Richter (Ukr: Ріхтер) is a Loner appearing in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.

Background

Richter became one of the youngest stalkers in the Zone shortly after escaping his foster home around 2011/2012, where he spent years exploring the "safer" sections of the Zone.[1][2] He became guide welcomed in most bars and camps by others, and notably worked with STC Malachite and SIRCAA, serving as a guide[3] and field consultant[4] respectively. He was one of the few stalkers who know the members of Noontide well.[5]

At one point, he had a deal with Degtyarev likely allowing him to guide stalkers to Prypiat.[6] This lead to the fateful day where Richter guiding two stalkers[note 1], Joker and Barge, to or around the city.[7] Something happened, resulting in the stalker's deaths but sparing Richter's life. Their deaths deeply traumatized him, destroying his confidence in guiding and making him terrified of someone trusting him and getting hurt/killed.[8][9] He resigned from guiding but chose to continue living in the Zone, as his love for it stopped him from leaving.

Later on, Richter became recruiter of-sorts due to his impressive number of connections he gained while guiding. He tracks down stalkers for clients, and can even arrange meetings between interested parties.[10][11] Right before the start of Heart of Chornobyl, he, along with Squint, Gloomy, and Zhorik began helping Spark in their rebellion against the Ward.

Richter firmly believes in the beauty of the Zone, and sees it as his home. He is fiercely against any attempt to control or destroy it, and will do anything to prevent it from happening.

Richter is the first character Skif meets after the introductory sequence, where he tosses the latter a bolt in order to navigate out of the anomaly field he woke up in. After talking to him, he will run to the Cabin and search the dead Wardens for a sensor.

Trivia

  • He was first revealed in the Gamescom 2023 demo along with the accompanying Bolts & Bullets trailer. In the demo and trailer, he drops a bolt for Skif so that he may guide his way and escape the anomaly field he woke up in. He was later the main character featured in the Not A Paradise trailer, where he meets Skif on the Slag Heap and talks about the Zone and Prypiat.
  • While his age isn’t officially confirmed, Richter is likely no older than 27 or 28 by the events of Heart of Chornobyl. His biography states he escaped from a foster house, implying he either left before or when he turned 18, and that he's been in the Zone for nearly ten years.
  • The scar visible on Richter’s head and neck is identical to a natural phenomenon referred to as a Lichtenberg figure. Lichtenberg figures are formed from lightning strikes or high-voltage electrical breakdowns, leaving branching fractal patterns in the materials affected.[12]
