The Boomerang (ブーメラン, Boomerang) is a throwing item in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It allows the user to throw the namesake item at opponents.
Overview
The user can change the direction the Boomerang is thrown in by holding a direction on the control stick before throwing it. After the Boomerang hits a solid surface, hits an opponent, or reaches a maximum distance after making no contact, it will return to its thrower and automatically be caught. If thrown at the ground however, it will drop, making it open for anyone to grab it. The Boomerang can be thrown a maximum of seven times before disappearing.
For each successive use, the Boomerang deals more damage by adding two points of damage for throwing it and one point coming back. This multiplier will occur even if the Boomerang does not make contact with an opponent, and thus only reset when dropped.
The Boomerang is a potent item due to its range, and its ability to come back and deal low knockback makes it an ideal item for setting up combos. However, it can be caught by opponents, so caution should be used when throwing it.
Trophy Description
Boomerang
Boomerang Mario would use this item to collect faraway items and defeat distant enemies. In Smash Bros., it can be thrown up, down, left, or right. If you throw it, you can catch it again on the return trip. The boomerang gains power with each throw, so try to keep catching it!
- 3DS - Super Mario 3D Land (11/2011)
Tip

When you catch the Boomerang at the right time, it will deal more damage the next time used.
Origin
The Boomerang item originates from Super Mario 3D Land. After absorbing a Boomerang Flower, Mario or Luigi would be able to throw Boomerangs to hit distant enemies, collect items, or break open crates, though they can only throw one at a time.
