Appearance

Anya is a short young girl with fair skin and green eyes. At the time of their first meeting, Loid describes her as appearing about four to five years old at the oldest. Her green eyes are large and oval-shaped, with prominent eyelashes. She has shoulder-length, light pink hair that curls inwards with a fringe that reaches just above her eyes and a small strand of ahoge at the top of her head. Anya is noticeably shorter than most of her peers, and many of the insults that Damian and his friends direct at her target her small size. However, in Damian's view, she gains a prettier appearance.

Personality

Anya is a bubbly and cheerful young girl. She appears to be much smarter than she actually is, and while this is probably true to an extent, this is likely artificially inflated because she can read other people's minds, a fact that nobody aside from her is aware of.

Being an orphan who's hopped between several families before becoming a Forger, she became quickly attached to Loid and Yor as her father and mother respectively. She's also eager to make friends in general, seeing as she had none while at the orphanage. However, despite her apparent maturity, there are aspects of her that reminds you of her age, such as how quickly she became violent towards Damian Desmond, who was teasing her, likely remembering that her father did the same thing to the guy during her school interview for making her cry.

However, she respects the desires of her parents a lot, and when her mother asked her not to punch people who displease her, and instead smile at them, she did as she was told, although with visible discomfort, noting that she feels her mother lied when she told her that it would make her feel better and defuse the situation.

Unlike most children, who likely would have been scared of Yor's and Loid's occupations, (assassin and spy respectively), when Anya found out about these facts by reading their minds, (they're still unaware that she knows), she thought they were the coolest thing ever and desperately wanted to be their daughter. In fact, she's responsible for Yor becoming her mother, by pretending to be sad and lonely that she didn't have a mother, which caught Yor's eye, and also caused Loid to pursue Yor more directly.

Anya is in awe of the espionage that Loid is undertaking, which she emulates with her toys, and when opportunity arises, tries to be a spy herself, which despite her significantly lower intelligence, she is able to achieve a level of success due to opportune memories and luck. Yor's assassinations, however, momentarily startle and horrify Anya when she first sees the memories, though is able to quickly lose track of the violence; while intimidated by Yor, Anya is still incredibly amazed by the assassin's superhuman abilities and talents. Despite being afraid of Yor's strength, Anya still loves her as a mother, and usually feels safe around her.

While she is able to read minds, she fails to understand motivations or emotions unless the mind specifically mentions them. She unwittingly befriended Becky, but passively accepted the friendship due to not knowing how to object to it; in spite of the initial accidental nature of their friendship, Anya grew to greatly appreciates their bond and often relies on Becky's advice, albeit she herself frequently is unable to properly understand the advice. Similarly, Anya is completely oblivious to Damian's growing affection for her, as his disciplined mind never covers anything "trivial" like love, and she interprets his blushing then outbursts as hostility, rather than him feeling embarrassed.

Anya tries to make herself as useful as possible to Loid's Operation Strix, due to a desire to be a hero that saves everyone, though she does have selfish tendencies that could be expected for a child. When she reads Fiona's mind, learning that she is emphatically infatuated with Loid, she is indifferent, but upon learning that Fiona aims to replace Yor and would enforce a Draconian study schedule and loss of playtime that would disrupt her life too, Anya overacts affection to Yor to manipulate Loid into keeping her as his false wife (albeit, a pointless endeavour, since Loid was never even considering Fiona's suggestion). When Anya realises that her friend Becky is in love with Loid, she is unnerved, but remembering Becky's wealth makes Anya consider having her as her new mother; granted, this was a brief fantasy, yet it shows how her selfishness can often make her disregard others and even reality.

She frequently has either difficulty or apathy in remembering names, thus has a habit of assigning nicknames, but she never tells the person the moniker due to failing to think it is important. As such, she refers to Damian as "Second Son," as reference to his status as the second born of the Desmond family; and there is also Franky, who she calls "Scruffy" in reference to his hair. Likewise, in scenarios where she isn't provided a person's name, the briefly encountered civilians and enemies are given some sort of simple title that is based on a certain characteristic, attire, or attitude, etcetera.

Powers and Abilities

Anya mind reading
  • Telepathy: As a result of an accidental experiment, Anya gains telepathic abilities, allowing her to read the minds of other people. She utilizes her telepathy to gain significant advantage over others, such as reading Bill Watkins' mind during a dodgeball game to predict his next move, learning the answer of an exam, or easily guessing the passcode of a locked key. She does struggle with processing thoughts when they are overflowing with details, or cover concepts she doesn't know or understand. Also, people undergoing significant emotional turmoil, whether it be anxiety, over excitement, or rage, deliver thoughts that become incomprehensible to any understanding.
  • Strong Will and Bravery: When caught in life-threatening situations, she can sometimes become startled or even scared, but she mostly holds a level of courage and relentlessness in overcoming danger, which is well above average for her peerage and even many adults. She occasionally distracts herself from the threat by imagining she is merely playing spy, like in her favourite show Bondman, but it still displays an impressive level of bravery.
  • Small Stature: An attribute that will gradually fade as she grows up, but as a smaller than average child, she can easily fit through ventilation ducts and hide in small enclosures.

Weaknesses

  • Anya eclipse
"Eclipsing": For unexplained reasons, during the period of new moon, Anya's telepathy powers are temporarily disabled. A phenomena dubbed "eclipsing" by the scientists at her former laboratory.
  • Large Crowds: Due to many people's mind nearby. Anya's telepathy causes her exhaustion and nosebleed due to her ability is reading too many people's thoughts at the same time.
  • Poor Academic Skills: Fitting her age, Anya has low understandings and educational skills. Causing her to get very low marks on most tests at school. When trying to read someone with a complicated and genius mind, like Loid. She is unable to understand what he is thinking due to the massive amount of information. This also branches to her poor grammar skills, when leaving message to others only leading them to unable to understand what she is writting. As well as not knowing how to write a warning message on a paper to her father about the bomb trap that Keith Kepler set behind the door, she instead draws a bomb on the paper which still confuses them.
    • Low Attention Span: In regards to education, Anya has significant difficulty in remaining focused on school work; she struggles to retain any information that she deems "uninteresting" thus studying is often a fruitless effort.
  • Poor Physical Stamina: Despite being able to conjure exceptional endurance in adrenaline-driven situations, she struggles in school athletics because of underdeveloped physical strength, which was likely caused by her infancy of being trapped in labs and orphanages. She is note to have stubby legs, which would likely be a further detriment until she grows out of them.

Trivia

  • "Anya" is a Russian, diminutive variation of the name "Anna".
  • Anya's name has been a subject of a continuity inconsistency, as, normally, it is spelled with a "Y", but there are moments where it is spelled with an "I" (most notably, in the sign of her bedroom door). The reason for that is that, originally, her name was romanized as "Ania" by Tatsuya Endo, and was written as such in the early chapters of the manga until it was changed to "Anya" for unknown reasons.
    • In the Extra Mission 11, it was retconned that the reason why her bedroom door is spelled with an "I" is simply due to Anya mispelling her own name, with her correcting it in the end of the chapter, meaning the in-universe reason for this inconsistency is likely due to the fact that Anya does not know how to spell her own name.
  • It's likely Anya might be younger than 6 years old as her age was forged in order for her to get into Eden College and Anya could have lied in order to get adopted by Loid. This would explain why Anya seems to be more immature than her classmates, although that could also be chalked up to her sheltered early childhood. It was later on confirmed by Tatsuya Endo that Anya is actually 5 years old.
  • Befitting the Cold War setting of the series, it's possible that Anya's origin story might be a reference to the MKUltra program: A human experimentation project made by the CIA during the Cold War, which allegedly researched procedures of mind control and brainwashing that could be used to extract information during interrogations.
  • Anya's codename "Test Subject 007" is a direct reference to the codename of the famous fictional spy from Ian Fleming's novels, James Bond.
    • Ironically, another James Bond reference. Anya’s name was a reference to Anya Amasova, the Russian Major agent XXX from the 10th James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me.
    • Her application number at Eden, K-212, is based off the postal code of the city of Kawasaki, where Tatsuya Endo used to work.
  • Anya's overall design was largely based off the titular main character of Tatsuya Endo's previous one-shot work Rengoku no Ashe, with both characters sporting pink hair and the exact same horn-like hair accessories, which in Ashe's case, is supposed to be a miniature version of witch hats.
    • Oddly enough, Endo's original concept art for the Forger family featured an older, grimmer looking version of Anya, who looked exactly the same as Ashe.
