~ Viridi enters the scene. |
Viridi is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Dark Pit) of the 2012 third-person shooter game Kid Icarus: Uprising, the third installment in the Kid Icarus video game series.
She is the Goddess of Nature, the leader of the Forces of Nature, and was a major antagonist in the second story arc, but later becomes one of the supporting characters in the third story arc. While not evil, she is under the delusion that all humans are unworthy of being kept alive because they are cruel to nature, and it was her main goal to eradicate them.
She is voiced by Makiko Ohmoto in the Japanese version. In the English dubbed version, she is voiced by Hynden Walch in Kid Icarus: Uprising and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and Dayci Brookshire in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Personality
Viridi is presented as a destructive and short-tempered goddess, albeit for somewhat understandable reasons. She despises humanity, claiming that many of their actions such as decimating the land, slaughtering wildlife, and killing each other disrupts the natural order. As such, Viridi desires to wipe out humanity through the use of her Reset Bombs and bring the Earth back to its natural state. When it comes to killing humans, Viridi is merciless and sadistic, wiping out entire colonies of soldiers while laughing to herself in the resulting destruction. Despite this, she also opposes Hades and the Underworld Army, being against their unchecked destruction against other realms, as well as them harvesting and desecrating souls, claiming that they're even worse than humans. All of this makes Viridi less evil and more twisted, as she seeks to help the Earth, but through using reprehensible methods such as mass murder.
Throughout the game, more of Viridi's personality is displayed through her dialogue, portraying her as snarky, snappish, short-tempered, arrogant, and a tad immature (the latter of which may serve as a reflection for her child-like appearance). She sometimes boasts on the power of her army in an effort to make herself look more competent and impressive, as she did with Hades, though she's susceptible to losing her composure as well. When Pit was preparing to destroy her Reset Bomb Depot, she ordered her troops to defend it while she was visibly panicking. Virdi enjoys teasing others, often doing so with Pit, both before and after she switches sides.
Viridi can also be hypocritical, as she refused to take account that she along with Hades were responsible for causing the Aurum Invasion when Palutena hypothesized that they were likely drawn to Earth by the war between the Underworld and Nature. She instead pointed blame at Palutena and her conflict with the Underworld. Though when Pit takes a jab at her involvement in the chaos with her Reset Bombs, she orders him to be quiet and for them to focus on taking down the Aurum.
Despite her behavior, Viridi isn't heartless as she shows to care for her Forces of Nature army, affectionately referring to them as her children. During the Aurum Invasion, Viridi was willing to side with Pit and Palutena (as well as a short and indirect alliance with Hades) in order to face the destructive space invaders and prevent them from destroying the planet. It is here where Viridi displays a more caring and thoughtful side towards Pit, helping and saving his life on two occasions. Ten years following the Aurum's defeat, she was willing to support Pit and help him save Palutena who was under the Chaos Kin's control in an effort to save his goddess from the creature who intended to devour her soul, even allowing Pit to rest and prepare in her domain. While she strongly denies it, Viridi does grow to genuinely care for Pit, which Palutena teases her for having a soft spot for him while calling her "Little Miss Cactus" (in the Japanese dub of the game, the Goddess of Light pokes fun at her by calling her a tsundere).
Viridi's kinder side is shown on numerous occasions throughout the game. Like Palutena, she grants him the power of flight, leaves drops for him to replenish his health, and on one occasion, prepares a hot spring for him in the Chariot Master's temple. Like Palutena, she aids Pit in more teasing ways, such as shooting him from a cannon so he could reach the Chariot Master's temple despite his clear objections. In one mission, she happily quips about her and Pit fighting side by side, even jokingly referring to him as a private in her army. While her opinion on humanity doesn't waver, she becomes more supportive in Pit and Palutena's fight against Hades and the Underworld, while also showing up to watch the final battle.
As the Goddess of Nature, Viridi obeys the natural cycle and does not oppose the crueller aspects of nature, such as the circle of life. She is very eco-friendly and resourceful, stating that she does things like use cloth shopping bags, compost her food scraps, and organize her recycling into fifteen types. She also displays some sense of vanity, claiming that she takes good care of her skin and that her fingernails are more powerful than any of the claw weapons in the game (which may or may not be boasting on her part). While well grounded, Viridi appears to believe in things such as spirit and fate as well, supporting Pit's motivation to defeat the Underworld. She also reads fortunes according to Phosphora.
Like Pit and Palutena, Viridi does appear to possess medium awareness and knowledge that she resides within a video game, though she appears avoidant of discussing it unlike the other two. When Pit complains about getting a loading screen during his long climb up the Chariot Master's tower, Viridi tells him to be quiet in fear that the player will hear them, suggesting that she fears the player's capabilities and what they could do. On another occasion, when Pit compared Underworld Komaytos to Metroids while fighting the Chaos Kin's forces, Viridi snaps at him and shouts in order for him to be quiet, telling him not to draw comparisons between game universes and not to spread rumors.
Biography
Viridi makes her debut in Chapter 12. After Pit the seething masses she drops a Reset Bomb, a weapon of mass destruction that is able to "reset" a location to its former, more natural state.
Pit sets out to take down the Forces of Nature and Viridi's Reset Bomb Depot by taking down one of Viridi's strongest minions, Cragalanche and later the pod, core of the facility where the Reset Bombs are being made.
She and the Forces of Nature had even more plans that required her commanders like Phosphora and Arlon.
Other Media
Super Smash Bros.
Viridi makes an appearance in the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She makes a cameo in the stage Reset Bomb Forest, before a Reset Bomb is unleashed.
Viridi also appears during Palutena's Guidance. If the player plays as Pit on the stage Palutena's Temple and performs a down taunt for exactly one frame, Viridi may appear and inform Pit on a select handful of characters he's confronting. During the Palutena's Guidance, it has been implied that Viridi has a crush on Link, and that Dark Pit has sided with the Forces of Nature. Dark Pit's wings glow green during his version of the Power of Flight, meaning that Viridi is gifting him with the ability.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's "Adventure Mode: World of Light", Viridi appears as a legendary support spirit. Her ability increases all damage taken to metal opponents. She can be obtained by summoning her with the cores of Xerneas, Alraune, and any neutral and support core, or by defeating her in a Spirit Battle against a Mii Swordfighter and Kirby. She inhabits a Mii Swordfighter wearing her outfit, with the Mii's voice provided by Viridi's Japanese voice actor Makiko Ohmoto. The one-minute time limit means if the Reset Bomb strikes the ground.
Powers and Abilities
Being a Goddess, Viridi is immortal. She is highly intelligent, able to command a large army. She also has some of the same abilities as Palutena, such as giving Pit the ability to fly. However, it is unknown if Viridi can manipulate any kind of plants or vegetation, though it is possible since she is the Goddess of Nature.
Trivia
- Despite being a major antagonist, she has never met Pit face-to-face until after the player clears Chapter 18, only briefly revealing herself in a vision.
- Viridi has two weapons named and modelled after herself in the game; the Viridi Claws and the Viridi Palm.
