Immortals

"The Immortals. Bestowed with righteous power by Daedessa the Builder. Their charge? To defend Sanctuary against the Burning Hells. To use their strength to keep the relentless demons at bay. To be a beacon of hope and light. But victories are temporary, and the Immortals can never relent or yield. Even if all hope seems lost, they must find the courage to stand defiant for all time."

The Immortals are ancestral guardians of Sanctuary, empowered to fight demons by the Eternal Crown.[2]

Lore

Immortals-carving

An order of sacred knights,[1] the Immortals are "the most elite heroes" of the mortal realm,[3] charged with protecting Sanctuary from demonkind. However, their tremendous strength leaves them at risk of corruption or burning out spectacularly. Most Immortals serve as elite Knights of Westmarch, but they owe a deeper allegiance to Daedessa; the nephalem who founded the order. The Immortals believe that Sanctuary's future—not just one kingdom or one age—rests on their armored shoulders.[1]

The Immortals keep their spoils inside a vault,[4] which includes a plethora of tools that aid them in their eternal watch over Sanctuary.[3]

Recall a Friend

A single Immortal who bears the Eternal Crown leads the Immortals. The leader is accompanied by four lieutenants with crowns of their own. If an Immortal falls, their name and those of their four lieutenants are engraved on the Wall of Honor.[3]

The uniforms of the Immortals are designed for both battle and rest, though it is rare for Immortals to ever find the latter.[5]

Scribes are apprenticed to the Immortals, but are paid poorly.[6]

As the Immortals are based in Westmarch, it is part of their duties to protect the city, but only if the situation warrants it.[7][8]

Though distasteful, the Immortals at times employ foul magics to ensure victory in the Cycle of Strife.[8]

History

"Kion and his Immortals. Akeba and her Shadows. An endless Cycle of Strife."
Immortals-fallen

Long ago, the nephalem Daedessa bid her son, Kion, form a group whose sole purpose would be the protection of Sanctuary from the Burning Hells. Kion obliged, and created the Immortals.[4] Daedessa wrought the armor of the greatest of their number.[9]

In secret however, Daedessa bid her daughter, Akeba, to form a group that would constantly test the Immortals. Akeba called this group the Shadows, and they constantly tested the Immortals. It was agreed that should the Shadows ever overthrow the current reign, they would take possession of the Eternal Crown and become the new Immortals.[4]

Cycle of Strife

For a time, the Immortals successfully kept the demons of Hell at bay.[10] However, events went awry for the Immortals when they battled against a force of demons in a forest, led by Rakanoth.[11] The outcome of this battle is unclear, but it appears that it did not go in the Immortals' favor. Whatever the case, it was after this that the Shadows moved against the Immortals.[12] The Shadows emerged triumphant, with Akeba becoming the next Immortal. She began the Cycle of Strife, which ensured that the Shadows would always test the Immortals, beginning a state of affairs that lasted well into 1270,[4] by which point the strife between the factions was escalating.[1] c. 1272, both groups fought for control of the Accursed Towers.[13]

When Diablo unleashed his forces on Sanctuary, his growing influence warped sections of the mortal realm into a nightmarish hellscape. Witnessing their home being slowly overtaken by dark forces, the usually warring Immortals and Shadows put out a contract on their shared enemy. Come one, come all![14]

The Unmaking of Sanctuary

Immortals Muster

Late 1273, the Immortals' mages divined a demonic threat amassing in the north. They began mobilizing the full force of their navy and invited every adventurer or faction willing to volunteer. They were later approached by the Shard-seeker, who informed them that the threat was Diablo, and that they had a weapon which could stop the Prime Evil. They then left to gather their allies for the journey.[15]

The first ships to arrive at the World's Crown met abandoned fishing villages with intestines strewn about.[16] They proceeded to create an outpost near the shore. They pressed inland and set up several outposts, along with a forward outpost that overlooked a heavily defended demonic monolith at the heart of the island.[17]

Some time later, portals opened between the camps, releasing toxic mists that flood the mind of any who enters it with visions of madness. The mist blocked all routes between the outposts, and isolated the Immortals' main camp from the rest of the island.[17] The Immortals trapped in the inland camp were continually subjected to the maddening visions until their sanity began to erode. They began mutilating themselves, believing they were casting out their weaknesses.[18] Eventually a sword was passed around which they used to pluck out their eyes.[19] The survivors were changed by this experience, and were no different from monsters.[20]

BoH Shipwreck

The Claw Viper battalion—led by Commander Nimith—was the final battalion to depart. Accompanying them was the Shard-seeker and some of their allies—the Sisterhood of the Sightless Eye, the Shadow Wolves and Veradani from Mount Zavain. After months on sea, they approached the island, but were best by maddening mist that crashed their ships before they could reach shore.[21]

The survivors made it to the Immortal Camp. There, Nimith reported to General Zuros—the overall leader of the expedition—about their experience, and of the angelic blade wielded by the Shard-seeker which saved them from maddening mists on their way to the camp, and was able to destroy a portal.[22]

General Zuros gave the Shard-seeker a mission to use their angelic weapon to close the portals producing the mists and secure the army's advance. Nimith was given command of the vanguard that would attack after the mists have been cleared, while Zuros remained at the camp to coordinate the operation.[17]

Unmaking Wave

The Shard-seeker succeeded with some losses,[23] and the Immortals' army and their allies marched to the monolith at the Crater of Unmaking.[24] As they arrived the Crater, Diablo began the ritual to unmake Sanctuary. Each note of the corrupted angelsong of Verathiel—a fallen angel broken beforehand by Diablo[25]—spread throughout the island, disintegrated every living thing it passed. The Immortals suffered heavy losses from this,[26] though few escaped by literally going deep underground.[24] After the catastrophic loss of their comrades, the Immortals' fear petrified into fury.[27]

Gameplay

Players can function as Immortals in Diablo Immortal; this is an entirely opt-in feature.[4]

To join the Immortals, a player must be at level 43,[28] have finished the Bilefen questline, and found the Timeworn Scroll in the Ancient Arena. Beyond this, however, the player must progress through the Shadows.[29]

There can only be up to 300 Immortals[30] on a server. Shadows, of which there are an unlimited number, are constantly trying to displace the current group of Immortals. Once the Shadows reach a certain point in their progression, the Rite of Exile event is triggered.[4] Beyond this, a player will be transformed into an Immortal boss in the Challenge of the Immortal event, where they will gain a massive power buff and unique abilities.[31]

If a Shadows Dark Clan beats the other Dark Clans and overthrows the Immortals, then that winning Dark Clan will become the Immortal Clan. Players in an Immortal Clan will stay together as a unit and can invite up to two other Dark Clans to become Immortal Allied Clans. When the Immortals’ reign ends, as all reigns must, the Immortal Clan will return to being a normal Clan as the Cycle begins anew.[32]

Immortal-lieutenants

A single Immortal leader bears the Eternal Crown, and four lieutenants have crowns of their own. Each crown grants an extraordinary power once it has reached a certain level of progression thanks to the reign's Dominance. A mixture of offensive and defensive buffs will emanate from these Legendary items, amplifying the wearer’s might as well as that of other Immortals in close proximity.[3]

Immortals need to complete weekly goals to gain Sigils of Dominance, which can be contributed to the Eternal Crown to progress towards the next Age of the reign. Rewards are given out for each Age reached.

Immortals have exclusive access to the Kion's Ordeal event, and can take part in the Raid the Vault event from the defense side.[4] The Immortals also have access to the Corvus Expedition.[33]

If a player is a member of the Shadows, they will encounter Immortals as enemies in contracts. Immortal monsters include the Immortal Champion, Immortal Warrior, and Immortal Marksman.

The Anointed Immortal, Exalted Immortal and Immortal Veteran cosmetic sets are themed around the Immortals.

Development

Originally as Immortals completed tasks (I.e., Daily Goals) they would accumulate Essentia, a resource to spend which enables attempts on raids like Kion’s Ordeal.[3] Essentia was removed as a resource and the daily goals were changed to weekly in the September 21 2023 update.[34]

Trivia

This section contains facts and trivia relevant to this article.
  • The Immortals appear to use their own writing system. In the contract "Artful Replacement," their letter uses its own alphabet, whereas every other manuscript in the game uses the Roman alphabet.

Discrepencies

Immortals vs Demons
  • Khazra appear in the Cycle of Strife trailer for Diablo Immortal, showing ancient nephalem Immortals battling khazra and other demons. This is either an error (as the khazra were formed after the Mage Clan Wars), or indicative that the original group of Immortals were formed and/or were active well after the Sin War.
  • In Diablo Immortal, the Immortals' task of defending Sanctuary is put only in the context of defending it from Hell. According to Book of Lorath however, Kion was tasked with defending Sanctuary against all threats, including angels.
