Divine Revolte 「
Summary
Plot Details
Around the same time as the previous chapter, Stark returns to the campfire with a fish, offering a late-night snack to Genau. Genau declines, mentioning that Methode would disapprove of unhealthy choices. Stark happily takes the fish for himself, requesting Genau not to inform Fern about it. Stark speculates that Genau might know the type of demon that attacked the village. Genau responds that quadruple-wielding demons are rare, identifying the culprit as the Divine Revolte, the same demon that killed his previous partner. Stark remarks on the peculiar naming, and Genau explains it originates from magically forged swords, known as the Divine Cleaving Swords, capable of changing their weights at will. These swords are named after the weapon that, in mythical ages, smashed a mountain. Genau notes that such forged weapons carry a heavy aura of murderous intent, as demons who create them often test their weapons by unnecessary killing.
As they wait around the campfire, the two are alerted by an approaching enemy. The Divine Revolte charges at Stark and Genau, recognizing them as a warrior and a first-class mage, respectively. Revolte reveals that he predicted someone would stay behind to protect the village. The demon general notes Genau's recognition and asks for his name, but Genau ignores the question, instructing Stark not to take the attacks head-on. Revolte repeats his inquiry, and Genau rhetorically questions the need for introductions when exterminating vermin. Realizing communication is futile, Revolte moves to attack the humans. Stark, concerned about protecting Genau, asks how he can avoid a direct hit. Genau advises Stark to focus on evasion and not worry about him. Genau states that demons are not the only ones that can create otherworldly matter with magic as he casts the Niello Wing Manipulation spell Digardnacht that successfully blocks Revolte’s slashes. As the battle ensues, Genau realizes that it is not going to be easy as Revolte’s speed, stamina and attacks are superior to a human’s and realizes that Stark is struggling to keep up , though there is no way to retreat.
Despite Genau's advice, Stark gets hit directly by Revolte, who grins at the successful attack. This creates a brief opening for Genau to sever Revolte's tail and damage his torso. Revolte barely blocks Genau’s killing blow with his blades and finally recognizes Genau as the partner of the mage he killed after the latter was left behind to protect a village. Revolte taunts Genau about not hearing his comrade's final words, but Genau dismisses him. Before Genau can deliver a final blow, Revolte distracts him by claiming he should have checked for survivors more thoroughly. A young child appears, and Revolte throws his sword at her. Genau deflects the blade but is stabbed in the torso by the child. In a surprising turn, the young child reveals herself to be a demon and celebrates, only for Genau to get back up and swiftly cuts her in half with his wing, reflecting on his clouded judgment due to his deceased comrade. He acknowledges there was no way a child could have survived in the village. Revolte reveals that his insight about humans protecting children was correct. Genau remarks that the world would be more peaceful if that were the case but only recognized his dead comrade as someone who would do that.
A flashback reveals Serie's remarks when Genau's comrade was laid to rest. Serie noted the deceased mage may have been too kind, a far too common occurrence regardless of era, and Genau acknowledged his heroic death. Serie, however, considered these words empty and labeled Genau as an unpleasant man lacking kindness. As Serie left and the flashback ended, she ordered Genau never to change.
Smiling to himself, Genau admits that his recent actions were out of character. Revolte, claiming he doesn't find joy in killing, prepares to finish Genau but is blocked by Stark. Revolte expresses surprise that a warrior exists who can successfully block his blades. Genau scolds Stark for not pretending to be dead, and Stark insists the last man standing wins in battle. Genau agrees, despite labeling Stark as an idiot, and resolves to join Stark's deathbed, expressing the reward of survival in dire situations. Stark expresses excitement at the prospect.
