Magic

Brid

Magic (魔法 Mahō) is a fundamental force in the Goddess' World that individuals can harness to produce various effects.

Overview

The magic system includes various types of spells, each with specific effects ranging from offensive to defensive and utility-based abilities. Magic users often undergo training to improve their skills and learn new spells, contributing significantly to both combat and everyday life.

Even basic magic requires the use of Mana or Magic Power (魔力 Maryoku), that exists inside the user's body as well as the land itself. The more it is used, the more Mana is consumed, and powerful spells typically require more Mana, which can impact a mage’s ability to use them frequently. Each mage has a Mana pool that determines how much magic they can perform before needing to rest or recharge with special potions or magical items. Reaching the limits can lead to fatigue, fainting, vomiting and if completely exhausted, even death.

Normally, there is a maximum limit to one's magical potential. Once a mage reaches their zenith, they cannot go any higher, no matter what they do. However, a mage's Mana becomes significantly more powerful when they are in a state of significant danger, allowing them to achieve a power unlike any other. Additionally, in the miraculous case that someone dies and is reborn, then their Mana will increase significantly. This phenomenon does not require actual death, it can be achieved by simulating the circumstances of death: releasing your sense of self and becoming one with your surroundings. It can also be done repeatedly.

Incantations, gestures and magical artifacts such as wands and staves can enhance or facilitate the use of magic. Even so, the strength of the magic heavily depends of the user's level, Mana reserves and aptitude. Even the weakest spell can be quite powerful when performed by a mage with advenced skills or superior Mana. For example, even if two people cast the same magic spell, the spell used by the person with the higher level will be stronger, bigger and/or affect a larger area.

Arias

The language and words used in Arias or Chants (詠唱, Eishō) significantly impact the effectiveness, power, and precision of spells. Specific and well-chosen words result in more precise and powerful spells. If the wording is unclear or vague, the spell may not work as intended or could be weaker than expected.

The length and complexity of the Aria often correlate with the spell's power. The more powerful or complex a spell is, the longer the Aria tends to be. More experienced magic users can shorten their Arias or even eliminate them entirely. To do an Aria without letting your voice out is called "Voiceless Aria" and tend reduce the original power of the magic.

Certain languages are more attuned to magic than others. For example, ancient or lost languages often have a deeper connection to the world’s magical system, allowing for more powerful or specialized spells. The known existing magical languages are:

  • Common Chant: The easiest and most widely used.
  • Noble Chant and Graph Chant: Superior versions of the Common Chant. Noble Chant is mainly used for attacks, while the Graph Chant is all-purpose.
  • Veard Chant: A strong chant that Hyumans no longer use due to its complexity.
  • Forka Chant: A forbidden chant with a power closer to the Veard Chant with the difficulty of the Common Chant.
  • Lost Chant: The more ancient and powerful magical language, lost in time since it consumes a lot of Mana despite it shortness, preventing consistent use. Some races like Highland Orcs use a refined version of this chant, which is weaker but less Mana-taxing. Thanks to his "mastery of words", Makoto created an even more refined version of this chant, with its power coming close to its original version.

Arias employed by Hyumans tend to include a laudation to the Goddess as a way to secure the power of her blessing.

Magic Types

Elemental Magic

There are seven different elements that can be conjured and manipulated with magic. These elements are:

  • Water
  • Fire
  • Earth
  • Wind
  • Thunder
  • Darkness
  • Healing

Different people have different magical affinities. For example, Makoto excels in Water Magic, but is much weaker in Thunder Magic, and completely incapable of performing Wind or Healing Magic.

Makoto has also developed a new element that only he has been known to use, Moon Magic.

Brid (ブリット, Buritto) is a basic application of elemental magic, in which the elements is shaped into a floating ball which can be reshaped and/or utilized in various ways.

Harnessing the power of elemental Spirits can assist in the use of elemental magic.

Other Magic

Aside for the basic elements, there are a number of different ways that Magic can be used.

  • Levitation: A simple day-to-day magic that can be used to make things float and move around.
  • Memory Manipulation Magic: A magical ability that allows the user search through another person's memories, as well as copy those record and store those memories for later viewing
  • Illusion Magic: Creates illusions to deceive the senses, such as making objects or creatures appear or disappear.
  • Dark Magic: Often associated with curses, necromancy, and other malevolent effects. It's typically more dangerous and requires careful handling.
  • Barrier Magic: Used to create protective shields or barriers to defend against attacks or obstacles. This type of magic can also be used to create spatial barriers or traps.
  • Support Magic: Includes spells that enhance the abilities of the user or their allied, as well as provide various types of buffs, like increasing strength, agility, or other attributes. Unlike Healing, strengthening spells cannot be combined since the stronger spell ends up overriding the other.
  • Summoning: Allows mages to call forth and control magical creatures or entities from other realms. These summoned beings can assist in battles or perform specific tasks.
  • Teleportation: Allows the caster to instantly travel from one location to another, bypassing physical barriers.
  • Telepathy: Allows to communicate directly through thoughts.

Skill Type

Skills (スキル, Sukiru) are a series of techniques that do not require casting Arias, but just gathering Mana and an activation phrase. They divide into combat skills used for battle and production skills used for specific jobs like craftmanship. They can be learned by rising your Level, with specific skills being unlocked by joining the required Guild.
