Synopsis
History
Over a millennium before the death of Himmel the hero, Milliarde in boredom decides to carve an inscription in a stele in the Bier Region that describes Boshaft as the finest spirit in the world. She also places a stash full of Boshaft near the inscription and puts up a powerful barrier over it.
Continued Northern Travels Arc
Twenty-nine years after the hero Himmel's passing, Frieren's Party is in the Bier Region in the Northern Plateau in a town with a lot of bars. Frieren explains that this area contains the only granary in the Northern Plateau so brewing has been a particularly prosperous activity for a long time. The party is then seen eating a meal at a bar as Stark overhears two other tavern guests discussing a certain Fass who is close to finding Boshaft while another casts doubt over the claim as he has heard about the endeavor since he was a child. Stark asks what the Boshaft is and Fern explains that she learned from Heiter that it is said to be the finest spirit in the world that was given out by a great emperor of the continent a long time ago. Fern adds that Heiter blamed Frieren for not having the chance to drink the spirit as Frieren explains that there were circumstances.[1]
After the meal outside of the tavern, a dwarf recognizes Frieren and they have a small talk. At last, the dwarf Fass says that he has finally found where Boshaft is and requests Frieren’s help since she can use magic. Frieren asks what the Boshaft has to do with magic and Fass urges her to follow him and he leads the party into the mine, claiming that he had dug it all himself. He adds that although people typically associate dwarves with mining, since he grew up in a town, he had to teach himself to mine for the sake of finding the finest spirit in the world. Stark asks Frieren for an explanation, and Frieren clarifies that Fass has an unmatched love for alcoholic beverages, going to the extent of searching for the Boshaft for over two centuries. Frieren explains that the Hero Party had to refuse his request, as a crying Heiter is shown being dragged away by Himmel. Fern asks Fass why he had to dig a mine for this, and he explains that a legend states the Boshaft was buried in the vicinity, mentioning that he chose to believe in the legend after finding a stone monument two centuries ago.[2]

Fern recognizes the writings on the stone monument as Ancient Elvish and states that it praises Boshaft as the finest spirit in the world, written by Milliarde. Frieren stares at the stone monument and reflects that it really was Milliarde’s doing. Fass explains that his dedication began with the stone monument and now he was just a stone’s throw away from Boshaft. Frieren asks if he has finally found the ruins, and Fass affirms, leading them to a door with a powerful barrier spell. Fass expresses hope that Frieren will be able to break through the spell.[3]
Frieren analyzes the spell and states it would take too long. Fass declares that she would be compensated, and Frieren asks if it would be grimoires, to which he responds that he will give 20 Reich gold coins for the task. Fern and Stark, since it would cover their traveling expenses for a long while, even after hearing from Frieren that three months to dispel the barrier is her estimate, accepts Fass’s request. A few months pass and the day before the barrier is dispelled, Fern remarks that Frieren doesn't seem too happy, which Frieren affirms. Frieren say Boshaft doesn't taste good and is not worth dedicating a life towards. Fern mentions the inscription on the monument, prompting Frieren to explain that among elves, there are some who would do unimaginable things to relieve boredom and kill time.[4]
A flashback begins with a young Frieren approaching an elf who appeared listless, identified as Milliarde and they talk for a bit. Taking a sip from a bottle, Milliarde comments on the awful taste of the drink. Frieren identified the drink as Boshaft, the drink used during a coronation ceremony despite being the worst kind of cheap hooch. Milliarde added that before she arrived at the village, she carved an inscription exclaiming the greatness of Boshaft as Frieren asked what the point was. Milliarde declared that there was no point whatsoever.[5]

The flashback ends as Frieren finishes dispelling the barrier cast on the door. The door opens, revealing a room full of bottles of Boshaft. Fass observes that the bottles are preserved in good condition and exclaims disbelief that the day has finally come. Fass hands Frieren, Fern, and Stark a bottle each and asks for a toast. Fass then takes a sip of the bottle before expressing surprise.[6]
Another flashback begins of the Hero Party leaving the town. Himmel asked Frieren why she refused to look for Boshaft, and Frieren responded by asking Heiter if he liked alcohol. Heiter instantly agreed to Himmel’s disbelief. Frieren asked Heiter what he would do if a drink he spent his entire life looking for ended up being disgusting. Heiter took his time to respond before declaring that he would laugh it off and enjoy it with everyone.[7]
As the flashback ends, Fass struggles to describe Boshaft before Frieren swiftly declares that it is awful, to the point of being worse than any alcohol she has ever tasted. Frieren notices that Stark has not taken a sip in response to her and Fass’s reactions and forces him to take a sip. Stark cries out at the awful taste of the drink before sharing a laugh with the rest of the party. Fass reflects once more on the taste of the drink before laughing, claiming that there is enough of them to share with the entire village. Later, Fass and the party are seen enjoying the drink once more with the rest of the village. Fass claims that it has been a disappointing outcome, yet it was the most fun evening he’s ever had. As the party heads off from the town, he asserts that if one was going to have a drink, they might as well enjoy it to the fullest.[8]
