Continued Northern Travels Arc

Twenty-nine years after the death of Himmel the Hero, Frieren and her party arrive at the Fortified City of Heiß and stay at an inn. Frieren frequently buys magical items and enjoys the hot springs, which leads the group to stay in the city longer than planned. One day, while Frieren relaxes in a hot spring, Stark and Fern discuss their extended stay, with Fern mentioning how she has already reprimanded Frieren for prolonging their time in the city.

With both of them having the next day off, Stark mentions that he plans to visit the armorer to sharpen his axe, but Fern insists that he keep her company instead, calling him inconsiderate. Tired of her harsh treatment, Stark decides to take a different approach and asks her on a date. To his surprise, Fern accepts and then leaves the room. As a result, Stark seeks dating advice from Frieren, who takes him around the city to suggest places that Fern might enjoy. Later, Fern also approaches Frieren for advice on the date.

The next day, Fern asks Frieren which dress suits her better, but Frieren responds that they both look the same. In frustration, Fern braids Frieren’s hair, causing Frieren to apologize and ask her not to be angry. Shortly after, Fern leaves for her date with Stark, while Frieren goes to relax at the hot springs. Stark takes Fern to the places Frieren suggested, as well as visiting a local market. However, during their time together, Stark notices that Fern has not smiled all day.

While in a large open space, Stark asks if Fern has genuinely been enjoying the date, to which Fern admits that while the places they visited were ones she usually likes, they did not seem like places he would have chosen himself. Stark confesses that he asked Frieren for advice because he wanted her to enjoy their first date. While Fern admits that she is a little disappointed, she really appreciates the effort Stark put into planning the day.

Two days after Stark asked Fern on a date, the party continues their journey to Aureole. Noticing that Frieren's hair is once again braided, Stark asks her about it. Frieren explains that these braids are when Fern is in a good mood. Stark responds that he cannot notice any difference at all.

Trivia

  • "Heiß" is German for "hot / heated / fervent".
  • In the original Japanese, Heiß is referred to as "城塞都市" (Jōsai toshi), similar to other Fortress Cities like Waal and Weise. However, Viz Media localized it as a "Fortified City" instead of "Fortress City".
