Biology
In his Lightside form, Banchou appears to be a smaller, softer version of his Shadowside form. The fangs coming out of Bourei Banchou's mouth move to his shoulders. He also looks more like a cartoonish ghost.
In his Shadowside form, Bourei Banchou is a muscular humanoid Yo-kai with slightly lighter maroon hair.
He wears a Japanese school uniform, in a style associated with juvenile delinquents, as well as having a "sarashi" wrapped around his abdomen. In his left hand he has a green bracelet. He is also surrounded by "hitodama."
In his episode it was shown that he has multiple abilities. He has immense strength, as he was able to take out Sly, in his Shadowside form, in one hit. He can also teleport (he did it when he saw Tate) and fall like a meteor. He is also very strong defensively, as he was able to resist Jibanyan's Soultimate and a laser beam fired by an evil Yo-kai. However, he is not invincible, as shown in his battle with Jingeki.

In the anime

Bourei Banchou debuts in SS001. He seems to be causing trouble by hitting people on the streets. However, when Tate sees it, he seems to realize something.
It later turns out that the people he was hitting weren't doing any good, and Bourei Banchou was simply trying to avoid that. Joining forces with Tate and Komasan, Bourei Banchou defeats some young criminals, even after one has been transformed into a Evil Yo-kai by a mysterious figure.
Tate reveals that he has come to realize that Bourei Banchou is, in fact, his deceased best friend Kenji, who taught him the importance of being brave when he was young.
After a tearful goodbye with his old friend, Tate receives Bourei Banchou's keystone.
In SS005, Tate summons Bourei Banchou to fight Jingeki, but is quickly defeated.
In SS020, Summer summons Bourei Banchou (along with his other Yo-kai friends) to see Filmlin's movie. During the movie, he runs out of the room due to fear of the movie.
He returns in the penultimate episodes of the Shadowside series, as one of the Yo-kai who fought Haten Soranaki.
In the manga

Banchou makes his debut in Bourei Banchou playing a similar role as he does in the anime. There is a rumor that he shows up whenever people are bullied. Tate goes to find this Yo-kai by searching for people being bullied. He summons Himoji (Shadowside) to deal with the bullies and saves the man however he responds negatively and it is revealed he was being possessed by a Wicked Yo-kai. The Yo-kai attacks Tate but is quickly attacked and defeated by Basher. Tate recognizes a move Basher used and asks if he is his late childhood friend, Kenji. Basher tells him he's right and is happy to be able to see Tate again. It is revealed that not only did Kenji protect Tate when he was younger but when the two were even younger, Tate protected Kenji from another bully because Kenji was very small. Unknowingly, both of them inspired each other to do good. The two become friends again with Basher giving Tate his keystone.
Etymology
"Bourei Banchou" is derived from "bōrei" (Japanese: 亡霊 "ghost" or "departed soul"), and "banchō" (Japanese: 番長 "gang leader" or "delinquent boss"). "Banchou" is a diminutive form of his Shadowside.
Origin
As the name suggests, he's based on the stereotypical image of a banchou. The typical image of a banchou is an uncouth fighter who has a strong sense of gang honor, which is true to his personality.
Trivia
- He wears the same green armband as he did when he was human.
- His build and outfit resembles Jotaro Kujo’s from Stardust Crusaders.
- He is voiced by Tōru Nara, who also voiced Bear in the original series.
