The Warp Star (ワープスター wāpu sutā?) is an item appearing in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Kirby symbol also has a similar depiction to the Warp Star.
Overview
When used, the player flies off into the sky and crashing back down into the stage when picked up. It is possible to control the landing location by pressing left and right on the Control Stick. Because of this, it's possible to miss the stage and self-destruct. If a character is hit hard when the Warp Star is first grabbed, the item can be "dropped" before it can be used. The Warp Star can then be grabbed and used normally. A shield will not protect against the star's impact, except for Yoshi's shield, so the only way to avoid damage is to not get struck. A factor that most people forget is that the player is invincible while "on" the Warp Star. Since Warp Stars crash into the stage from above, they can be used to "leap" to a higher part of the stage. Therefore, stages with many platforms can limit its effectiveness (and, in the case of scrolling stages with high off-screen platforms such as Rainbow Cruise or Rumble Falls, can even cause an SD).
If a player uses the Warp Star and runs into Jigglypuff's Final Smash, on the way up, they will still receive knockback from the attack.
Origin
Warp Stars, sometimes spelled Warpstars, serve as one of the primary modes of transportation in the Kirby series. They have appeared in nearly every Kirby game since their first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land. During gameplay, they are used to carry Kirby and/or other characters from one section of a stage to another, or provide transport in-between stages or levels. Warp Stars can also appear in cut-scenes, and are often paired with Kirby in promotional material and merchandise.
Warp Stars can vary greatly in their depiction, including details regarding their shape, size, color, and the sound they emit when being ridden. How Kirby mounts a Warp Star can also vary. Typically he will grab onto the top or side of it as it is kept upright, but Kirby can also often be seen sitting or standing atop the star as it lays flat. Despite being ubiquitous to the series, it is still not entirely clear what a Warp Star is, where it comes from, and why it typically appears for Kirby to utilize.
The Warp Star serves a special purpose in the anime series, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. It specifically belongs to Kirby, and was originally kept inside a small case similar to a piece of jewelry; able to increase drastically in size when needed. In the series finale, Kirby inhales the Warp Star in order to gain the Star Rod and defeat Nightmare.
However, due to Kirby's general negligence and the ease of such an item being stolen, it was placed inside Kabu's sanctuary for safekeeping until called upon during times of need. When called, it will fly off toward Kirby, allowing him to mount it and gain an advantage from the air, returning to Kabu when it is no longer needed.
The Warp Star is also likely the source of Kirby's power, and can rejuvenate him when he sees it. (In the first episode, upon seeing the Warp Star, Kirby regains his healthy pink hue after being injured). The Warp Star will come whenever someone who truly cares for Kirby calls for it; with that specific person in the show being Tiff.
It is shown that the Warp Star can take damage if hit hard enough. In this event, Kirby can take the Warp Star back to Kabu's sanctuary, where it can be slowly repaired if placed inside its pedestal. While it is damaged, it will flash green on a regular basis.
Appearances
Super Smash Bros. Melee
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Warp Star could travel farther left or right. It also causes 22 percent explosion damage.
There is a glitch that can occur when a player uses a Warp Star: If the player tries to pick up a Warp Star just as an opponent attacks the player, the Warp Star will attach itself to the player. When thrown, it will then fly off the stage.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Warp Star's ability to travel left and right before landing has been diminished. It also does slightly higher explosion damage of 24 percent.
A Warp Star also appears in a cutscene of Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, where Kirby and Peach/Zelda use it to escape the Midair Stadium right before it is swallowed by Subspace. However, they are chased by the Halberd, and are forced to land on it.
If one pauses the battle at the right moment as they go off-screen, they can see most of the stage to the point of seeing it beyond the stage's boundaries.
If the item is used on the Shadow Moses Island stage while a full wall is up, the player can pass over it, where they remain stuck until they either self destruct or the wall is destroyed.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

The appearance of the Warp Star in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is based on its appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but using it now plays a sound effect from the actual sound that it makes in the Kirby franchise.
In earlier versions of the game, a glitch could occur when using a Warp Star, in which the game thought the Warp Star was a platform going over the upper blast line, KO'ing the user.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kirby uses a Warp Star to escape Galeem's attack in the opening cutscene of Adventure Mode: World of Light.
