Tree

Trees are recurring Objects in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2][3][4][name reference needed] In most games, trees are used as blockades to limit Link from proceeding beyond them. In games such as Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, various items like Hearts and Rupees can be found in trees and knocked down by Rolling into a tree's trunk.[5] Trees go unnamed in The Minish Cap.

Location and Uses

The Legend of Zelda

The entrance to Level 1 is a gnarled Tree.

The Adventure of Link

A Link to the Past

A Link to the Past introduced Trees that react to being run into. Dashing into trees with the Pegasus Shoes in the Light World causes Apples to fall that Link can eat to replenish health. Dashing into a Light World tree may instead release several Bees that will attack Link for disturbing their home. The Dark World's Talking Timbers are trees capable of speaking to Link or, on occasion, spitting Bombs at him.

Link can see an apparition of the Flute Boy playing the Whistle on a stump for the woodland Animals of the Haunted Grove. The Lumberjacks, A. Bumpkin and B. Bumpkin, can be found cutting a large tree saying that they can feel something odd about it. Later on, if Link charges into it with the Pegasus Boots, a stump with a hole will appear.

Link's Awakening

Some Trees are infested with Bees in Link's Awakening. Some, called Treasure Trees, will drop Bombs, Fairies, or even Secret Seashells after being hit with the Pegasus Boots.

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time, there are many stumps in the Lost Woods where Skull Kids play flutes. Trees can also be found in Hyrule Field and can be rolled into, causing them to shake and drop Arrows, Deku Nuts, Rupees, Magic Jars, and occasionally Gold Skulltulas.

Majora's Mask

The Skull Kid first encountered Tatl and Tael in the hollowed remains of a Tree's trunk, where all three were attempting to escape the Rain. At some point the Skull Kid later kills the Deku Butler's Son by cursing his body to resemble sad-looking tree.

Oracle of Seasons

Some Trees are capable of changing with the season in Oracle of Seasons. Some trees will decay and shrink in Winter, allowing Link to move beyond them and access new areas. The Rod of Seasons, which forces the seasons to cycle depending on the available Power of Seasons, can only be activated upon tree stumps. The Maku Tree is a character who guides Link through Holodrum to retrieve the Essences of Nature in order to restore his power. Other trees, known as Mystical Trees, bear Mystical Seeds and serve as destinations for Warping with the Gale Seeds. Link can also plant Gasha Seeds to grow Gasha Tree.

At the beginning of Link's journey in Holodrum, Din can be seen dancing atop a tree stump.

Oracle of Ages

Some Trees grow and die over the course of Time, consequently affect the landscape between the Past and Present in Oracle of Ages. The Maku Tree is a character who guides Link through Labrynna to retrieve the Essences of Nature in order to restore her power. Other trees, known as Mystical Trees, bear Mystical Seeds and serve as destinations for Warping with the Gale Seeds. Link can also plant Gasha Seeds to grow Gasha Tree.

At the beginning of Link's journey in Labrynna, Nayru can be seen singing atop a tree stump.

Four Swords

The Wind Waker

Outset Trees

In The Wind Waker, small Tree saplings are found scattered across many Islands on the Great Sea and in several Dungeons, where they may either be used for effect or act as barriers; these thin, young trees can easily be felled with a single swipe from a Sword. Additionally, each year, the Great Deku Tree sends off some of the Koroks to plant Forest Trees all throughout the Islands. This is done in the hope that, as the forests spread and the trees grew, they will consolidate the remaining land above the Great Sea, and allow some of the land lost during the Great Flood to be reclaimed from the depths.

Four Swords Adventures

Some Trees in Four Swords Adventures require the teamwork of all four Links to move or even lift to unblock paths.

The Minish Cap

Tree Stumps act as Minish Portals, which allow Link to shrink to the size of a Minish or return to the size of a Human with the help of the Minish mage, Ezlo. Dashing into certain Trees occasionally knocks loose Rupees, Fairies, or Kinstone Pieces.

Twilight Princess

Some Trees bear Beehives in Twilight Princess, which are a source of Bee Larva if they are destroyed. As the Seasons change each time Link enters Hena's Fishing Hole, the trees inside change to reflect that given season.

Phantom Hourglass

Spirit Tracks

Skyward Sword

Some trees have bees some don't.

A Link Between Worlds

Trees in A Link Between Worlds exhibit similar behavior to their A Link to the Past counterparts, but with an added chance of a Green Apple appearing in place of a standard red Apple. One of these trees, the StreetPass Tree situated just west of Link's House, has its apple visibly displayed and is affected by StreetPass functionality.

Tri Force Heroes

Breath of the Wild

Various types of Trees appear across Hyrule Kingdom. Depending on a tree's thickness, it may be cut down into a log with a sharp Weapon, by being caught in the blast radius of a Remote Bomb or Bomb Barrel, or by being struck by Lightning. Thin to medium-sized trees can be felled in these manners; thicker ones cannot. Trees that can be cut down may drop Acorns, Korok Leaves, or Tree Branches in the process. Fruit-bearing Apple and palm Trees also tend to bear Apples and Palm Fruits. Additionally, trees can be climbed and used for surveying the landscape with the Sheikah Slate's Scope.[6] Monsters are also capable of felling trees, though they do not actively attempt to cut any. During Malice Naydra's rampage on Mount Lanayru, it may fly through wooded areas on the mountain, knocking down any trees in its path.

Trees that are too thick to be cut down often bear Acorns or Chickaloo Tree Nuts as well as Bird nests, which contain Bird Eggs in their canopies. Some of these trees also bear Rocks which reveal Koroks when lifted. Some large trees, particularly those near the Great Hyrule Forest, feature cavities which resemble faces. Treasure Chests and other Items and Objects can occasionally be found inside these cavities.

Tears of the Kingdom

There are normal trees and monster trees called Evermean.

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time, the Deku Tree is the guardian of the Kokiri and of their forest. He protects the Kokiri's Emerald, one of the three Spiritual Stones.

Cool Image

At the beginning of the game, the Deku Tree sends Navi the Fairy to summon Link to him, explaining to the young boy that he has been cursed by Ganondorf. Link is asked to journey Inside the Deku Tree, the first dungeon of the game, and destroy the root of the curse, the parasite known as Queen Gohma. Afterwards, the Great Deku Tree details Ganondorf's motives, the Golden Goddesses, and the Triforce they created. The Deku Tree withers and dies soon after due to the effects of the curse. Before passing on, he tasks Link with saving all of Hyrule from Ganondorf, directing him to meet Princess Zelda at Hyrule Castle outside the forest, and entrusting him with the Kokiri's Emerald.

When Link returns to Kokiri Forest seven years later as an adult, he finds that it has been overrun by monsters due to the Deku Tree's absence. After clearing the Forest Temple and awakening Saria as a Sage, the Deku Tree Sprout takes root in the ground before his predecessor, and the monsters plaguing the forest subsequently vanish.

The Wind Waker

The Great Deku Tree acts as the guardian of the Forest Haven, home of the Koroks, in The Wind Waker. To them, the Great Deku Tree is considered a father figure to the children of the forest, for it is him that protects them from evil. One thing that sets the Deku Tree of the Great Sea apart from his predecessor is that each year, he sends off some of the Koroks to plant Forest Trees throughout the islands. This is done in the hope that, as the forests spread and the trees grew, they will consolidate the remaining land above the Great Sea, and allow some of the land lost during the Great Flood to be reclaimed from the depths. It also rejuvenates his power, for if his power were to wane, the life of the Koroks would fade as well.

When Link first meets the Great Deku Tree, hordes of ChuChus are invading his face. After the young hero eliminates all of them, the Great Deku Tree mistakes him for the legendary Hero of Time due to his clothes, and begins to speak the ancient Hylian language. The Great Deku Tree realizes his error, and it is then that he realizes why Link is there: to receive Farore's Pearl from him. Just as the guardian of the forest is about to begin the annual Korok ceremony in order to give the pearl to Link, Linder informs the Great Deku Tree of Makar's accident, and the ceremony is called off. After Link rescues Makar from the depths of the Forbidden Woods with the help of the Deku Leaf given to him by the Great Deku Tree himself, the ceremony begins, and in return, the Great Deku Tree hands over Farore's Pearl, as promised.

Hyrule Historia states that this Deku Tree descended from his Ocarina of Timecounterpart and the Encyclopedia explicitly identifies him as the grown-up Deku Tree Sprout.

Deku Tree Birthplace: The Forest Haven

The Deku Tree is both an earth spirit and the guardian of the forest. He has lived for many long years, so his wisdom is vast. However, since his roots run deep into the earth, he cannot move. As a result, he is often afflicted by parasitic enemies...

Breath of the Wild

Imag238278374832748

In Breath of the Wild, The Great Deku Tree lives deep within the Lost Woods, at the center of the Korok Forest. He watched over the Master Sword in its pedestal for 100 years prior to the events of Breath of the Wild. He informs Link of the dangers of pulling out the Master Sword without being strong enough. If Link fails to pull out the Master Sword, the Great Deku Tree belittles him, stating that Link has grown weak.

Inside the Great Deku Tree's Navel, there are two shops, the General Shoppe and the Spore Store, as well as an Inn built for Link. Many Koroks live around, inside, and on top of him.

Tears of the Kingdom

Before the events of Tears of the Kingdom, Link and Zelda return to the Korok Forest to retrieve the Master Sword from its pedestal after Link left it in the Deku Tree's care to restore its power after the events of Breath of the Wild. The Deku Tree greets the couple, and tells them the success of the Master Sword's complete restoration. It beckons Link to pull the sword, and tells them farewell upon their departure.

After the events of the Upheaval, the Great Deku Tree is found sick with gloom pouring from its interior, and claims to have a stomach-ache. Entering the interior, Link finds a chasm that leads to a chamber (the Deku Tree's stomach) where the origin of The Great Deku Tree's sickness is found to be Phantom Ganon corrupting it with gloom. After defeating him, the Great Deku Tree thanks Link for freeing him from his curse and notices that he no longer wields the Master Sword with him. Consulting with the Deku Tree, he senses the Master Sword in the sky, but notes that it is 'moving.' Even he does not understand it, but suggests Link should find a creative way to reach the 'moving' sword.

Echoes of Wisdom

The Deku Tree resides in the heart of the Eternal Forest, accessible only to those who've earned the Sanctions of Din, Nayru, and Farore. As the guardian of the Ancient Ruins where the Triforce is hidden, his presence is a constant reminder of the deep magic that protects these relics. After Princess Zelda completes "The Prime Energy and Null" for the first time, she can revisit the Deku Tree to inquire about the Echoes she has yet to acquire, making him a key guide in her journey.
