Levels are a system of measurement that can be used to determine a person's strength. It was created by Root along with the Adventurer's Guild.
Overview
To put it simply, how strong a person is depends on their level, but it is not an absolute representation although most don't know it.
The average adventurer has a level anywhere between 50 and 200, whereas greater creatures, such as Tomoe and Mio, are well over 1000. The highest measurable level is 65,535. It's the highest value in 16 bit computing.
According to Root, the term levels was actually brought to the Goddess' World from Earth by his master, someone who had been summoned from there (and for some reason ended up a thousand years in the past), borrowing the word from video games. Root would integrate levels by intervening in the world’s system so that the power absorption gained from others is increased though, like increasing the experience gain.
Increasing levels makes your base power rise, but doesn't really represent your true ability, talent or experience. The true purpose of the Levels system was to maintain balance; under the blessings of the Goddess, Hyumans grew numerous and arrogant, and therefore had to be culled. The existence of levels encouraged people to want to see there level go up, and to that end they put themselves in danger.
The tool used to measure a persons magic level is a rolled up scroll. When the person holding it channels their magic into it, the scroll will droop and change color. The color it changes to, how much of the scroll that changes color and how much it droops are all factors that can be used to measure the precise level of the holder.
Trivia
- Even though everybody in the Goddess's World accepts that a person's strength is estimated by their level as common sense, Makoto is the one person who is an exception to this rule, as he is measured at only being level 1.
