Hero Overview

Looks like I got some things to do!
~ Spyro the Dragon (1998).
Hold your horns! Here comes Spyro!
~ Spyro, from his game debut.

Spyro the Dragon is the titular main protagonist of the video game series of the same name.

He is the loyal hero of the Dragon Realms that he calls home, commonly saving the world from the evils that threaten peace. Throughout his adventures, he is joined by a yellow dragonfly named Sparx, as well as a large cast of characters who help him on his quests.

In the first game, he was voiced by Carlos Alazraqui in the first game, who also voiced Rocko in Rocko's Modern Life. In three of its sequels, the Reignited Trilogy series and his current voice actor, he is voiced by Tom Kenny who has also voiced Dog from CatDog, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Dad-o in Henry Hugglemonster. In Spyro: A Hero's Tail, he is voiced by Jess Harnell.

Personality

Spyro is known as a heroic dragon who is ready for action. He is fearless, spunky, and has a blazing personality. Spyro also has little interest in love, seeing it as "a sad sight" (though in the Reignited Trilogy, it's teased that he might be a little interested in Elora, so he may be open to it in some cases). Spyro's exact characterization varies depending on the game; in the original version of the first game, he had a much more pronounced disrespectful and snarky attitude to a number of the dragons he saved and came off as mostly being interested in beating up Gnasty Gnorc. However, in Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon, he showed more actual care for those he saved, and his initial bratty and arrogant attitude was much more toned down, possibly to showcase him maturing and caring more about doing the right thing. Conversely, however, in A Hero's Tail, his arrogance becomes more pronounced again, and he actually denies helps to those who won't reward him at a couple of different points.

In the Reignited Trilogy, on the other hand, a lot of his interactions, especially in the case of the first game, are tweaked or altered to make him come off as more playful, friendly and kid-like. While he's still impatient, showing reluctance to listen to some of the older dragons' monologues or stories, as well as overly eager to torch Gnasty Gnorc, he comes off as less snarky and disrespectful and all-around nicer, with this characterization consistently carrying over into the next couple of games. It's just that in those cases, the difference from the original games doesn't stand out as much since his personality already softened in the original version of those installments. Overall, Spyro might be a little on the arrogant and overconfident side, but he is pretty much always willing to help those in need and will quickly head off to save the day without any fear or hesitation.

  • Wing Shield: Spyro can use his wings to deflect projectiles back at their opponents. However, it doesn't protect him from direct physical attacks.
