisbee, makes a big jump and catches it using only his mouth, which leaves Dave impressed by his canine skills. Dave returns and asks Josh if he saw how he caught the Frisbee and that his jump was amazing, but then Dave notices that Josh is sad (because of his conversation with Tracy) and asks him what's wrong.
In the laboratory, Shaggy is locked in a cage with a muzzle, Gwen and Larry call Shaggy "a very bad dog" and ask him if he will be good, which he denies shaking his head, Larry goes for a cane and Gwen goes for a needle, the chimp starts barking at Shaggy and they talk about that Shaggy transformed Dave into a sacred dog like him.
As night falls, Rebecca and Carly have been waiting 1 hour for Dave to arrive, then Dave and Josh arrive home and Dave asks Rebecca if she remembers when they promised to be together in sickness and in health (hoping he could tell her that he had transformed into a dog), Josh asks his mother about dinner and Rebecca tells him that his father promised to make dinner the last time she talked with Dave, Dave feels bad about that, he sees and sniffs Rebecca and realizes that she is upset, so he asks her if she had a dog day like him, Carly asks Rebecca if Dave hasn't sent her an email, Rebecca tells her no and Dave gets the idea of using his computer to tell them that he's a dog, he runs to his studio, takes a pencil with his mouth and starts writing on his computer. Carly and Josh arrive and think that Dave is playing while Dave tries to think of how to say that he suffered a metamorphosis, Dave writes that he can't make dinner because he turned into a dog, but Carly closes the computer, then Dave decides to put on his glasses so they can recognize him, he puts his glasses with his nose and asks them if he looks like someone else, but the kids think it's a trick and Josh suggests that Dave could have escaped from the circus, Dave asks the kids to see through his dog body and discover that their dog is also their father, Rebecca arrives and thinks Dave looks cute with glasses, Dave asks Rebecca if she recognizes him but she doesn't realize that her dog is her husband and his owners decide to order food since they think Dave will take a while to arrive, leaving Dave sad since his family doesn't know that Dave is a dog and they adopted him as their pet.
When it's time to sleep, Rebecca leaves Dave in the garage and tells him that she would let him sleep inside the house, but that Dave would complain about Shaggy sleeping there and Dave is surprised by the irony of the situation since he is Shaggy, Rebecca spreads out a blanket and towel for Dave to sleep on and Dave grabs a ball to bite, Rebecca says goodbye and proceeds to leave, but Dave barks at her to tell her to wait, Dave apologizes for not cooking and tells her that he loved her, Rebecca is confused by Dave's barking but she smiles at him and tells him to rest, she turns off the light and leaves, Dave tells her that he really loves her, he starts biting the ball and falls asleep. Dave wakes up at 3 AM and while he was sleeping, the stimulation of his canine nature had calmed down, transforming him back into a human, Dave doesn't notice that he has become human again and thinks that he is still a dog, so he continues to obey his canine nature and starts biting the ball, but then Dave notices that something has changed and discovers that he has become human again, which makes him happy, Dave notices that he's naked, so he uses the towel to cover his nakedness and goes to his room.
Dave enters his room and tries to be quiet, but the floor creaks and Rebecca wakes up, Rebecca tells Dave that it is 3AM and asks him where he was and why he is naked, Dave behaves like a good dog and a good man and tells Rebecca that he understands that she is upset and that he would be upset too and tells her that there is a simple but hard-to-swallow explanation for all that, then Dave tells his owner and wife that he turned into a dog, but Rebecca thinks there's no way her husband could have become her dog and kicks Dave out of the room.
From there, Dave passes to live his new life having transformed into a sacred dog and is happily adopted by his family, becoming the family pet. Dave keeps the fact that he is a dog a secret and begins to investigate his transformation while His owners don't know he is their pet.
At work, Dave thanks Lori for giving him back his car, after he turned into a dog at the animal shelter, Dave wants to get information about how he turned into a dog, so he asks Lori to research men and dogs and asks her if she ever heard of a man turning into a dog, Lori jokes that everyone does it eventually and she asks him why he wants that information, but Dave keeps it a secret that he's a dog.
Dave meets with Ken and they talk about Dave's behavior being unsettling and that he disappeared for the rest of the day (without Ken knowing that Dave's canine behavior is due to the fact that he transformed into a dog and that he disappeared as a human because he was spending the day as a dog with his family being their pet), Dave apologizes and says that he had food poisoning and that he was delirious, they take an elevator but before closing the door a security guard arrives with his dog, making Dave growl.
In the elevator, Dave's canine nature is present, the dog realizes that Dave is also a dog and begins to sniff his butt, then the dog barks so his owner tells him to sit down and upon hearing the order to sit, Dave obeys it and sits like a dog, Dave stands against the wall and Ken asks him if he is okay, Dave says yes but then his human tongue transforms into his dog tongue and comes out of his mouth, but Dave manages to control himself, his dog tongue transforms back into his human language and he goes to court.
The trial continues and Forrester begins to talk about mutated animals that acted like dogs, Dave begins to suspect that information, so he decides to interrogate Forrester while his canine behavior appears, then Forrester tells Dave that he saw Shaggy and Dave believes that Forrester may be telling the truth, then Dave finishes the questioning, the judge is relieved and she adjourns court.
Dave goes with Rebecca to talk to Josh's teacher because he is doing poorly in school, Dave thinks the problem is that they don't spend much time together, so the teacher starts eating a sandwich and Dave wants to try it but manages to control himself, he continues talking with her when he sees a cat in the window, the cat realizes that Dave is a dog and growls at him, so Dave wants to behave like a dog, he lets his canine instinct take control and goes out to chase him, Rebecca and the teacher is surprised to see Dave suddenly come out (without knowing that he is listening to his canine nature), Rebecca apologizes with the teacher and tells her that Dave is a good father and she believes her as Dave runs past the window.
Dave chases the cat towards the street, avoids the cars and jumps on all fours on the hood of a vehicle from the animal shelter, Dave runs four and goes after the cat, goes through a bush, jumps over a gardener and reaches a garden with sprinklers and gets completely wet, then Dave gets thirsty so he sticks out his dog tongue, drinks water like a dog and continues with the chase, he passes in front of a car, hits an old woman and she flies into a tree, Dave arrives at a restaurant with tables outside, jumps on a table with customers and takes a bread with his mouth, Dave comes to a road where he is almost run over by his neighbor and he gets so scared that he drops the bread, Dave sees a garbage truck approaching and continues running while the truck crashes against his neighbor's car.
Dave and the cat finally reach an alley and Dave is happy to see that the cat can't escape, Dave sticks out his tongue excitedly and tells him that he caught him and to come, the cat gets into a pipe and Dave puts his hand in to grab him, but the cat scratches him and takes the opportunity to escape. Dave recovers quickly and turns to see himself in a puddle of water, then Dave's canine nature becomes strong enough due to the stimulation caused by the adrenaline and transforms him into a dog, Dave puts his dog's paw in the puddle, which makes the water move and he turns back into a dog, when the water calms down, Dave looks at himself in the puddle and he sees that he transformed into a dog and he complains about having turned into a dog again. Then the cat reveals to Dave that he didn't do anything wrong, so Dave asks him why he was running away, but suddenly, the men from the shelter appear and catch them (without knowing that Dave was a human a few moments ago and had just transformed into a dog), Dave complains that it's not his week and the men take him to the shelter.
In the laboratory, Gwen and Larry tell Kozak that they believe the serum is ready, they injected a rabbit with the serum 2 days before and apparently the cell degeneration was stopped without side effects, Kozak shouts that he made it and tells Gwen and Larry to prepare the serum for Dr. Strictland.
Carly, Josh and Trey arrive at the shelter and find Dave, Dave is happy to see the kids and tells them that the mastiff he shares a cage with sold him for 3 biscuits, the kids ask Dave where he was and tell him that they were looking for him (without knowing that their dog is also his father and that he had transformed back into a human while sleeping and had transformed back into a dog after chasing a cat) to which Dave tells them that he was waiting for them to come get him out of there, then Josh mentions that he has a football game and Dave gets excited to go watch Josh play.
In the game, Josh stays on the bench reading while Dave barks, Dave barks at the coach to ask if he can can put Josh in and mentions that they have been waiting all game, finally the coach decides to have Josh play, but he tells him that it isn't necessary, which surprises Dave, the coach tells Josh that everyone plays, Josh tells him that he will ruin it but the coach tells him that they are winning by 30 points and to come in and play, Josh finally decides to play and Dave encourages him by barking, Josh joins the team and Dave tells him that he can sniff that the other team's afraid, then he also sniffs a hot dog and a poodle. The team organizes a play but Josh doesn't hear it and he doesn't know what to do, the coach yells at Josh where to stand and they start playing, the team passes the ball to Josh, but he doesn't know what to do and is tackled. Josh returns to the bench and Dave congratulates him for his effort, then a couple of teammates start making fun of Josh and calling him a loser, so Dave starts barking and growling at them, making the pair of cowards run away like the losers they are, Josh thanks his dog and pets him, Dave tells his owner that he would like to buy him an ice cream, but he is a dog, so he has paws and doesn't have a wallet, because he's naked.
After the game, Josh meets up with Tracy and they start talking, then Josh reveals that he hates football, but he plays it because his father loves it, Josh tells Tracy that he thinks that if he tells his father he wants to be in a musical, he won't support him, so he decided to fail his classes to be able to leave the team (without knowing that his father is with him as his dog), Dave feels bad hearing that, he wonders how he could let that happen and questions himself as a father.
At home, Carly and Trey make a pamphlet to help Forrester, then Dave arrives and asks Trey what he is doing in Carly's room, Carly and Trey try to kiss but Dave barks and stands in the middle, Dave sees the pamphlet and thinks it's great, Carly mentions that Forrester said that just because something seems ridiculous doesn't mean it's wrong, it just takes courage to defend it, Dave is happy to see that Carly is doing this, he tells her that he's proud and licks her face, tickling her, Trey takes him down from the box and Dave tells him to be careful, then Carly tells Trey to think about what would have happened if they hadn't stolen Shaggy from Grant & Strictland (without knowing that her father is with her as her dog), Dave is surprised to hear that and starts barking when he finds out that Carly stole Shaggy from Grant & Strictland and she lied about it, Trey shows Dave a toy bone and tells him to catch it, Dave tells him that he isn't his dog and that he won't do it, but then Trey throws the bone and Dave is unable to resist his canine nature, which makes him want to play, Dave chases the bone, leaves the room and catches it with his mouth, Dave wishes to stop behaving like a dog.
Josh arrives singing and Dave enjoys it, Josh notices that Dave is watching him and stops, Dave tells him to continue since he is very good and Josh asks him why he looks at him, then Josh tells Carly that he will order pizza and that their parents are out for dinner, Dave thinks about what Josh said, then he realizes that he forgot it's their anniversary and runs to see Rebecca.
At night, Rebecca is sitting at Grace, waiting for Dave to arrive, then a woman tells Rebecca that she should have brought a book and that they are the best company for a single woman, Rebecca shows the woman her wedding ring and tells her that she is not single, the woman understands and then Rebecca says quietly that she is not single yet, revealing that she thinks she could stay single. Dave arrives with a bouquet of roses in his mouth, complains that he is too late and adds that he is a dog, so he can't get in, so he stands in front of the window and contemplates the beauty of his wife, then Rebecca turns to look at the window, she sees her husband and is surprised to see that her dog is there, Dave apologizes to his owner and wishes her a happy anniversary, Rebecca picks him up and they go home.
In the car, Rebecca sends Dave a voicemail, believing that he is trying to push her away and that he played a prank by sending Shaggy with roses in his mouth and hangs up. Rebecca starts to cry and Dave tells her not to cry, Rebecca laments the situation and mentions that Dave used to be around or at least leave something behind, Dave gives her the unconditional love of a pet and they hug each other, Rebecca wonders if it would all end with Dave anywhere and she hugging her dog (without knowing that Dave disappeared as a man because he had transformed into a dog to be with her and that he didn't come to their anniversary dinner as her husband because he came as her pet and that he loved her), Dave promises to find out how he turned into a dog and fix it and also be a better man, Dave tells Rebecca that he loves her and growls at her, but she thinks that he needs to use the bathroom and tells him to wait a little.
Rebecca leaves Dave in the garage, dries him and covers him with a towel and Dave thanks her, Rebecca leaves and Dave feels bad about the situation since nothing is working, Dave recognizes that he is the dog that his owners deserve, but he is a terrible man to his family, he decides to fix everything and goes to sleep. Dave transforms into a human while he sleeps and wakes up at 3 AM, he thinks and comes up with a plan to fix everything, while Rebecca sleeps, Dave leaves her a note, promising to explain everything and rose petals (which he took from his neighbor's garden) forming the phrase "I LOVE YOU", to show his owner and wife that he loves her and that he has been her dog and her husband.
Dave goes to talk to Ken and he tells him that he thinks that Kozak might have framed Forrester, but Ken tells him that Forrester will give up and that he will take over the case because the trial members believe that Dave has gone crazy (without knowing that Dave's canine behavior is because he has transformed into a dog and has been busy spending time with his family being their pet), Ken closes the door and Dave is left alone, Dave decides to be brave (like Carly said) and be the man and the dog needed to find out what's going on.
Dave goes to Grant & Strictland and starts sniffing around for clues, then he sniffs something and finds a vent, so he decides to use it to get in (causing Shaggy and the mutant animals to notice the presence of another sacred dog and start to bark), Dave opens the vent and tries to enter but he is too big as a human, fortunately, Dave sees a homeless man and a stick and it occurs to him to play as a dog to transform and be able to enter.
Dave pays the homeless man to throw the so that Dave will chase it and make him behave like a dog to transform, the homeless man accepts and throws the stick, which makes Dave want to play like a dog, so he lets his canine instinct take control and plays, Dave chases the stick on all fours and catches it with his mouth. Dave gets excited and almost manages to transform into a dog, he asks the homeless man to throw the stick again and yell at him to go get it, the homeless man is confused by Dave's canine behavior and he tells him not to force him to bite him, the homeless man throws the stick, yells at him to go get it and Dave chases it, Dave gets excited, chases the stick and then his adrenaline rises quickly, stimulating his canine nature and giving him enough strength to transform it, then the stick falls and Dave catches it transformed into a dog, Dave is happy that he transformed into a dog and is surprised that his plan worked, he thanks the homeless man and leaves being a winning dog while the homeless man is surprised to see Dave transform into a dog.
Dave walks up to the vent and tries to get in, but then he discovers that he forgot to let go of the stick, he realizes and lets it go, Dave tries to get in and he gets in perfectly like a dog, Dave begins to sniff and follows his nose to guide him through the ducts, but suddenly he sniffs something and wonders what it's, but then he realizes that it's himself. Dave finds a vent in the ceiling and lies down to see, then discovers that Grant & Strictland had used Shaggy to create an immortality serum with his DNA and become immortal (being the same as what happened to Dave, when Shaggy bit him, the immortality gene entered his body and made him immortal, but since Dave was bitten by Shaggy, Shaggy's bodily fluids also entered into Dave's body, also giving Dave the power to transform into a dog), then Kozak injects Lance with a needle with what he thinks is the serum, but in reality it is a paralytic, Dave wonders what Kozak did to Lance and then Kozak reveals that he is tired of Lance always taking the credit, Lance is unable to speak for months and Kozak reveals that he plans to take control and become rich and promises him Gwen and Larry their parts of the money. Then Dave gets up and rushes out of there, Kozak and Gwen hear Dave running and wonder what that was, Dave runs out and realizes that he was right about Kozak being up to something and that Carly was right about Forrester's innocence, Dave barks and tries to get into his car to go home, but he can't open the door with his paws and decides to walk home.
Kozak, Gwen and Larry review the security footage and discover that Dave has transformed into a sacred dog like Shaggy, Kozak destroys the tape and sends Gwen and Larry after Dave.
At dawn, Rebecca wakes up to find the note Dave left her and the rose petals, making Rebecca see that her husband loves her and beginning Dave's plan to show his owner and wife that he has been with her as her dog all the time, Dave's neighbor goes out to pick up the newspaper, discovers that Dave destroyed his roses and thinks it was hooligans.
Dave runs home to tell his family what he saw while Carly and Josh wait for Trey to leave for school, Josh takes his backpack when he notices that Carly is sad and asks her what's wrong, then Carly tells him that she thinks that their parents are getting divorced, then Dave comes home, rings the doorbell and Josh answers it, Dave comes in and starts barking at Carly to tell her that he saw an attempted murder and that she was right about Forrester being innocent, then Dave tells the kids that he has to take a nap and not to wake him up until he has turned into a human.
But then, Dave overhears Carly talking to Josh about the note that he left Rebecca and that she thinks they're getting a divorce, Josh asks if she's not exaggerating and Carly tells him that Dave didn't even come home the night before and that they stopped caring a long time ago (without knowing that Dave had received the miracle of transforming into a sacred dog of immortality and that he had disappeared as a man to be with them as a dog and be their pet, which allowed him to reconnect with them), Dave doesn't want the kids to believe that so he runs into the living room, jumps over the couches and grabs the Scrabble, the kids hear the noise, go to see what it is and Dave writes "I AM DAD".
The kids arrive, see that Dave wrote "I AM DAD" and then discover that Shaggy is Dave, which makes Dave happy and he writes "GRANT AND STRICTLAND", Carly remembers that Forrester said that they mutate animals and there she found Shaggy, then they realize that Dave transformed into a dog when Shaggy bit him, Carly thinks it's her fault that Dave transformed into a dog and apologizes to him, but Dave is happy to have become a dog (because it allowed him to open his eyes and realize his mistakes) and tells her there's nothing to forgive, Dave licks Carly, she pets him and goes to call Rebecca to tell her that Dave turned into their dog. Then Josh asks Dave if he saw the game the day before to which Dave says yes and nods his head, Josh tells him that he didn't want to let him down, but that he's a bad player, Dave barks at him to tell him that that is not true and that he's good. Dave goes for Josh's backpack and gives him his books, showing him that he wants him to follow his dreams and does well in school, Josh agrees with him and they shake hands and paws.
Carly leaves a message for Rebecca and tells her to call her and then Dave hears something and thanks to his canine hearing he is able to hear it perfectly while Carly and Josh don't notice anything, Dave asks them if they heard and tells them that someone is peeing in the garden, so he starts barking and runs outside to stop the culprit, Dave sees that it is his neighbor's dog, tells him that he won't get away with this and goes out to stop him, but then he is electrocuted by Gwen and Larry, Dave is stunned by the electric shock and Gwen and Larry put him in the trunk of their car, Carly and Josh try to stop them but Gwen and Larry flee quickly.
In the laboratory, Dave is locked in a cage and Kozak begins to mock him and tells him that they want to know how Dave was able to transform into a dog like Shaggy and then they plan to eliminate him, then Kozak puts his finger in the cage and Dave bites him, perfectly transferring his DNA through his saliva and his canine DNA manages to perfectly enter the bloodstream with the bite, Kozak screams in pain and Dave laughs at him, Kozak tells him to come back later to eliminate him and leaves to win the trial, but as Kozak leaves, Dave's canine DNA begins the transformation and Kozak feels itches all over his body.
The humans leave and the animals are left alone, then Dave talks to Shaggy and asks him who he is, Shaggy reveals that his name is Khyi Yang Po and that he is from Tibet, Dave asks him why he bit him to which Shaggy says that he thought Dave could help him, Dave asks him how he could help him by transforming him into a dog too and Shaggy realizes that he didn't think about that, the mutant animals start barking and talking to Dave, he mentions that he transforms into a human when he sleeps but there is no time for that, but then the animals reveal that he can also transform into a human by meditating.
Trey arrives and Carly and Josh tell him that Dave was dognapped and they rush to save him.
The animals begin to meditate while concentrating on their canine nature and Dave learns that to transform into a dog he needs adrenaline and to transform into a human he needs to calm down, he learns to control himself and concentrates on his canine nature, imagines that he is on the beach, he is surrounded by fire hydrants to pee, food everywhere, waves of gravy and a whale made of peanut butter, then Dave's human eyes and the animals see him transform into a human. Dave is happy that he transformed into a human but he is still locked in the cage, then he sees the keys to the cages and tries to reach them but his cage falls, Dave gets the attention of the snake who responds with a bark and Dave tells him that they will throw away his box so he can go get the keys, first Dave guides the chimpanzee to push, then he guides the rabbits to jump and the snake box falls to the ground and he is free, snake crawls up to the keys, slides them over its body and gives them to Dave, he tells the animals that they can get out of there and they bark with happiness.
Dave puts on a robe to cover his nakedness and helps the animals escape through the ducts, he picks up Shaggy, helps him inside and helps the others, the chimp climbs on Dave's back and enters the ducts, the frog is very heavy and Dave throws it in and the snake slides over Dave's body as he helps him in, Dave tells him that he is heavy for a snake while the snake rubs his dog tail over parts of his body like his crotch and face, which scares Dave, Dave tells them the way and tries to escape, but Gwen and Larry arrive and electrocute him, luckily the snake saw what happened, so he barks and asks the others for help.
Shaggy goes out and is found by Carly, Josh and Trey, they think Shaggy is Dave and take him with Rebecca.
Gwen and Larry lock Dave in a cage and prepare a needle to inject him, Dave sees the snake and the chimpanzee coming to save him and tells Gwen and Larry that they won't get away with that, Gwen and Larry tell Dave to be a good little doggy and do what they say, but then they get electrocuted by the chimp, Dave makes fun of them, congratulating the chimp and asking it to get him out of the cage. Shaggy barks at the kids to tell them that he's not Dave, but Carly thinks he's mad at her and Josh tells her that they're going to Rebecca to explain everything to her. Dave takes Larry's clothes, escapes with the animals and they leave in Dave's car.
Carly, Josh and Trey get to Rebecca, they tell her that Dave transformed into a dog and try to get Shaggy to do something to prove to her that it's true, but neither attempt works, but then Dave calls Rebecca and the kids realize that they found Shaggy instead of Dave, Dave reveals the truth about Shaggy while the animals get into mischief in his car, Dave tells Rebecca to meet him at the courthouse wearing a suit for him and hangs up. Dave asks the animals what's wrong with them and tells them to behave like the snake, who is behaving good and he just sticks his head out the window, barks and sticks out his tongue happily, which makes Dave feel strange, Rebecca tells the kids that Dave wants them to see him in court in a suit, the kids don't see the point in that and then Rebecca remembers when Dave showed up in the middle of the night and tried to tell her that he'd turned into a dog, Shaggy nods at her and then everyone makes sense of the situation and rushes to courthouse.
Dave and the animals are close to reaching the field when they almost crash against a stopped car, scaring everyone, then they realize that they are in a traffic jam on a bridge. The trial begins and Kozak is ready to win, Dave gets out of the car and tells the animals that he has to leave them and promises to return soon. Dave leaves and begins to run between the cars to reach the courthouse, while he runs, Dave shows the world that he has transformed from a workaholic man to a sacred dog close to his owners and that he has learned to control his powers while his heart rate begins to increase rapidly, stimulating his canine nature, Dave obeys his canine nature and starts running on all fours, his canine behavior becomes strong enough and Dave transforms back into a dog, leaving him completely naked and wearing his robe as a cape, showing the superhero dog that he is proud to have transformed, transforming into a dog allows Dave to run faster, he jumps over cars and runs past, then he jumps off the bridge and falls as if he were flying (just like Buzz Lightyear) and says "To infinity... and beyond!", he lands on a bus and heads to the courthouse being a big dog while his cape flies with the wind.
At the courthouse, Rebecca, Carly, Josh, Trey and Shaggy wait for Dave with an outfit for him and wondering if he will arrive, then Dave arrives and meets his owners and his canine companion, the two sacred dogs of immortality bark to talk to each other and Carly asks Dave if it's him, to which he tells her that it's him, Rebecca believes that it is impossible for it to be Dave because he is a dog and then Dave asks her if a dog would say what he was going to say and tells her that he loves her, Rebecca asks what he said and Dave tells her that he told her that he loves her, Rebecca understands what Dave told her and then realizes that her husband had always been with her as her dog. Dave tells Rebecca that he loves her, the stimulation of his canine nature calms down and transforms him into a human, Dave and Rebecca kiss, Dave apologizes and promises to make up for all his mistakes and proceeds to enter the trial (forgetting that he's completely naked, luckily Trey reminds him that he forgot his suit, Dave remembers that he forgot that he is naked and takes his suit).
Dave enters (having dressed) and intervenes in the trial, the judge is tired of Dave's canine behavior (without knowing that Dave was busy going from a workaholic to a loving man with his family and a proud sacred dog close to his owners) but Dave manages to get a chance, Dave asks Ken to give him one more chance and Ken agrees. Dave tries to prove that Kozak is guilty while they act like dogs, the judge asks for Dave to be taken away but he manages to return and makes Kozak behave like a dog, then Kozak grows a dog's tail, showing that Dave's canine DNA has mutated him and that Kozak is guilty of genetic mutation, the judge realizes that Dave is right and orders that Kozak be arrested, sending Kozak to prison and declaring Forrester innocent.
The people finally realize that Dave was right and Ken apologizes to him, upon leaving, Dave sees that the mutant animals crashed his car in front of the courthouse and asks Ken to help them, to which Ken agrees and tells Dave that he will surely be chosen as DA, then Ken tells Dave to accept the press's kudos, but Dave focuses on his family. Dave is congratulated by the press, he thanks them and tells them he will have a prepared statement from my office.
Dave arrives with his family and then he realizes that transforming into a sacred dog and his family's pet was his destiny and what he needed to learn to be a true man for his family, he's proud and grateful to have received the miracle of becoming a dog of immortality and the pet that his owners deserve, happily he assumes his new life as the family pet and as a true family man, Rebecca, Carly and Josh are happy to have Dave as a man again and are also happy to have him as their new dog and happily adopt him as their pet, Dave tells Rebecca to take out her new bikini, kisses her, and declares that the family is going on vacation to Oahu, Hawaii.
On Oahu, Dave and Rebecca kiss on the beach and Dave shows her that they have everything he promised, the family enjoys their vacation together with Shaggy, who will be returned to Tibet and the Douglas family would miss him. Carly points out that they look at something in the ocean and they see that Shaggy is surfing, the people are surprised to see him and Dave says that Shaggy is a 300 year old dog riding the waves and encourages his canine companion, Dave and Rebecca start talking about how they miss Shaggy, fortunately for the Douglas family, Dave has become their new dog and a dog lover, Dave is proud to have become his family's pet and a sacred dog of immortality, spending time with his owners being their dog, happily behaving like a dog and transforming into a dog whenever he wants.
Then Josh decided to play with Dave as owner and dog, Josh throws a Frisbee to his dog and yells at him to catch it, Dave gets excited about playing like a dog and his canine nature is quickly stimulated, so he obeys his canine nature and pass from being the man of the family to the family dog, Dave happily obeys his owner's command and chases the Frisbee while Rebecca sees her son and dog playing, then Dave, who has the Frisbee, makes a big jump and catches it with his mouth, showing the big dog he's (perfect for a postcard) and Dave enjoys the vacation with his family being their pet.
Trivia
- Near the climax, as Dave jumps off a bridge onto a bus he yells "To infinity... and beyond!" This is obviously a reference to Buzz Lightyear, who is also played by Tim Allen.
- Dave appears to be a mixed of Wilby Daniels and his father: Wilson Daniels from the original "Shaggy Dog" films.
