Bourei Banchou (Japanese: 亡霊番長 Bōrei Banchō) is the 1st episode of the Yo-kai Watch Shadowside anime. It was broadcasted in Japan on April 13, 2018.
Summary
Tate follows his older sister Summer, and discovers the secret Yo-kai Detective Team that she has formed alongside her friends Cole and Bruno. He also becomes aware of the existence of Yo-kai as a result.
Plot
The episode starts off with a kid walking in an alley way, where he is then attack by a mysterious Yo-kai.
After the opening credits, the episode begins again with Tate following his sister, Summer, due to his suspicions on why she's has been coming home late lately. After some time, Summer ends up in Bruno's room where she is then scolded by Bruno for being late, which ends up causing a small argument between the two.
After the argument finishes, Bruno then informs Summer and Cole about a case going around.
Soon, Tate gets caught spying on Summer by Bruno and the Yo-kai. Shocked at the sight of the Yo-kai, Tate accuses Bruno and Cole of being an occult group that lured in his sister before running off.
Eventually Summer and the others go looking for the Yo-kai that their case is about. Summer then comes up with an idea to lure in the Yo-kai by having Bruno pretend to be a bully for Cole. However due to their poor acting skills, Summer calls it off just before a woman, believing Bruno to be a bully, scolds him.
Soon, Summer's group hears a scream and ends up finding the Yo-kai of their case, Basher. Summer ends up summoning Jibanyan to help aid in the fight against Basher. Unknown to everyone, Tate is actually watching the whole scene go on by.
After Basher retreats, due to seeing Tate, Summer's group run into Tate again who ends up running away from them again, refusing to believe in Yo-kai.
Later on, Tate runs into a criminal gang run by a man named, Shiroda. They end up finding Tate and proceed to beat him up to a pulp.
Refusing to surrender or be a coward, Tate indirectly calls Basher and get him to beat up the criminals. However a mysterious figure ends up blowing a strange dart at Shiroda, turning him into a Wicked Yo-kai that could easily defeat Basher.
Summer's group then arrives, just before the Yo-kai Watch on Summer's wrist flies off to Tate instead. Deciding that the watch chose Tate for the case, Summer teaches Tate how to summon Komasan to help defeat the Wicked Yo-kai.
After the battle is won by Komasan and Basher, Tate then confirms that Basher is indeed his dead childhood friend, Kenchi. The two share a tearful goodbye to each other and Basher befriends Tate.
Even after all this, Tate states to Summer's group that he refuses to believe in Yo-kai, and that everything that happened was just a dream, before walking off alone, admitting to himself that he does actually believe in Yo-kai.
The next day, Summer's class gets a mysterious new student who refers to Summer's classmates as 'humans'.

- It is revealed that the Yo-kai Watch Arcane can be worn by someone other than the chosen user. As it chooses Tate as its second rightful owner.
- It is due to both Summer and Tate were children of the original Yo-Kai Watch Master, Nathan Adams, implies the reason of Tate being chosen too.
- This episode marks the first time Tate uses the Yo-kai Watch Arcane.
- This episode makes a reference to the Wicked Yo-kai.
- This is the first episode of the series to show that people other than the holders of a Yo-kai Watch can be given the Yo-kai's symbol of friendship (Keystones).
- Unlike its successor series premieres (Way Too Average Life and Shock!! His First Love Was ***), this episode did not receive a formal "next episode preview" in the finale of the original anime, with the original broadcast of it only including a brief 5-second teaser with an announcer saying the title of the series.
