The Orb Weaver is a hostile creature found primarily in the lower sections of the yard, especially the Flower Bed and Hedge. It's considerably larger than the player and is easily identified by its yellow abdomen. Smaller variants with less health, known as Orb Weaver Jrs, can be found near them in most areas.

Behavior

Orb Weaver Spiders semi-randomly patrol on the ground within a small defined area. They periodically spin webs and Web Sacs that can be broken for Resources. They may sleep by lowering their bodies to the ground and curling their legs close. If a perceived threat is spotted, they break from their patrol routes and chase. Orb Weavers move quickly and are not easily outrun. When engaged, their eyes glow and they hiss. They attack similarly to Wolf Spiders and mostly bite except they do not apply venom. They rear backward before lunging forward to bite at close-range. A variation of the attack may be used during which the spider rapidly sidesteps and bites three times. For threats further away, they may shoot a small web that temporarily stuns and blocks movement. There is a short period before another web can be shot again. Hitting the same threat with multiple webs will stack the stun effect. They also may rear upward & spread their fangs indicating a long delay lunge attack.

Interaction With Player

The Orb Weaver Spider is hostile toward the player. When the player is spotted, it will let out a roar-like hiss and may shoot a web or run at the player to close the distance. A player stunned by its web attack can swing an equipped tool to break the web and escape. The cone webs it spins while patrolling do not immobilize the player and cannot be harvested.

Interaction With Other Creatures

Orb Weaver Spiders are passive toward the Orb Weaver Jrs, Spiderlings, and Wolf Spiders. They're neutral toward other creatures but defend themselves and become hostile when attacked. They will become hostile to smaller creatures stuck in their webs. Orb Weavers are also hostile towards Stinkbugs and will attack them on sight.

Advanced Loot Table

This is a more advanced covering of the loot-table of Orb Weaver. Each item has an independent chance and count, in which the chance is the chance it can drop and the count is the amount of items that have that chance. If a count larger than 1 is in one section, then each item has an independent chance from one another (EX: Instead of getting say 2 of a resource, you can get 1 with a 70% chance and another with an additional 70% chance). In terms of Stealing, it can take one item from every section of the loot table, so even if a item count is say 5, the player will only steal one from that section.

Creature Loot Tables also tend to have large amounts of 1% items, which is intended to make stealing more rare items harder, as the player is more likely to steal the large amounts of 1% items than a singular 50% item.

Note: For consistency sake, all duplicate categories have a multiplier next to them, but function as unique loot types when say using Stealing.

Strategy

Orb Weavers alone can be difficult to kill, and the player should have a tier 1 or 2 weapon and at least tier 1 armor to fight them. Their attacks are mostly fairly easy to block, with the player focusing on blocking their lunge and combo attacks. When they shoot their webs, the player should attempt to move out of the way of the projectile to avoid being caught in it. If they are, they can bust out of it by hitting it with a tool.

Trivia

  • While their aggressive predatory nature is used for gameplay purposes in Grounded, Orb Weavers are generally not active hunters, and their primary means of killing prey are when it's caught in their web (Hence the name), or when they're threatened.
    • Orb Weavers will also not attack Wolf Spiders. However, in reality, these two spiders would naturally be aggressive over a specific food source or over territory, and would never be seen together without some hostility.
  • The black and yellow pattern on the Orb Weaver's abdomen resembles that of Yellow Garden Spider in real life (Argiope aurantia).
