Cult of Terror

The Cult of Terror is a cult loyal to Diablo.

Lore

Stormpoint

In 1272, they attacked the island of Stormpoint in a bid to retrieve the Worldstone shard that had impacted the island seven years prior. As they didn't know the shard's exact location, they attacked and destroyed the Shanties.[1]

Sacrificial Pile

Of the survivors, some they took for sacrifice, others they interrogated for information concerning the shard's location. Captives that gave displeasing information were killed and their entrails read[2][3] They conducted human sacrifices in order to summon demons.[1][4]

Afterwards, they besieged Stormpoint Keep, in a bid to retrieve the Worldstone shard that resided within.[5]. Corpses of the sacrificed were gathered at different parts of Stormpoint in grotesque piles that they referred to as "sculptor's piles". This binds the souls of the victims to the piles. These souls were used by the Cultists to "sharpen their blades".[6]

The Cult succeeded in obtaining the shard and retreated from Stormpoint.[7]

Ancients' Cradle

Terror Cradle

They were unable to send the shard to Diablo because of Baal's taint within it. In order to purify the shard, they set sail on the Forgotten Sea in search of the Ancients' Cradle.[8][9]

At the Cradle, the cult tried to harness the power flowing through the land, but were rejected violently. The backlash killed some cultists, and reanimated them to fight the intruders.[10]

They then rampaged through the nearby farmlands, killing people and interrogating anyone who looked to be of importance.[11] When it bore no fruit, they headed deeper into the island to the nearest place of importance to interrogate the officials there.[12]

Dark Rebirth

Dark Rebirth

With the purified shard in hand, the cult arrived at Tristram Cathedral,[13] the place where Diablo once rose.[14] Their plan was to use powerful imprints of Diablo to perform a ritual that would open a path to their master. The strongest imprints were Albrecht, (Diablo's former host), and Tristram Cathedral (Diablo's former lair). Unfortunately, when they tried to implant the shard in his corpse he instead turned into a raging monster. With the proof of concept, they tried infecting other corpses (and some hapless civilians) with the shard, creating more Shardborne in the process. During this time, the Bride of Hell led a regiment of cultists to Leoric's Manor in search of any object in which an imprint of Diablo still lingered.[15]

Albrecht was still their link to Diablo, only if they could bring him to heel. After the Shard-seeker defeated Albrecht, the Bride of Hell connected the Shard to his dying psyche, creating a temporary realm out of his memories. Within Albrecht's mind, the Bride of Hell goes to the point with the strongest imprint of Diablo — when Albrecht became possessed. Using the imprint, she created a portal directly to Diablo in Skarn's Throne room.[15]

There, the shard is delivered to Diablo, who attunes himself to it in order to speed up his resurrection.[15]

In-game

The Cult of Terror is introduced in Diablo Immortal, in the Terror's Tide questline. Its bestiary is a mix of demon and human enemies, though all of its members are classified as demons within the game.
