A Miniboss or Sub-boss is usually a weaker, easier boss that usually appears in the middle of a level. They are typically slightly-stronger enemies than what the player has already faced, and they usually need to be before slain before the player can progress further. The purpose of a miniboss could be to slow the player down, to serve as a mid-level DPS check, or to act as a waypoint of progress.
