History
Background
At some point Awaji trained to become a ninja and mastered many ninjutsu and fighting techniques. He also joined up with Tsuruhime, Yasuke and Hakase to form the Cosmo Samurai, a vigilante group that travel through space aboard their ship the Cosmo to keep the system safe from space pirates and other extraterrestrial threats.[1]
Cosmo Samurai
In episode 1, Awaji and the Cosmo Samurai rescued the heavily damaged TOM from deep space after his escape pod exploded.[1] After meeting TOM and realizing they share a common enemy, TOM joins the Cosmo Samurai in their quest to defeat the Akutou.[3] In episode 3, Awaji showcases his mastery of fighting with shuriken and a jutsu called Fire Style: Flame Dance, which allows him to breathe fire, destroying large groups of robots aboard the Akutou mothership. When the Cosmo Samurai reach the command center of the mothership Awaji launches another jutsu called Fire Style: Pyroclastic Surge at the Akutou Mid Boss but it can't pierce his barrier. With the Akutou mothership defense guns activated Awaji uses Earth Style: Mountain Wall, a jutsu that summons a large wall of Earth, to protect the Cosmo Samurai.[4]
In episode 4, after Tsuruhime defeats the Mid Boss, his eye drone activates and fires at her. Awaji sees this and jumps in front of Tsuruhime, taking the bullets meant for her. Awaji seemingly dies, much to his friends despair. However, he quickly reveals that he was just joking as this body was actually just a clone and he was safely hanging from the ceiling the entire time. At this point the actual Boss of the Akutou reveals himself and mocks the Cosmo Samurai, revealing the Mid Boss was merely a pawn in his organization. TOM then makes a declaration that they’re coming for him next.[2]

As a ninja, he has mastered many ninjutsu techniques and the art of shuriken.[1] He has demonstrated the ability to use Fire based jutsu, Earth based jutsu and clone jutsu techniques.[4]

Trivia
- Awaji's Fire based jutsu are similar to the jutsu used by many characters in the anime Naruto and its sequel Naruto Shippuden. Awaji's ninja motif itself could also possibly be an homage to the aforementioned anime.
