The Fortress City of Weise 「
Overview
The Fortress City of Weise is the largest human settlement in the entire Northern Plateau[1] and is positioned on the frontier of the region.[2] It is located north of Lake Korridor[3] and the Great Tor Canyon,[4] close to the borders of the Empire.[5]
The Fortress City of Weise is a metropolis enclosed by two layers of towering walls, featuring amenities such as a large church, a restaurant, and a vast market. A magical shop offers an array of grimoires and magical items, such as Shadow Dragon Horns. Lord Glück’s personal estate is located in the city's center.
Ruled by a feudal lord, the city’s governance is upheld by a local nobility with roots in the Imperial Capital, having originally served as a place where Eiseberg’s disgraced nobles were sent.[6] Weise maintains close ties with the Empire, which occasionally dispatches envoys to the city.[7][8] Additionally, the Emperor holds judicial authority over Glück, with the power to impose punishment if necessary.[9]
Weise plays a crucial role as a regional hub for trade and defense. The restoration of the city significantly enhanced the security of the Northern Plateau, leading to improved conditions for merchants, adventurers, and migrants.[10]
Synopsis
History
The Fortress City of Weise was traditionally ruled by a feudal lord, though this title held little real power. The true authority rested with the local nobility, composed of exiled nobles from the Imperial Capital, Eiseberg. These nobles continued to engage in their old power struggles, leading to corruption, poverty, and hunger throughout the city. The ruling family, which controlled the city’s administration, prioritized personal gain, further worsening the conditions for the citizens of Weise.[11]
Eventually, Lord Glück ascended to the position of Lord of Weise. Following the assassination of his son, who had sought reforms from the nobility, Glück also became entangled in Weise's power struggles. Through political maneuvering and targeted assassinations, he eliminated several of his opponents, in the hope of fulfilling his son's will. During a journey back to Weise, Glück encountered Macht of the Golden Land, one of the Seven Sages of Destruction. After Macht eliminated Glück’s entire convoy, the two struck a deal: Macht would assist Glück in removing the ruling noble family, in exchange for Glück's help in gaining understanding of malice and guilt.[12]
With Macht's support, Glück successfully eradicated the corruption in Weise, ushering in a period of prosperity.[13] The city flourished, and the citizens celebrated their improved circumstances. Shortly after, further festivities erupted in honor of the defeat of the Demon King by Himmel the Hero. For several years following the Demon King’s fall, Macht remained a protector of Weise, saving many lives. The period was marked by lavish parties and grand balls.[14]
Several years into his service to Lord Glück, Macht was ordered to eliminate the oncoming remnants of the Demon King’s army, which advanced toward the Fortress City of Weise under the command of Demon General Schräg the Thunderbolt. Macht effortlessly wiped out the army before returning to the city, where he was hailed as a hero by its inhabitants.[15]
Many years later, following the destruction of a fortress city by a single demon, the nobles of Weise exploited the situation to sway public opinion in their favor. Seeking to force Macht’s obedience, they intended to harness his power for immense wealth. A political struggle followed,[2][16] during which the nobility amassed enough public support to force Glück into accepting their demands. As a result, Macht was compelled to wear the Bracelet of Servitude—a creation of Ewig the Sage—binding him to serve the people of Weise and preventing him from committing malicious acts against them.[17][18]
Several years later, Glück's daughter Lektüre, passed away due to illness.[19] Her death marked a turning point for her husband Denken, who grew increasingly distant from Weise and ceased visiting the city altogether.[20] Some time later, the Empire dispatched Magic Special Forces member Fräse as an envoy for inspection.[21]
Approximately thirty years after Macht began serving Lord Glück, he used his spell, Diagoldze, to transmute the entire Fortress City of Weise into gold, believing this act might finally help him understand malice and guilt.[22] The next day, as Macht prepared to leave the transformed city, he was intercepted by the Great Mage Serie, leading to a battle. However, before their fight could reach its conclusion, Serie’s apprentices intervened, hoping to imprison Macht and find a way to restore Weise. Shortly thereafter, Lernen and his fellow First-Class Mages erected the Great Barrier of the Golden Land,[23] sealing Macht within for the next few decades.[24]
Throughout Macht's imprisonment, various skilled adventurers overcame the perception-hindering magic cast upon the Great Barrier, which rendered it invisible to ordinary people. Lured by the city of gold and its riches, many ventured into the Golden Land, though almost no one ever returned.[25]
