Hello stalker. How would you like to earn some cash and help out our camp at the same time?
― Grouse
Grouse (Ru. Глухарь) is a Loner stalker appearing in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.
Background
Grouse used to work as a police detective before coming to the Zone. He was one of the first people to arrive in Zaton alongside Beard, after the Brain Scorcher was shut down. Grouse eventually chose to stay around, becoming the Skadovsk's self-designated sheriff[quote. 1].
Shortly before the events of the game begin, Grouse started investigating the suspicious disappearance of stalkers in the area. When the local medic, Tremor, confirmed that bloodsuckers were responsible for the deaths, he hired a hunter, Danila, to find the bloodsuckers' lair[quote. 2].
Appearances
Call of Pripyat
Grouse initially resides in the Skadvosk, where he offers the player to help him in his investigation. One may also alert him of Sultan's impending raid on the stalkers in the Shevchenko, which will prompt him to warn Spartacus. He may also provide Snag's potential whereabouts if the player is looking for him.
Accepting Grouse's offer will later have the player meet him in the vicinity of the Krug antenna complex, where he suspects the bloodsucker lair is hidden. While investigating the basement with the player, Grouse confirms his suspicions as he discovers a large number of sleeping mutants within the complex. After escaping the lair, Grouse tells the player to warn Beard and the stalkers about the bloodsuckers, while he attempts to find Danila.
Afterwards, Grouse disappears from the premises. Eventually, the player receives a clue from Beard that Grouse is waiting for them at the nearby Dock cranes. There, the player can find Grouse's body in a shack alongside Tremor, who confesses being the mastermind behind the disappearance of stalkers, and killing Grouse when he grew suspicious and came after him.

Trivia
- In the Russian version of the game, Grouse is known as "Глухарь", which translates to capercaillie. In the English localization of the game however, this name was rejected for a simple transliteration of the name (Glouchar). For this reason some guides/forums refer to him as Glouchar. The developers eventually chose to go for a similar bird more commonly known in the West and settled for Grouse.
- A bug occurs when the player sleeps before accepting the mission in which Grouse turns hostile. This will not affect the bloodsucker lair mission. He will, however, open fire at the player as soon as he exits the drainage pipe leading to the swamp. Grouse will remain hostile until killed.
- Grouse may be a reference to the main character of the Russian TV series Glukhar (Grouse's name in the Russian version of the game) which aired on Russian television in 2008-2011; the protagonist of this series is also a police investigator.
- In Russian criminal police's slang, "глухарь" means a crime that is very difficult to solve or remains unsolved[1][2].

Grouse: "I serve and protect. Used to be a police detective and here I'm sort of the local sheriff. I came here with Beard, then he decided to set up camp. Why go any deeper if no one knows the road to Pripyat anyway? There's plenty of artifacts here as it is. So we stayed."

Grouse: "Several stalkers have gone missing. No one has heard anything about them, but just the other day they found one body. No signs of violence, but it was bled completely dry. Tremor searched the body, he could give you more details... Anyway, it's got to be bloodsuckers! I talked to Danila the hunter and he went off to search for their lair."
