Detailed walkthrough

Repairing ED-E

The quest is started by traveling to the town of Primm and entering the Nash residence, found on the street corner opposite both the Vikki and Vance Casino and the Bison Steve Hotel; it will be on the right if crossing the bridge into Primm from the NCR tents to the west. The Nash residence can be recognized by the neon "MOJAVE EXPRESS" signage on its roof and the body of Daniel Wyand outside its front door. Inside the building, one will find an inactive eyebot covered in old license plates lying on the left end of the counter.

Learning more about it involves talking to Johnson Nash, the owner of the store and manager of the courier outpost and mentioning the robot sitting on the counter, of which he states that he does not know much about it besides a passing courier picking it up outside Primm and bringing it to him some time ago. Nash will offhandedly suggest taking it to the Gibson scrap yard outside of Novac and be rid of it.

  • If entering Primm for the first time, Nash will be inside the Vikki and Vance Casino, as the town is overrun with escaped convicts. After completing My Kind of Town, Nash will relocate inside his store and take up sitting at the counter.

Examining the broken robot at any time results in a message stating that it can be fixed with the appropriate skills, or lacking that, pieces of junk material that can be used for repairs. Successfully repairing the eyebot can be accomplished via one of two methods:

It is possible to complete the repairs on the robot both before and after talking to Nash. His dialogue will change slightly depending on when, but nothing else will be affected.

Uncovering the past

After ED-E is repaired, continuing the quest requires recruiting it as a companion and keeping it as one.

Playback event triggers

To progress the quest, one has to witness event triggers with ED-E nearby that will activate a total of two pre-recorded messages regarding the scientific data stored inside it. After unlocking the first message, 5 in-game days must elapse before the second message can be triggered.

The triggers for these messages are specific words or phrases found in the dialogue of different characters, typically occurring when speaking to characters who were once related to (or have dialogue options talking about) the Enclave, or characters who speak about advanced technology.

  • Many individuals on the following lists can be spoken to in order to trigger either audio log 1 or 2. However, once they have triggered the first message, the same person cannot trigger the second. The message will also not be triggered if a quest has been completed for that person.

Audio log 1

To trigger the first message, one must bring ED-E to one of the following events:

When the message is triggered, ED-E will initiate dialogue and begin playing an audio file:

Subject E: Diagnosis complete. Begin Recording. My name is Whitley...— ED-E, Audio log 1

After this message (Audio log 1) has been triggered, the quest will be added to the quest log, but Audio log 2 (below) may not be immediately triggered. ED-E will not react to any further keywords until at least five in-game days have passed.

Audio log 2

Once 120 hours have passed in-game, one must bring ED-E to any of the following events:

  • Listen to the unnamed Brotherhood Scribe teaching his class in the classroom within the Hidden Valley bunker.
  • Speak to Michael Angelo about his inspiration, fulfilling both a trigger and also starting the quest Classic Inspiration. (If one has completed Michael Angelo's quest, this dialogue option will no longer be available.)
  • Speak with Veronica Santangelo after meeting with the elder during I Could Make You Care, and again after accessing Father Elijah's terminal.
  • Interact with the members of the Brotherhood of Steel in Hidden Valley (the knight repairing a turret has worked on at least one occasion).
  • When trying to gain the Brotherhood of Steel's trust (without the help of Veronica), a keyword is spoken after getting rid of getting rid of Dobson.
  • If becoming Accepted by the Brotherhood, a scribe will appear just after entering the bunker and point out a footlocker containing energy weapon ammunition. Talking to the scribe again will trigger a keyword.
  • Talk to Apprentice Watkins both about her parents and her decision, and ask her about all the computers.
  • Talk to Doctor Hildern and Dr. Williams when starting the quest There Stands the Grass, and go back to Hildern after Williams told the Courier about the danger in Vault 22 to trigger a keyword.
  • Talk to Fantastic at Hoover Dam and he will mention the HELIOS One trigger word if That Lucky Old Sun was completed by sending power to Camp McCarran and the Strip.

It is possible to use the list of triggers for audio log 1 to also trigger audio log 2, so long as they weren't used to trigger the first one.

As with the first triggered message, ED-E will stop and initiate dialogue and begin playing another audio file:

Download complete. Begin recording. Navarro outpost scientists...— ED-E, Audio log 2
Other possible triggers
  • Talk to Senior Knight Lorenzo in Hidden Valley.
  • Talk to Quartermaster Mayes at Camp Forlorn Hope about retrieving NCR dogtags.
  • Talk to one of the guards in the room with Elder McNamara in Hidden Valley.
Additional log notes
  • Other possible keywords have been reported as being the Enclave, Navarro, Poseidon, HELIOS, Air Force Base, Eden and ARCHIMEDES.
  • A way to incorporate another companion to help in this quest is to have Arcade Gannon present, as his personal quest being undertaken will result in many of the key words being spoken.
    • If the companion quest For Auld Lang Syne has been completed, Doc Henry will no longer be present in the Jacobstown lodge. Instead, Calamity will then trigger the audio log.
  • Using the "wait" feature will also speed up ED-E's speech events. Use the wait feature in increments of 1 hour inside Old Lady Gibson's house and after that, anywhere else.
  • It is possible to get both logs 1 and 2 from Doctor Henry in Jacobstown.
  • It is possible to get both logs 1 and 2 from talking to members of the Brotherhood of Steel.
  • It is possible to be contacted by Brotherhood and the Followers without obtaining both logs.
  • It is possible to get both logs from talking to Michael Angelo on the Strip.
  • It is possible to get both logs from talking to NCR troopers outside HELIOS One.

Upgrading the old

After one has triggered the playback of both audio logs with ED-E, following the elapse of 48 in-game hours, the eyebot will stop and initiate dialogue again. This time, it's because Senior Knight Lorenzo of the Brotherhood of Steel managed to remotely broadcast a radio transmission through ED-E.

"Uh... Hello. Hi. Are you there? ..." (the message continues, and ends with a Spanish voice-over as a placeholder for Lorenzo)

He goes on to say that he wants to examine ED-E for any data the Brotherhood can use and will ask for it to be brought to a surface patrol near the REPCONN headquarters. If one has already entered the Hidden Valley bunker for any reason, then he will simply ask them to return to him there. If one has already visited Hidden Valley, Lorenzo's transmission is cut off by April Martimer of the Followers of the Apocalypse, sending her own transmission to request that ED-E instead be brought to the at the Old Mormon Fort in Freeside. If one has never visited Hidden Valley, Lorenzo will be the only one to spoke at first, then upon traveling there for the first time and reaching the front grate, April should contact them as well and the quest will update to offer both upgrade choices.

ED-E and the Brotherhood

ED-EArmor

If completing this quest is the first time one has entered the Hidden Valley bunker, they will be required to progress Still in the Dark as far as dealing with the Ranger, Dobson for the Brotherhood. Once given free clearance to the bunker, it is then possible to talk to Senior Knight Lorenzo, who will be located on the second lower floor of the bunker.

Alternatively, if the bunker has already been accessed, such as if Veronica is a companion, there will just be a prompt to meet Lorenzo in the bunker.

After agreeing to hand over ED-E to the Brotherhood, Lorenzo and the eyebot will vanish from the game world for up to 3-4 in-game days; one will receive a message saying that ED-E has returned to Primm once it is finished, where he is found in the Nash residence once again. Courtesy of the Brotherhood, ED-E's Duraframe armor plating is enhanced further as compensation for the Poseidon Energy research gleaned from his databanks. Stat-wise, the new armor grants ED-E a Damage Threshold of 20 from his original 8 (an increase of +12 DT), as well as a refurbished metallic chassis, clean of its stickers and license plate (shown right).

ED-E and the Followers

ED-EWeap

Bringing ED-E to the Followers will require reaching either of the gates into the northern half of Freeside, where the Old Mormon Fort stands in the northeastern corner. Inside the fort's walls, April can be found loitering around the circle of tents that the other Followers typically walk around during the day. When spoken to, she offers to cobble together upgrades for ED-E's weapon systems as compensation for giving her group the data they could use to promote the greater good of the wasteland.

ED-E and April will then vanish from the game world for up to 3-4 in-game days, and a message saying ED-E has returned to Primm will appear once it is finished, and he can be found in the Nash residence. Courtesy of the Followers, ED-E receives an extra laser zapper similar in appearance to the alien blaster (+5 DAM, +5 shots/sec, +169 DPS, -0.01 Min Spread, +0.5% Critical Chance and +5 Critical Damage), though can still use its original laser; it will have a stronger tendency to use the new blaster at short-medium range. Unlike the Brotherhood upgrade, the eyebot's chassis will retain the rusted appearance but still be cleared of the stickers and license plate (shown right).

Additional notes

  • Neither option requires nor affects reputation with the Brotherhood of Steel or the Followers of the Apocalypse, so the choice is purely between which upgrade is more appealing.
  • It is possible for only April to make contact if the Old Mormon Fort has been visited beforehand and neither Hidden Valley is visited nor the holotape acquired from REPCONN Headquarters.
  • If prompted to talk to Lorenzo for the final segment of Still in the Dark while he is upgrading ED-E, he will not be present until ED-E's upgrades are finished. In the meantime, the quest arrow will point to the spot Lorenzo is usually found in.
  • If Lorenzo has already been killed as a result of The House Always Wins V, Render Unto Caesar, or For the Republic, Part 2, waiting two days and talking to ED-E will trigger April Martimer to make contact without having to travel to the REPCONN Headquarters. Note that April Martimer will not make contact until Hidden Valley has been discovered.
  • If the holotape was obtained previously by exploring REPCONN Headquarters, April won't make contact until the gate in the fence that surrounds Hidden Valley is opened or, if entering through the gap in the fence, until the Brotherhood compound is entered.

Once an upgrade has been chosen for ED-E and the upgrading process time has elapsed, the player character must return to the Nash residence in Primm and recruit the eyebot once again to complete the quest.

Quest stages

StageStatusDescription
1 (Optional) Bring ED-E to the Gibson Scrapyard in Novac.
5 ED-E appears to have some Enclave log data stored that is triggered by some keywords.
7 The Followers of the Apocalypse would like to see ED-E to get access to the logs he has stored.
10 Find the patrol Knight Lorenzo told you about to let the Brotherhood of Steel examine ED-E.
12 The patrol Lorenzo mentioned is dead, perhaps there is something on one of the corpses that may be useful.
13 There was a password on one of the Brotherhood corpses. Perhaps that could be used to bring ED-E to Lorenzo.
15 Speak to Knight Lorenzo in Hidden Valley about ED-E.
20 Lorenzo would like to examine the data on ED-E. He offered to upgrade ED-E's armor while he was working on it.
25 Lorenzo is examining ED-E and updating its armor. It should be ready in a few days.
30 April Martimer with the Followers would like access to ED-E's data. She promises to upgrade its weapons while she works on it.
35 April has ED-E and will be working with it for a few days to access the data and upgrade its weapons.
60Quest finishedED-E's upgrades are complete.

Notes

  • Talking to Ignacio Rivas about ARCHIMEDES can activate both logs in the same playthrough (although not simultaneously). This can be done even after completing That Lucky Old Sun. If the second log doesn't activate after waiting nine days, try waiting another 24 hours.
  • The numbers of in-game days listed above in the detailed walkthrough do not always work as is implied they should if one chooses to wait to pass the time. However, not receiving a message after waiting does not mean the quest has glitched or failed.
  • Any items in ED-E's inventory will disappear when it is upgraded (unless any add-on content has been installed or playing the Ultimate Edition).

Behind the scenes

Bugs

  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, if ED-E's laser is upgraded in one save, ED-E may spawn with its upgraded laser in a new save. This enables ED-E to upgrade its armor while having a laser upgrade. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 If the Courier talks to Old Lady Gibson and goes through all the dialogue before recruiting ED-E, the quest marker will point to her but she will no longer trigger the log. Go speak with Ignacio Rivas or any NCR trooper inside HELIOS One instead. This can be resolved on the PC version by using the resetquest 001572e8 setstage 001572e8 10 commands in the console to reset. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Sometimes, when ED-E is given to the Followers, its laser appears to stop working, and trying to change its weapons on the companion wheel shows no name. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 After completing the quest, ED-E may suddenly stop being a follower and be unable to attack, but will still be responsive to dialogue and can still be used as a storage container. It may begin following again after fast travel or going through a door. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 If the upgrade from Followers of the Apocalypse is chosen, ED-E may randomly disappear. Even though ED-E cannot be seen, it is still there to interact and fight, this can be fixed by reloading the save. [verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 After getting ED-E back from the Brotherhood at Primm and restarting its companion protocol, it is possible to kill it and keep its Enhanced Sensors perk permanently. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, ED-E's inventory doesn't reset when it is returned. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes ED-E will not respond to a second quest trigger, though its weapon system will be upgraded. This results with an ED-E covered with bumper stickers firing blue projectiles and the quest being unable to be completed. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 After getting ED-E back from the Followers, there may be no notification if ED-E has died. An upside to this is that the Enhanced Sensors perk will be retained. It will also still count as an active follower, preventing entrance to Caesar's tent. [verified]
  • PCPC After getting ED-E back and talking to it in Primm, if there is a conflict with Rex, ED-E might disappear. It can't be found in the house in Primm, or in The Lucky 38. This can be solved by using the following command:player.moveto <ref_id>. The Courier will appear in the Lucky 38, next to ED-E. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, ED-E will not be at the Mojave Express building, and instead a random place in the wasteland, follow the quest marker to find it, however it won't actively follow. To fix this and complete the quest, end its companion protocol and it will reset. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, after upgrading ED-E's weapon, he will appear to not have the upgraded weapon, this can be fixed by switching its weapon back and forth. [verified]
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, after receiving the call by the brotherhood of steel for studying ED-E, the voice during the conversation will change and afterward it will be impossible to move as if still in conversation. Further play will be impossible because ED-E will keep chasing the Courier to trigger the conversation, stopping movement again. [verified]
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 If the player experiences death immediately after the call from the Brotherhood occurs and the game is allowed to automatically restart from the last save or autosave, the call may not occur again, and neither will the follow-up call from the Followers. This can be fixed by manually loading the last save from before the call/death. [verified]
  • PCPC If the player saves the game files in the Steam Cloud, (this is performed automatically) and proceeds to load the same files onto another computer, (this includes DLC) it is possible that the quest will renew upon a keyword. This occurs even if ED-E has already been upgraded. [verified]
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes the player will only get contacted by Senior Knight Lorenzo. If that happens, travelling to the Hidden Valley results in the player getting the message from April Martimer. [verified]
