~ A poem on Magnamalo. |
Magnamalo is the flagship monster and a major antagonist in Monster Hunter Rise. A bloodthirsty and vicious Fanged Wyvern, Magnamalo is infamous for appearing every 50 years to prey on monsters fleeing from Thunder Serpent Narwa and Wind Serpent Ibushi's destructive mating rituals, using their bodies to fuel its potent hellfire.
Appearance
Magnamalo appears to be a burly, tiger-like Fanged Wyvern clad in dark purple scutes, possessing a feline-like face with external ears. It possesses tan antlers sprouting from the front of its head, spear-like scales at the end of its tail, blade-like proportions on its elbows, as well as tan ridges on numerous parts of its body such as the forearms and back. It also possesses a red scuted underbelly and sharp scales on its back which unfold when it’s enraged. Magnamalo has numerous bright purple pores on several parts of its body which it uses to expel Hellfire gas. This Hellfire burns purple but can turn lighter pink if Magnamalo is enraged.
Scorned Magnamalo appears very similar to its base form except with several variations, noticeably its broken right antler, which ends in a purple-tinted stub, as well as the scar over its right eye. Its overall appearance is also more geared towards combat; its arm blades are serrated, its tail scales are sharper, its back scutes are spiky, and its fangs are much longer. Additionally, Scorned Magnamalo’s flames always burn a bright pink.
Biography
Magnamalo is known for appearing every fifty years in the Kamura Village during the Rampage, and it eats monsters during the Rampage. It is also highly feared by the village due to the fact that it almost destroyed the entire village fifty years ago. A specific Magnamalo, implied to be the first Scorned Magnamalo fought, is also responsible for ending Hamon’s hunting career fifty years ago after grievously wounding him.
It is also extremely hostile to both monsters and hunters, as it is shown attacking other monsters multiple times, such as Arzuros or Tobi-Kadachi, and carrying them with his jaws after attacking. Later in the game it even attacks Thunder Serpent Narwa's Allmother form.
It often attacks with his thin sharp tail by poking it quickly to either hunters or other monsters, it can use its tail to shoot purple fire that are known as "hellfire". It can also release purple gas that later explodes.
Magnamalo take great pride in their horns, seeing as they're indicators of their worthiness to breed. Once a Magnamalo's horn is damaged, it is no longer seen as fit to breed as the horn cannot regrow and thus, is estranged from its fellow kin, causing it to devolve into madness and hatred. Now known as a Scorned Magnamalo, these monsters are exceptionally aggressive and powerful compared to their kin, focusing on maintaining their territories and becoming stronger since mating is no longer a priority. They constantly generate hellfire at all times and will actively seek out and kill the most powerful monsters possible, though stronger Elder Dragons are capable of outmatching them.
Magnamalo also seems to be a strong monster, as it is even able to crash a flying Kushala Daora onto the ground. Its Scorned state is even more powerful, being able to evenly match Elder Dragons like Malzeno, though the latter is able to best it via its higher intellect.
Other Media
Super Smash Bros.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Magnamalo appears as one of the game's various spirits, introduced in the event named after the game it hails from. An Ace-level Attack-type spirit, it makes the user's fist-based attacks stronger on use. In its spirit battle, the player must fight against a giant Bowser on the underground section of Castle Siege in a stamina match, with the Bowser being quite fast from the start and gaining a boost to its attack power and defenses after some time passes.
Powers and Abilities
- Superhuman physical attributes: As the apex predator of the Shrine Ruins and other habitats, Magnamalo possesses physical attributes far beyond any human capacities in order to hunt efficiently. It is strong enough to send a hunter flying with a single swat of its tail, durable enough to shrug off several rounds of high-caliber explosives, resilient enough to continue fighting despite grievous injuries, and agile enough to cross mountain peaks in a single leap.
- Predatory prowess: Being a powerful and feared predator, Magnamalo possesses a fine control over its abilities, being able to masterfully chain pounces and attacks to bring down opponents. Its sheer ferocity also allows it to take down foes that would otherwise outmatch it in the power department, as seen from its fights with Bazelgeuse, a feared and mighty Flying Wyvern.
- Bone weapons: Magnamalo possesses numerous weapons that are made of bony extrusions from its skeleton: blades extending from its elbows, spines on its back, powerful fangs and a set of three sharp scales on its tail. The latter are incredibly sharp, being capable of dispatching a Tobi-Kadachi with a single strike.
- Hellfire manipulation: By fermenting the bone marrow of their prey, Magnamalo can produce a highly flammable purple gas which they expel from pores on their scutes. This gas can be ignited at will, producing a devastating explosion of purple flame, and can even be detonated remotely. Magnamalo can use this Hellfire both offensively and defensively, using the gas to enhance their attacks and agility, as well as to intimidate rivals and blast back enemies.
- Huge size: Measuring 22.76 meters in length at maximum, Magnamalo are able to boss around and intimidate smaller monsters with their sheer size alone, making them free of competition from all but the largest monsters.
- Longevity: While their lifespans are unknown, Magnamalos appear to live for extremely long periods of time. It’s implied that the Scorned individual first fought in-game was the one repelled by Hamon 50 years ago, and even today it appears to be in its prime.

Trivia
- The Magnamalo is unique on this wiki as the only non-Elder Dragon to be considered actively malicious. Despite this, some consideration may have to be taken into account on whether it actually possesses a moral compass like the other villainous monsters, as the descriptions of its villainy may be exaggerations by Kamura’s people.
- It is the only fifth generation flagship monster that is not an elder dragon.
