~ Ghis |
“ | Such a great shame. I must confess: I thought you the one who would help us restore peace to Dalmasca. No matter. We hold the proof of your royal lineage. A maid of passing resemblance will serve our purposes now. As for you, my dear... the Empire requires you no more! | „ |
~ Ghis preparing to dispose of Ashe and her friends. |
Judge Ghis is a minor antagonist in Final Fantasy XII. He is one of the five Judge Magisters of the Archadian Empire.
He was voiced by Ryūsuke Ōbayashi in Japanese and Mark Wing-Davey in English, the former of whom also voiced Ben Wooder and Rakan Dahkaran in Gundam while the later also voiced Zaphod Beeblebrox in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Biography
At some point in the past, Ghis became a Judge Magister for the Archadian Empire, the highest position in the Empire's army. He was tasked to capture Princess Ashelia of Dalmasca. He is the officiant of the 13th Bureau and leads the 8th Fleet led by his airship, the Dreadnought Leviathan.
Ghis and his men first appear in the Garamsythe Waterway to capture Ashe after she joins Vaan's team under the alias Amalia, although Ghis easily identifies her despite her having no proof of her lineage. Vaan, Fran, and Balthier are defeated and sent to the Nalbina Dungeons while Ghis has Ashe taken away the Leviathan. Later, he is seen observing the Lhusu Mines where the Empire obtains its quality of magicite. As Ghis is taunting Marquis Ondore about being used as the "lapdog" for Archadia, he encounters Penelo and deems her an intruder. Before he can kill her for knowing too much, Larsa Solidor convinces him to spare her. Ghis is outraged as to why an outsider was company to the potential heir, but Larsa's distraction allows Penelo to escape to Ondore's mansion.
Later, Vaan and the party are aided by Ondore to sneak onto the Leviathan to rescue Ashe. Upon confronting Ghis, he reveals Ashe to be the princess of Dalmasca. Ghis then discovers that Vaan holds the Dusk Shard, a piece of deifacted nethicite, making him prove Ashe's real lineage. Vaan reluctantly hands the Dusk Shard over to Ghis as an exchange for their lives, but Ghis instead takes the party away to the brig to execute them. Fortunately, they are rescued by Penelo and Larsa, whilst also freeing Ashe.
As they try to escape the Leviathan, Ghis ambushes the party at the hanger and remarks that now that he has the Dusk Shard, he requires Ashe no more and unleashes a powerful spell that is absorbed by Penelo's piece of manufactured nethicite. Upon defeating Ghis, the party escape on an Atomos. After his defeat, Ghis sends the Dusk Shard to Dr. Cid at Draklor Laboratory.
After the party obtains the Dawn Shard from the Tomb of Raithwall, Vossler betrays the group and has the Empire capture them, with the party shocked that the Leviathan can fly on the jagd due to the technology of the Empire's manufactured nethicite. On the Leviathan, Ghis confiscates the Dawn Shard and seeks to test its power compared to the other nethicite by adding it to his ship's engine, revealing his plan to take the crown of Archadia from Vayne. However, the Dawn Shard instead proves itself too powerful and overloads the Leviathan, resulting in a massive explosion that obliterates Ghis and his entire fleet.
Personality
Ghis is an arrogant judge who sees himself as the best in all of his fields. He appears to be blinded by his own greedy temptations, as shown by him blindly adding the Dawn Shard to the Leviathan engine to test its results without any caution of the aftermath, resulting in his death.
