Soren, the head of the elite Crownguard of Katolis,[4] is a swordsman of immense talent and the youngest member of the Crownguard in history. He is the son of Viren and Lissa, and the older brother of Claudia.[11][12]
Soren initially joined his sister in capturing the Dragon Prince Azymondias to please their father. However, he eventually gained a change of heart and joined Team Zym in restoring peace between the humans and the inhabitants of Xadia. Two years later, he regrouped with his friends to embark on a new quest of preventing the liberation of Aaravos, followed by successfully uniting to fully rid the world of the Startouch Elf Archmage for seven years and nineteen days.[13]
Appearance

Soren is a generally fit, good-looking man with fair skin, a prominent jawline, and dark blue eyes. His eyebrows are thick in nature and triangle-shaped, with his left eye being marked by a scar that he acquired after unsuccessfully trying to mimic the scar of Corvus.[14] He has thick, dirty blond hair that was swept messily to the left side of his head in his young adolescent years, and partly shaven behind his ears. He used to wear a silver armor of the Crownguard adorned with gold and black accents, as well as a cape with the insignia of Katolis. Underneath, he wore a gray, long-sleeved undershirt and black trousers. During his time in Xadia, he temporarily sported a stubble after not shaving for a little while.[15]
Two years after the battle at the Storm Spire, Soren has chosen to keep the lower part of his hair behind his ears shaven, and keeps his general hair length slightly above ear height. His voluminous hair is split into two segments, with the right side growing significantly longer in a slight wave, past his ear. Maintaining the facial hair he had grown in a neat stubble, it is now styles as a short boxed beard. His armor has been switched out for a chest plate sporting the black and white colors of the Katolian Crownguard, as well as its crest on the center, and is decorated with Katolis's signature golden seams. This piece of armor leaves his stomach exposed while guarding his shoulders with several heavy plates. His arms and the tip of his black shoes enjoy additional protection from silver plated armor. Underneath this protective wear he is dressed in a red shirt with a black collar, as well as gray pants. A sword sits on the left side of his hip, attached to a black belt with golden buckles. He also wears pink pajamas underneath his armor.[5]
Personality
Soren comes off as cocky and brash but also as charming, charismatic, and kind. Although he likes to make fun of Callum for being so bad at sword-fighting, he always means well in the end. This is evident when he allowed Callum to beat him in a sword fight training exercise to impress Claudia. He enjoys making jokes, puns, and teasing others in a light-hearted manner, much to their chagrin. Although he likes having Callum as a combat trainee, what Soren wants the most is to make his father proud and was willing to do his command of killing the princes, make it look like an accident and not telling anyone including Claudia. His clumsiness and dim-witted decisions made things harder for him and Claudia, from betraying the princes and Rayla in the wrong time to provoking Pyrrah the Fire Dragon and getting himself paralyzed. Once he got paralyzed, he gained some humility to free himself from the task of killing the princes and confesses his sister about his secret mission, which she at first refuses to believe, and was willing to settle to be a poet, but he got back to his true personality after Claudia healed him.
Regardless of his immaturity and cocky attitude, Soren has a very strong moral compass, proving unable to be swayed by the manipulations and ambitions of his father, and standing firmly by his belief in the kind of world that he feels that Ezran will help to create. Despite being treated as inferior or even "dumb", Soren was the first to doubt the actions and decisions of his father after Viren had initially ordered him to kill the princes. Over time, he became more reluctant to follow through with his orders but felt troubled coming to terms with his father's true colors, trying to balance his loyalty and his peace of conscience. This distrust eventually culminated in Soren and caused him to bravely abandon his previous alliances and to switch sides in order to serve the royal family as honorable member of the Crownguard, highlighting his selfless loyalty to his kingdom and friends. While he still contained his goofy side, he grew to be a little wiser and more aware of his own decisions and feelings.
Soren was cautious, bordering on paranoid when confronting his father in the Katolis dungeons, showing a fear of being manipulated again. Despite his hurt and anger, Soren was willing to swallow his feelings and offered his heart to his father as a sacrifice if it meant saving the citizens of Katolis, showing how Soren was unwilling to let his personal issues interfere with his duties to the people and was ready to die if it meant protecting innocent lives.

Soren is an expert swordsman in the elite group of soldiers tasked with protecting the King of Katolis. He is the eldest son of High Mage Viren, but couldn't be less like his meticulous father. On the outside, Soren is brash and overconfident, but with his sister Claudia, he's a giant goofball. His joke-telling has a long way to catch up with his physical prowess, and unfortunately, the human brain is not a muscle that gets stronger with more squats. |

Skills and Abilities
Combatant
As a member of the Crownguard, Soren possesses remarkable sword-fighting skills, making him an extremely skilled warrior in combat. His skills are at such a high caliber, that he is usually tasked with leading troops on missions. Soren's talent came at an early age, with his being the youngest member of the Crownguard in history. Despite this, his talent is sometimes tampered by his tendency towards showboating. He also has a high resourcefulness to temporarily knockout an Earthblood Elf with only a gourd and protect his sister from the fall without his armor and still remain conscious.
Physical Strength
Soren has great speed and strength due to his training as a knight; he exercises daily and it's implied that Soren eats a lot of healthy foods such as salads.[17] He was able to climb the Storm Spire quickly[15], move through water with his armor on[18], handle multiple punches from Elmer[7], and carry Corvus while keeping up with Zym at the same time.[19]
Strategy
As a member of the Crownguard, Soren is skilled in battlefield and siege strategy. He was able to quickly identify the most likely place to keep a heavy, anti-siege weapon in a town he barely knew, and then deployed it.[20] This shows that despite his goofy personality, Soren is quite logical and intelligent in matters about combat and civil security. Additionally, he was the one who devised the plan to smuggle Ezran and Bait out of Katolis along with the assistance of Corvus, Lujanne, Phoe-Phoe, Barius, and Opeli. This again showcases Soren's mind for strategy along with his firm comprehension of routine military surveillance. Soren also understands when they have no choice but to retreat, prioritizing everyone's safety and utilizing all their resources and people, such as convincing his dad to protect the citizens when they were under attack from Sol Regem.[21]
Wisdom
Soren has grown to be more understanding and compassionate with humans and other Xadian creatures alike, so much so he was able to make hard choices such as finding a way to stop his father and protect the Dragon Prince.[22] Soren was able to understand Calllum, Ezran, and Rayla's emotions, encouraged them to face their fears, and take a stand.[15] He was also able to encourage Elmer to be himself and despite being treated with cruelty by Finnegrin, he has all the strength he needs to fight back.[7]
Equipment
- Sword: Soren is almost always seen armed with his sword. When first facing off against Rayla, he shows an unnecessary display of skill, much to Claudia and Rayla's exasperation.
Trivia
- The name "Soren" means "stern" in Danish,[23] which is rather unfitting since his character is pretty laid back.
- When Viren gives Soren his mission in the episode "Through the Ice", the moment Soren comprehends his father's intent, his eyes can be seen dilating. This is a common physiological response when adrenaline is introduced into the bloodstream.
- In early concepts, Claudia and Soren were the same character but were later split into two separate ones.[24] During this development phase, a brief designing detour imagined Soren to have black hair and a more intense demeanor, as opposed to his now laid back personality.[25]
- When creating Soren, the artists sought to balance his expressions between sneering bully and lovable doof.[25]
- The audition description for Soren was written along the lines of "Think James Spader in an '80s movie but with a heart. Think Joey from Friends with a sword."[26]
- Soren tends to eat a daunting amount of butter.[27]
- The scar on Soren's eyebrow was caused during an attempt to mimic Corvus's scar, the intention being to shave a line through his eyebrow. However, a mess up resulted in an actual cut and scar.[14]
- Soren likes pancakes, butter, and his muscles. He dislikes the moon, moths, and magic (especially if it involves something gross).[28]
- Soren has ACHOO Syndrome, a reflex condition that causes sneezing in response to numerous stimuli, such as looking at bright lights.[29]
- When he was young, Soren had a high case of asthma as a child with trouble breathing and was on the verge of dying, but it was healed due to Viren's dark magic.[30]
- Soren had a dragon plush when he was a child, which foreshadows his loyalty to Team Zym and Zubeia.
