Rusty is a burly cowboy and ranch hand for Mr. Granger.
History
Along with Pablo, he worked the mustang drive from Miradero to Rancho Conejo the year that the PAL went on the drive,[1] and also looked after the ramada when Mr. Granger was out of town on business (though he duly gave credit to Pru for looking after the Arabian mares Mr. Granger had bought for resale to a buyer).[2]
On the mustang drive, Rusty and Pablo were initially annoyed by Abigail's talkativeness and her saccharine make-believe stories about the horses on the drive. The cowboys decided to indulge Abigail so as not to make her feel bad. By the end of the drive, however, Rusty seemed genuinely interested in the fabricated scuttlebutt Abigail had to offer on the horses.[1]
Rusty was estranged from his mama, but after the mustang drive, and in particular after Abigail pointed out that one mare, Rosie, was brought back together with her estranged mom by the drama of a stampede at the end of the drive, Rusty resolved to make up with his own mama.[1]
