“ | Because I want wretched creatures who ask such meaningless questions to die! You! And you! And you! I want you all to die! And I want to die too! Oh yes, I want to die and take everyone with me in a paroxysm of pain and suffering! I'm different, you see. From the ancients who clung to dear life. And from you. So don't bother trying to reason with me. You will find I have no reason. Or creed. Or any such tripe. I just want to destroy the world. But please do resist with all your might. It will add to my enjoyment. | „ |
~ Fandaniel |
Hermes, also known as Fandaniel, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Meteion) of the 2013 massively multiplayer online role-playing high fantasy video game Final Fantasy XIV, appearing as a major antagonist in the 2019 DLC expansion pack Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers and the overarching antagonist of the 2021 DLC expansion pack Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker.
He is a rogue Ascian that disagreed with the Unsundered's plan for Rejoining, as he did not see himself as a reincarnated Ancient but rather as Amon, the court wizard of the Allagan Empire he was reborn as. Blaming the other Ascians for the end of the world and having come to believe that death makes all things meaningless, Fandaniel instead allied himself with Zenos yae Galvus in order to summon the Final Days once more to avenge the Empire by destorying all life, spiting his brethren. His original incarnation as Hermes was also responsible for the creation of Meteion, meaning he is the ultimate cause of the story of Final Fantasy XIV.
Appearance
Possessing the body of Asahi sas Brutus as his vessel, Fandaniel appears as a young pale Hyur with short black hair. The white and red tattered robes he wears while assuming his host's identity are dyed versions of the healing set of Facet gear, which are alternate versions of the Diabolic gear available at Dun Scaith, uniquely wearing the Marid Hood of Scouting. Following Lunar Bahamut's appearance and demise, Fandaniel begins wearing the Cryptlurker's casting set dyed maroon, a modified version of the Healing hood with the mask removed. As is common with Ascians, Fandaniel can conjure a unique red emblem in front of his face.
Personality
Fandaniel is flamboyant, whimsical, and impulsive. Unlike the other Ascians, Fandaniel is not loyal to Zodiark and states no interest in restoring the world as it was before the sundering.
In fact, his goal of annihilating the Source puts him at direct odds with the rest of his brethren. Fandaniel appears loyal, if not sycophantic, toward Zenos, and is eager to help the Garlean prince in his "hunt" for the Warrior of Light as it correlates to his desire to spread chaos.
An erratic and sadistic nihilist with a flare for theatrics, Fandaniel wishes nothing more than for all of the inhabitants of the Source to perish and is more than willing to die in the effort. In fact, it is his goal to die once he achieves in his mission in restarting the Final Days, a stark contrast to how his fellow Ascians who cling to life. When confronted, he reveals that this is because like the Allagan Emperor Xande, Fandaniel believes that death and entropy render all achievements in life meaningless, and thus the destruction of all things is the only true permanent proof of existence - and more so, that it would avenge the Allagan Empire's fall in the Fourth Umbral Calamity, which was engineered by the Ascians.
