Hong Kong

See all appearances

Hong Kong, also called New Hong Kong, is a location in the Universal Century timeline. It is introduced in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

Overview

Hong Kong is a city on the southern coast of China.

History

Hong Kong is the site of a major commercial spaceport that serves as a strategic transportation hub between Earth and the Moon and space colonies.

Gryps Conflict

In U.C. 0087, Hong Kong, referred to as "New Hong Kong", was the headquarters of Luio & Co., a prominent trading business. Bright Noa's family, including his wife Mirai and his children Hathaway and Cheimin, were also staying in Hong Kong aboard the cruise liner Coral Oriental while on the wait list for black market tickets to emigrate to the space colonies.[1]

The Karaba shuttle Audhumla arrived in Hong Kong on June 29 to purchase fresh supplies and new equipment from Luio & Co. for the Anti Earth Union Group. However, the Titans learned of this and Four Murasame was deployed to the city in the MRX-009 Psycho Gundam to eliminate Karaba. Kamille Bidan engaged Four in the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and managed to force her to retreat, but their battle caused damage to the city.[1]

Over the following days, as the Audhumla took on supplies purchased from Luio & Co., the Titans learned about Amuro Ray's connection to Mirai. Ben Wooder had the Noa family taken hostage to try to force the AEUG to surrender the Audhumla. When Amuro attempted to exchange himself for the Noas' freedom, Wooder only captured him as well. Kamille used the Gundam Mk-II to sneak up on the Titans' position from underwater, but he was spotted early and a battle ensued against several Titans' RMS-106 Hizack units. In the chaos, Amuro and the Noa family escaped via boat. Unable to deploy Four due to her being incapacitated by headaches, the Titans eventually retreated.[2]

Fearing another attack from the Titans, the mayor of Hong Kong ordered the Audhumla to leave the city. Before the shuttle could depart, Ben Wooder decided to personally test the capabilities of the Psycho Gundam by going on a rampage through Hong Kong. After Four discovered that Kamille was the pilot of the Gundam Mk-II, not Amuro as she had assumed, she was heartbroken and took control of the Psycho Gundam from Wooder to begin destroying the city herself. Kamille again repelled the Psycho Gundam using the Gundam Mk-II. The Audhumla finally departed Hong Kong with its cargo on July 8.[3]

Second Neo Zeon War

On March 3, U.C. 0093, as Newborn Neo Zeon propelled the asteroid Fifth Luna on a course to hit Lhasa, Earth Federation Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Adenauer Paraya left Lhasa for Hong Kong aboard an airplane with his mistress Katherine and his daughter Quess Paraya to catch a shuttle flight at Hong Kong Spaceport to the space colony Londenion. Only days earlier on February 27, Newborn Neo Zeon leader Char Aznable had declared war on the Earth Federation, and Adenauer was assigned to participate in peace negotiations at Londenion between the Earth Federation and Newborn Neo Zeon to end hostilities. At the spaceport, Adenaur's party took the last three available seats on the shuttle, which was the last one permitted to launch into space before the Earth Federation grounded further flights due to the imminent descent of Fifth Luna and the onset of warfare. Mirai Noa, Cheimin Noa, and Hathaway Noa, who were trying to reach Londenion to reunite with Bright Noa, were consequently prevented from boarding. Since Katherine decided to remain in Hong Kong, Adenauer arranged for her vacated seat to be given to the Noa party, and Mirai chose to send Hathaway on the shuttle while she and Cheimin sought alternate means to leave Hong Kong. The shuttle launched from Hong Kong and reached space while Fifth Luna completed its descent and destroyed Lhasa. Due to wartime restrictions, Mirai and Cheimin found themselves stranded in Hong Kong.[4]

As the Second Neo Zeon War drew to a close, Newborn Neo Zeon selected Hong Kong as the target of their second planned asteroid drop, which would have used Axis to push Earth's faltering environment over the edge into nuclear winter and thereby force all remaining humans on Earth to evacuate to space. Mirai and Cheimin managed to escape Hong Kong and reached the outskirts of the city via car shortly before Axis was set to impact. Hong Kong was ultimately spared destruction when Axis vanished in the "Axis Shock" on March 12, bringing an end to the war.[4]

Mafty Uprising

On April 19, U.C. 0105, the luxury shuttle Haunzen Flight 356 departed Von Braun bound for Hong Kong, carrying a number of Earth Federation ministers and other top officials who were traveling to Adelaide for the 25th annual meeting of the Earth Federation Cabinet. After the shuttle entered Earth's atmosphere, it was hijacked by a group of terrorists with possible ties to the anti-Federation group Mafty's 1st Army. The hijacking was resolved by the intervention of passengers Kenneth Sleg and Hathaway Noa, and Haunzen Flight 356 was diverted from its scheduled landing at Hong Kong and made an emergency landing at Davao so that the Earth Federation Forces could oversee the investigation of the incident.[5]

U.C. 0203

Afranche Char, recently freed from the custody of the Man-Hunter Agency by Metatron, was brought to Hong Kong aboard the spacecraft Spacious on April 14, U.C. 0203. The next day, the Spacious departed Hong Kong and Earth for Metatron's flagship and mobile headquarters, Mother Metatron, where Afranche was proclaimed Metatron's new leader.[6]
