The Whisp[1] (ブンブン[2] Bun-bun?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, fly-based Badnik model created by Dr. Robotnik.
Appearance
The Whisps resemble a flying insect, most likely a fly. They have small, blue bodies with two wings connected above each of them. Also, the rear of this Badnik model contains a grey/yellow motor. The Whisps also each have six mechanical legs as three on each side. They also have two red compound eyes and a yellow mouth each.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
The first appearance of this Badnik was in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where it served as an enemy. This time around, this Badnik is referred to as Whisp[1] (ブンブン[2] Bun-bun?). In this game, the player encounters them on the routes above the water sections of Aquatic Ruin Zone.
In gameplay, the Whisps fly around in swarms of three or five. They are usually positioned near jumps where the player has little protection from them. Whisps will start following and fly down to attack the player, but will not follow the player underwater. Also, if they chase the playable character for long enough, they will fly away. However, Whisps can easily be destroyed one by one with the Spin Jump or while charging a Spin Dash. Also, upon their destruction, they release an Animal.

Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure
Whisps make their latest appearance in the Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure, as these fly Badniks are featured at routes above the water of Aquatic Relix Zone, which is almost identical to Aquatic Ruin Zone with its gimmicks and Badniks. In the game, Whisps appear now by themselves instead of in groups with three of them. Despite its blue and white appearance, Whisps appear to have same attack pattern. Also, upon their destruction, they release an Animal.

Sonic the Comic
In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, the Whisps are a part of Dr. Robotnik's Badnik army. They only appeared a few times during the comic's run. One time, they attacked Sonic when he tried to investigate the Aquatic Ruin Zone. Years later, many more would ambush the Freedom Fighters over Flickies' Island.

Trivia
- Whisp's Japanese name, "Bun-bun", is the Japanese onomatopoeia for buzzing.
- Whisps were going to reappear in Sonic Mania, but were cut from the game. Here, they would have acted like Shutterbugs.[3]
- In the Stay Sonic book, it is claimed that the Whisps are "a microlite version" of the Buzzers. However, due to this book being from the early Sonic canon, this claim is most likely non-canonical.
