Roles

Filter by whether roles are added to the lobby or not.

—Filter interface.

Roles are a game mechanic in Among Us that are randomly selected. Each role has different goals and abilities.

Overview

Both the Impostor and Crewmate roles are shown when the game begins. However, the ghost and Guardian Angel (if enabled) role can only be obtained by being killed by An Impostor or being ejected. In rare case, a player can be guardian angel or ghost in the beginning of the game, this is a bug which should be fixed soon. There are currently seven roles in Among Us which are Crewmate, Impostor, Scientist, Shapeshifter, Engineer, Noisemaker, Tracker, Phantom, Guardian Angel, and ghost. Each role has different abilities, mechanics and goal to help/to win the game.

All players have access to Admin, Customize (lobby only), Doorlog (MIRA HQ only), report, Security (all maps except MIRA HQ), use, and Vitals (all maps, except The Skeld and MIRA HQ, and Scientist).

Crewmate

Main article: Crewmate

Crewmates' goal is to complete tasks while staying alive and figuring out who the Impostor(s) are. The Crewmates win once all their tasks are completed or there are no living Impostors left in the game.

In Hide n Seek game mode, the Crewmates' only way of winning the game is to survive until the time runs out, however, Crewmates have tasks which will reduce the remaining time upon completion. Their tasks will be removed during Final Hide. Every Crewmate spawns as an Engineer, with a limited number of uses of their Vent ability as decided by the game settings.

Impostor

Main article: Impostor

Impostors are Crewmates' enemy, and their goal is to kill Crewmates while avoiding being ejected. The Impostors win when at least half of the living players are Impostors or the countdown for a critical Sabotage reaches zero. The Impostors can vent too, however the vent to option is unavailable when another player is doing the Clean Vent task at the vent that one wants to travel to, and can be used again after the task has been completed or the player exits the task.

In Hide n Seek game mode, The Impostor loses their ability to Sabotage and vent in exchange for having only 1 second of kill cooldown. Their goal is to kill every living Crewmate before the round ends. The final hide duration gives them extra speed and unlimited access to Admin table (Seek) anywhere from the map.

Ghost

Main article: Ghost

Ghosts are role that players obtain when they are killed or ejected, their goal remain the same when they are alive as ghosts still win with their team. Ghost players (barring Guardian Angels) can use their Haunt ability to spectate dead players, and Impostors can still Sabotage.

Scientist

Main article: Scientist

The Scientist is a Crewmate-style additional role added in version 2021.11.9 that was announced alongside the (unused) Sheriff role at Summer Game Fest. Players with this role are given a portable Vitals to monitor that can be accessed from anywhere on the map, however, the portable vitals only last for 5 seconds (adjustable in options) and to recharge, the Scientist must complete a task or wait for 20 seconds, if they completed all their tasks (adjustable in options). Scientists cannot use their portable vitals during Comms Sabotaged.

Engineer

Main article: Engineer

The Engineer is a Crewmate-style additional role that was added in version 2021.11.9. Players with this role are given the ability to hide or travel through vents and cannot be killed while in the vent as a result, they can stay in the vent for 5 seconds (adjustable in options) and to gain back the ability to vent, the Engineer must complete a task or wait for 20 seconds, if they completed all their tasks (adjustable in options). Engineer cannot vent during Comms Sabotaged. The vent to option is unavailable when another player is doing a Clean Vent task at the vent that one wants to travel to, and can be used again after the task has been completed/the player exits the task.

Guardian Angel

Main article: Guardian Angel

The Guardian Angel is a ghost-style additional role that was added in version 2021.11.9. Players with this role are given the ability to Protect living players from being killed, but only if they are Crewmate, Scientist or Engineer, have died and Guardian Angel is enabled. Guardian Angel can use protect on any living Crewmate with a 60 seconds cooldown (adjustable in options) for 30 seconds (adjustable in options). Guardian Angel cannot use their protect during Comms Sabotage. The protection enables a clear invisible shield that is only revealed when the Impostor tries to kill the protected, allowing the protected to also gain a chance to vote out the Impostor. Note that the Guardian Angel does not have a haunt ability, so they can only gain information of who the Impostor is via other players or ghosts.

Shapeshifter

Main article: Shapeshifter

The Shapeshifter is an Impostor-style additional role added in version 2021.11.9 that was announced on October 27, 2021. Players who have this role have the ability to transform into any other players for a limited time to trick Crewmates with a 30 seconds cooldown (adjustable in options) lasting 10 seconds (adjustable in options). After shapeshifting the Shapeshifter will leave behind evidence (adjustable in options) in the form of shrivelled-up tentacles. When shapeshifting, the player color of the Shapeshifter will fill a bubble in which the Shapeshifter shapeshifts.

Noisemaker

Main article: Noisemaker

The Noisemaker is a Crewmate-style additional role added in version version 2024.6.18. Players who have this role make an alarm when killed, alerting all other players of the location of the kill. It can be adjusted in options that Impostors cannot see the kill alert. The alert will eventually disappear after some time.

Tracker

Main article: Tracker (role)

The Tracker is a Crewmate-style additional role added in version 2024.6.18. Players who have this role can place a tracker on any other player and track them on their mini-map. The tracker ability is turned off when comms are Sabotaged and it is useful for seeking out Shapeshifters, Phantoms and Impostors as well as Engineers as the mini-map has an ability to track any venting actions and while the player itself may be different while shapeshifting, the color that shows up on the mini-map is the original player's color, giving an advantage to expose Shapeshifters. Vanished Phantoms also show up on the map.

Phantom

Main article: Phantom

The Phantom is an Impostor-style additional role added in version 2024.6.18. Players who have this role can temporarily become invisible to other players. However, the kill ability is disabled while invisible, although Sabotage and vent options are available, giving the Phantom a chance to frame another player of venting.

Unused/Removed

Sheriff

Main article: Sheriff

The Sheriff is a role that was announced alongside the Scientist at Summer Game Fest. However, it was not released in version 2021.11.9 with other additional role and hence assumed to be a cancelled project. It is currently still unknown what abilities would have came with this role, howewer, it is speculated that it works the same way as it works in Murder Mystery, the game Among Us was based on, wherein the Sheriff role is considered an innocent player albeit with the ability to kill any players, including the equivalent to Impostors. The Sheriff would, however, also die themselves if the person they killed was also innocent.

Oracle

Main article: Oracle

The Oracle is an unused role who can know for certain that one Crewmate is not An Impostor. They may be re-implemented in the future.

Rancher

Main article: Rancher

The Rancher is an additional role that was added for 1 day in version 2023.3.28 in the Horse Wrangling gamemode during the April Fools event. The role functions the same as the Impostor would in Hide n Seek.
