Kikimora

The Day of Unity approaches where we'll celebrate the purification of magic under the coven system, just as the Titan intended. As heads of the nine covens, we celebrate your efforts to complete this plan. For this, you have earned a glimpse of the reward that awaits.
~ Kikimora's speech to the Coven Heads as Emperor Belos shows them a vision of the Day of Unity.
So... the Golden Guard is also looking for Titan's Blood, and he took off to Eclipse Lake! Haha! I knew it! That little snake is always making me look bad. Well, now I can get my revenge!
~ Kikimora plotting revenge on the Golden Guard.
The days of Kikimora the Underling are over. I prefer partnership such as ours. We need to establish our rule now, for the well-being of future generations.
~ Kikimora explaining her and Boscha's new goals.

Kikimora is a major antagonist in the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House.

She is Emperor Belos's power-hungry and ruthless assistant, who's trying to become his right-hand by any means, including killing the Golden Guard. After the Collector took over the Boiling Isles, she helped Boscha rule over New Hexside under the guise of a teen named Miki, secretly planning to start her own empire now that Belos is gone.

She was voiced by Mela Lee.

Appearance

Body

Kikimora is a red-skinned demon of diminutive stature. She stands several heads shorter than her subordinates, with three-toed, talon-clad arms and legs similar to those of a bird's. Her talons are colored dark brown. Her left eye has yellow sclera and a brownish red iris; inversely, her right eye has red sclera and a yellow iris. Like many of the creatures of the Boiling Isles, her ears are pointed. Her mouth, hidden from view by her collar, features sharp yellowish teeth and a single upturned tusk.

Her most defining feature are the conjoined hands which make up her hair: one with fingers that form a fringe which hides her right eye from view, the other is clenched behind her head to form a bun/fist. It is shown in the second season intro that these hands are prehensile, and that the fingers can be used to cast spells, as first seen in "Eda's Requiem". The hands are dark blue with turquoise claws. "Clouds on the Horizon" shows that she has the sigil of the Emperor's Coven branded in her right wrist.

Clothing

Being a high-ranking affiliate of the Emperor's Coven, Kikimora wears robes reminiscent of Belos's regalia. These are a white tunic overtop a black ensemble, as well as a high-collared veil which shrouds the lower regions of her face. This veil is fastened by a triangular golden accessory. She typically walks barefoot.

Following her demotion, she wears a "Coven Crate" delivery uniform comprised of a yellow and white hat with the company's logo on it, a two-toned pale green veil with a paw at the end, a golden yellow short-sleeved shirt and brown shorts.

Under her guise as "Miki", her costume consists of a St. Epiderm abomination track uniform that hides most of her recognizable features. She wears a light pink wig with a ponytail that covers up her conjoined hands, as well as a pair of glasses to obscure her eyes. Unlike her usual attire, her mouth remains visible, showing an upturned tusk scarcely visible prior. She wears a dark blue cape over her arms, with a brown pauldron sitting atop her right shoulder. She is no longer barefoot, wearing gray boots. Upon revealing herself to Luz, she discards her wig and the glasses no longer cover her eyes.

In the epilogue, Kikimora wears a red scarf around her head as well as a gray shawl. She also wears khaki pants and a black belt.

Personality

Contrasting her small and diminutive stature, Kikimora is a conniving and arrogant demon who's completely obsessed with gaining more power. Enjoying to be domineering over her fellow coworkers, Kikimora is an exceptionally unpleasant person to work with, frequently dropping snide remarks on the flaws of others and flaunting her authority wherever possible, such as when she mocks Lilith for her failures to capture Eda and sarcastically wishes her luck in talking to Emperor Belos. Kikimora can also become extremely envious when others outshine her and as such, will do anything in her power to try and push them down to improve her image. One notable example of this is her one-sided rivalry with the Golden Guard, attempting to assassinate him numerous times and showing a worrying degree of paranoia at the possibility of his presence, all for the sake of currying Belos's favour. Furthermore, Kikimora's not scared of ratting out or betraying anyone if it helps her gain more power and she even shows a degree of sadism in doing so, seeming rather cheerful as she activated Raine's sigil, painfully knocking them out as well as when she betrayed Luz after the latter tried to help her get home without risking a demotion.

Despite this, it's implied that Kikimora's lust for power may come from a lack of control over her life, with her family and job both domineering over her in various aspects of her life and causing her to wish for a better grip on her life. However, this doesn't excuse her actions as she willingly chose to allow Belos to continue his plans to wipe out all life on the Isles in hopes of gaining more power, only turning her back on him after he expresses his indifference to her obedience to him. Likewise, even after the Isles are thrown into chaos by the Collector's escape Kikimora still continues vying for power by manipulating the insecure and power-hungry Boscha as her right hand woman, displaying that at core, Kikimora has discarded her morals in favour of a lust for power.

Biography

She first appeared at the end of "Covention", where she reports to Lilith about her mission to capture Eda for the Emperor.

She later appeared in "Agony of a Witch", where she gives tours of the emperor's castle to the students of Hexside and later mocks Lilith for failing to capture Eda.

She then appeared in "Young Blood, Old Souls", where she prepares to turn Eda to stone by order of the Emperor and gets furious with Warden Wrath for letting Luz get past him. She is about to turn Eda to stone but lets her go along with Lilith and King after Luz threatens her with a fire spell. At the end of the episode, she promises Emperor Belos that they will capture Eda, but Belos states that he's already got that planned then turns her attention to the portal to the human realm which Belos' is rebuilding.

Her next appearance was in "Hunting Palisman," in which she served as the episode's main antagonist. In it, she is seen eavesdropping a conversation between the Golden Guard and Emperor Belos, making her envious of the Golden Guard's attention, which leads her to later take advantage of his airship crashing and faking his death, tasking her dragon to find his remains later. Later, Kikimora is injured, and her vision becomes blurry as she attempts to kill two people, of whom unbeknownst to her were Luz and the Golden Guard. The Guard later returns to the Emperor's Castle, which leaves Kikimora furious.

Her next appearance was in "Eclipse Lake", where Belos sent her to the Knee to collect Titans's Blood for the portal key. However, while at the knee, Kikimora is driven by paranoia that the Golden Guard is trying to get the Titan's blood for Belos and wants revenge on him. After the guard double cross Amity, Kikimora and the Coven Scouts arrived and left her to be watched by the Coven Captain while she and the guards ride down the mineshafts on the Abomaton 2.0s. Unfortunately, Kikimora met her downfall when she and the scouts crash going down the mine shaft to Eclipse Lake. Near the end of the episode, it is revealed that Eclipse Lake had dried up, meaning Kikimora would've failed to get the Titan's Blood either way.

Her next appearance is in the episode "Follies at the Coven Day Parade", where at the beginning, she is speaking to her family on the phone and talking about how she'd like to visit them but feels like she has to attend the annual Coven Day Parade, and therefore, can't make it. However, Luz overhears this, and despite their previous interactions, she sympathizes with her since her situation is similar to her own and offers to help her by staging a fake kidnapping of her and Raine during the parade (the latter so she can reunite them with Eda). During the parade, Luz successfully "kidnaps" her while King and Hooty distract the guards. However, Terra Snapdragon, the leader of the Plant Coven, goes after them and entices her by deliberately mentioning in earshot of them that she was finally going to receive her long-coveted promotion. They manage to escape from her with help from Amity, but then just as they're seeing her off at the docks so she can visit her family in Palm Stings, Kikimora turns on them as a result of wanting to receive her promotion. However, just after she gets into a battle with Luz and Amity, she is tied down by Terra, since hurting them and causing a riot contradicts Emperor Belos' plans. She then reveals the whole thing was a test to prove her loyalty and that she passed, but also reveals the "promotion" was simply getting to live before dragging her back to the parade. She is then present while Belos makes an announcement about the Day of Unity at the end of parade, though with a somber look on her face, indicating she may be contemplating if she made the right decision.

In "Clouds on the Horizon", it's revealed that Kikimora has been demoted to a cargo pilot. She later receives an Abomatron mech from Odalia Blight and uses it against Luz and her friends, during which she reveals Belos was aware of the resistance's plan to stop the Draining Spell and had counter measures in place. During the fight, she believes she had captured Hunter, but it was actually Luz disguised by Gus's illusion.

In "King's Tide", she delivers Luz to Belos, believing it was Hunter. She then ask if this act was worthy of returning her to her original post, or becoming Belos's right-hand. However, Belos tells her he would rather suffer than do that and tells her to find a hole to rot in, much to her sadness. When the Draining Spell finally activates, Kikimora is drained like everybody else. When Luz brands Belos, hoping he would stop the spell, he violently attacks her and her friends. King is pushed down some stairs where he finds Kikimora, who informs him that Belos can't stop the spell, and only The Collector has that power. She describes the being as a "child from the stars", and that she knew the emperor was afraid of him and only spoke to him when he believed he was alone, only for Kikimora to overhear their conversations. She then takes King to the pit Belos from The Collector's tablet down, hoping to get back at him. She then watches King free The Collector, who then seemingly kills Belos and stops the spell.

She's seen at the beginning of "For the Future", climbing out of the remains of the Titan's skull and watching in horror as The Collector begins his rampage against the Boiling Isles. At some point during the time-skip, she arrives at Hexside under the alias "Miki", also disguising her mech as her sister "Roka", posing as refugees. During her stay, she approached Boscha, who was emotionally vulnerable due to her grudgeby team getting captured by The Collector's minions, and manipulated her into taking over the school, with Kikimora acting as her advisor. Kikimora's goal was to use Boscha as a puppet ruler to control the survivors and make Hexside into her own personal empire, similar to how Belos did with the Isles in the past. When Luz, Amity, Willow, Gus, Hunter and Camila arrive to convince the students to fight back against the Collector, "Miki" convinces Boscha to deny their request due to it being "a suicide mission".

She and Boscha later ambush them and Matt Tholomule when they were attempting to research a teleportation glyph, knocking them all out with sleeping nettle, with Kikimora revealing her true identity at the same time. She then throws them into the detention pit and attempts to kill Luz in sadistic pleasure, leading to a fight that causes the Hexsquad to be split up, with Kikimora pursuing Luz and Camila into the surrounding woods. She finds them after Luz finally manages to connect with and awaken her palisman, fighting and cornering the Hexsquad with murderous intent, during which she declares her intent to kill Boscha and rule her "new empire" herself. At that moment, however, Boscha, having been convinced by Amity to help them to save her friends, arrives with the rest of the students and attacks Kikimora, giving the Hexsquad time to draw the teleportation glyph to reach the Titan's skull. Kikimora breaks free and tries to blast the heroes in a last-ditch effort to kill them, only for them to teleport to the skull at the last minute.

It's unknown what happened to her in the immediate aftermath, but she is seen in the epilogue of "Watching and Dreaming" helping build a new museum wing for the Boiling Isles' library under Mattholomule's supervision, meaning she was likely overthrown and forced to help in the rebuilding of the Boiling Isles as punishment for her actions.

Trivia

  • Kikimoras are house spirits from Slavic folklore that can be beneficial or harmful depending on how they feel about you. This could be a reference to how Kikimora acts affable to others so long as they're useful to her, quickly revealing her selfish and cruel side once she's done her business with them.
  • She has some similarities to Ixpuxtequi, a demon with bird legs and no jaw, in the Nahua's mythology, which also shares the same region from which the Owl Lady myth also comes from. This likely influenced some of her design quirks, such as possessing bird-like limbs and having her mouth nearly constantly hidden by her coat collar.
  • Her parents live in a town called Palm Stings, likely a pun referencing Palm Springs, California.
  • Some fans thought she didn't have a mouth, but it was revealed to just be covered by her uniform and later her scarf.
  • Kikimora being demoted into becoming a cargo driver is likely a joke referencing the Studio Ghilbi movie Kiki's Delivery Service, as Kikimora (or Kiki for short) now works for the delivery service Coven Crate.
  • In the Requiem Café panel, it was mentioned that Kikimora is a distant relative of Osran, the Oracle Coven Head which is how she got her job via nepotism despite evidently being rather incompetent. This relation can be noted by how both Kikimora and Osran have dark sclera in at least one eye and hair composed of finger-like appendages, indicating that they're at least the same species.
