Burns can commonly be caused by standing or walking over a lit Campfire, walking into electrified wires during an Aurora. Suffering from Burns immediately lowers the player's Condition to 75% if it was over 75%, and prevents Condition from being healed above 75% while in effect.
The player can only suffer from 1 instance of the Burns affliction, having the appropriate affliction image from the damage source (fire for fire burns, electric bolt for electrical burns). Each instance of Burns must be treated before Condition recovers over 75%. Acquiring more Burns will not produce a separate Affliction to treat (ex. Blood Loss), despite more Burns appearing on the screen.
Affliction
At present, there are 5 ways to acquire Burns in the game:
- Walking into open fires (ex. Campfires, any large burning fires found in certain episodes of Wintermute)
- Walking into energized electrical wires around industrial areas during an Aurora.
- Walking into electrified water during an Aurora. (Cinder Hills Coal Mine middle level)
- Holding a Noisemaker until it explodes or having them explode too close to the player.
Pressurized steam from the exploded pipes in the Steam Tunnels in Episode 4: Fury, then Silence does not give Burns but Will Mackenzie will behave as though it will. Instead, the steam from the pipes lowers Condition.
Without treatment Burns will heal after 30 hours, but can be Treated and removed immediately for one Bandage and two Painkillers/one cup of Rose Hip Tea.
Strategies to avoid Burns
- Campfires, downed wires, and electrified water also cause heavy and constant Condition loss as long as they are touched, resulting in swift death.
- Downed wires on the ground or hanging from above should be avoided during dusk and night, even if an Aurora is not currently active, since an Aurora could start while the player is standing atop them and die before being able to walk to safety.
- Notable locations with downed wires and electrified water include the interior of the Carter Hydro Dam, Maintenance Yard, and Cinder Hills Coal Mine's "middle" level (accessed via elevator from Coastal Highway during an Aurora).
- Care should be taken when in an area with downed wires and Wolves (namely the Cannery Workshop), as they can pin the player on a wire. In scenarios such as this, death from Condition loss occurs in less than a second, even at maximum health.
