How does Waffle's appearance compare to a real blue jay?
Appearance
Waffle is a bird-shaped palisman similar to a blue jay, with blue feathers with light blue and dark wingtips, a gray beak and feet, yellow eyes, and a light blue face with ornate dark stripes. It is unknown what her interlock looks like.
In staff form, Waffle's eyes remain open, her facial markings become simplified and angular, and her wings point downward. Her staff is dark brown, and her legs form into a pale blue convex wooden shape with a thick yellow ring at the bottom joining it to the staff. Unlike other winged palismen, Waffle's wings are not shown to spread when flying as a staff.
Background
Hunter received Waffle at an unspecified time during the four-year time gap after the defeat of Emperor Belos. Waffle is the successor to Hunter's previous palisman, Flapjack, who died in "Thanks to Them".
After Hunter carves a palisman for Braxas, Willow arrives to get Hunter and Waffle for Luz's belated quinceañera. After stopping by Flapjack's grave, she flies Hunter around the Isles, gathering the others.[3]
Relationships
Hunter
Waffle is Hunter's second palisman, after the loss of his former palisman Flapjack. Not much is known about their relationship, but given that she is his bonded palisman, they are likely very close. She is shown staying at Hunter's side as he carves palismen for others, as well as flying him around.
Powers and abilities
- Attachment and detachment: As a palisman, Waffle has the ability to conjure and attach to staff and detach and function as a conscious entity.
- Flight: Waffle is able to fly both in and out of staff form.

Behind the scenes
Name and basis
The term "Waffle" comes from a small crisp batter cake, baked in a waffle iron and eaten hot with butter or syrup. Her name seems to be a homage to Flapjack, also named after batter cake-based food like pancakes.
Debut
Waffle made her debut and only appearance in "Watching and Dreaming".

Trivia
- Dana Terrace considers Waffle to be like Flapjack's little sister.[4]
- She is the final named character to be introduced in the series.
- Although she is based on a blue jay, her possession of blue feathers is inaccurate to real-life blue jays, where the bright coloring is only typical in males. Female blue jays have a muted coat with only a trace of blue found on their crest feathers.
