Verathiel

Biography

After her birth, Verathiel pledged herself in Auriel' service, imbuing herself with the archangel's virtue. She was one of the attendants of the Worldstone in the Pandemonium Fortress. Verathiel would sing of creation to the Worldstone, and with it, worlds and life were born of the dreams of the High Heavens.^[1]

Verathiel despaired when the Worldstone was stolen on her watch. To atone for her shame, she brought steel and death to the enemies of heaven. When the heavens discovered Sanctuary, Verathiel asked her mistress for them to invade Sanctuary and retrieve the Worldstone, but Auriel refused, as she wanted peace.^[1]

Utterly relentless, Verathiel was the leader of a group of angel sentinels. They discovered the Realm of Damnation as it was taking shape. Cut off from the High Heavens, they carved out a foothold in the realm, battling demons over the eons.^[3]

Eventually, her cadre was overwhelmed and she was imprisoned by the Baron of Pestilence for an unknown amount of time. In 1270, the Shard-seeker encountered her^[4] and freed her with the help of Yl'nira after killing the Baron^[5]. With the help of the dagger, she was able to cleanse the area and turn it to a foothold^[5].

With the Shard-seeker's aid, she was able to free two other^[6] angels.^[7] Unfortunately, the third one was already corrupted and had to be killed.^[8] She then learnt that Skarn was extracting the Light of Heaven to create demons in pits^[9]. Together with the Shard-seeker they were able to destroy the pits^[9].

She was one of the angels that created a portal to Skarn's Throne for the Shard-seeker to battle him. She then had to rush in to save the Shard-seeker from the resurrected spirit of Diablo but the portal, now unstable closed behind her. Unfortunately, Diablo overpowered her,^[10] and her sword fell into the depths of Hell.^[11]

Two years later, Verathiel was held captive and tortured by Diablo. He projected an image of her suffering to the Shard-seeker in order to taunt them, and show them the price of defiance.^[12]

The Unmaking

As Diablo's plans neared completion, he moved his forces (including Verathiel) to the World's Crown. Diablo devised a plan to unmake Sanctuary, and for that, he needed her essence.^[13] Verathiel still had steadfast faith in the High Heavens even after years of torture so Diablo shifted his efforts to psychological means. He reminded her of the failure of her mistress and the rest of the Angiris Council to rescue her from the Realm of Damnation even twisting the Shard-seeker's^[10] actions as abandoning her after they had no more use for her. In the height of her despair he offered her a chance to "atone" for her greatest sin; a chance to sing to the Worldstone once again. With that, Verathiel's will broke.^[1]

She was then moved to a large crater and chained to a monolith. The Bride of Hell would occasionally come by to corrupt her angelsong.^[2]

Diablo's ritual for the Unmaking was an imitation of Sanctuary's creation, and required the power of an angel, a demon and creation. He forced Verathiel to sing, with the Worldstone shard and the monolith amplifying her song in potency and range. As each note travelled, it turned all living in its path to ash, and unraveled Sanctuary in its wake.^[14][15]

Verathiel's Fate

Diablo left her after the Unmaking had been set in motion. The Shard-seeker (who survived the Song of Unmaking because of El'druin's protection)^[15] later arrived at the monolith. Verathiel attacked them, hoping for her anguish to end.^[16]

In-game

Verathiel is an NPC in Diablo Immortal. She is the companion for the Realm of Damnation storyline quests in Diablo Immortal. Verathiel makes a brief appearance in the quest Open Revolt. She returns in the Shattered Sanctuary update, where she's the boss of the Resounding Discord quest. After defeating her, the player makes a choice to either spare or kill her. If spared, she helps the player fight Diablo before he brings her under his thrall again, forcing the player to kill her.

In Diablo IV, the Shard of Verathiel is a Unique sword.

Combat

When helping the player fight Diablo, Verathiel attacks with holy bolts and rains of light.

When acting as an enemy, Verathiel uses the following attacks

• Corrupt Song: Verathiel sings, with each tone dealing AoE damage and knockback.
  • This is the ability she showed in the cutscene when Diablo began the Unmaking.
• Crystaline Cage: At the end of the song, Verathiel spawns a crystal prison at the player's location.
• Swipe: Verathiel slashes with her swords.
  • This action can be repeated.
• Blade Beam: Verathiel slashes with her swords, releasing an X-shaped beam.
• Barrage: Verathiel releases a series of rapid slashes, ending with a blade beam.
• Berserk Charge Verathiel charges to the player while slashing.
• Nova: Verathiel raises her swords up and creates numerous little blade beams that are launched with a downward slash.

In the short time she aids the player against Diablo, she attacks with Holy Bolt and Heaven's Fury.
