Otabin is a children's book on the Boiling Isles. It is the story about a bookmaker named Otabin, who learns to make friends.
Background
Otabin is a very simple story that teaches the value of friendship, and its target demographic is young witches in the baby class. Amity Blight has read this book ever since she was a child, and continues to read this book to the children at the Bonesborough Library. Eda Clawthorne also owns a copy of this book, which she used (along with apple slices) to calm the Bat Queen's children.
In "Lost in Language," the Wailing Star brought life to Otabin. Edric Blight helped Luz draw claws and angry eyebrows on the titular character, warping Otabin into a giant, menacing monster who now wished to sew anyone he saw into his books. The monstrous Otabin terrorized both Luz and Amity in the library as he attempted to sew them into the pages of a giant, blank book. Luz soon defeated Otabin by using an eraser that Amity summoned to undo the drawing, reverting the fictional character back to his original self.
Characters
- Otabin: The eponymous protagonist and bookmaker who spent many lonely nights mending the books he'd sewn. He longs for a friend and ends up making a book of friendship while surrounded by new friends. He is also serves as the unwitting antagonist of "Lost in Language" when he is doodled on by Edric and Luz.
- Tin Boy: One of Otabin's first friends, he said with a yelp that he wanted to help.
- Chicken Witch: One of Otabin's first friends, the chicken witch is notable for clucking and for declaring to be one of the bookmaker's friends.
