Reploid

This group exists primarily or exclusively within the Archie Comics continuity.
Information in this article may not be canonical to the storyline of the games or any other Sonic continuity.

Reploids are a group that appear in the Mega Man comic series, and the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs, published by Archie Comics. They are a highly advanced type of robot from the future of Mega Man's World, possessing unlimited free will and mental capacities comparable to humans.

X was the first Reploid, created as Dr. Light's magnum opus. Years after X was sealed away, he was discovered by Dr. Cain, who used X's specs as a reference to create more Reploids, populating the world with them. Some Reploids began to malfunction or become violent, becoming known as Mavericks, which led to the formation of the Maverick Hunters, an organization that polices Mavericks. Tragedy struck when Sigma, the leader of the Hunters, chose to go Maverick and start a mass rebellion against the humans. Ever since then, X and his allies, Zero and Axl, have fought to bring peace between humans and Reploids.[1]

History

The conflict between the Mavericks and the Hunters eventually expanded to other worlds. During a Hunter attack on Sigma's fortress, Sigma managed to beam his programming to the Lost Hex above Sonic's World through a Genesis Portal.[2] X, Zero, and Axl attempted to pursue him with help from Silver the Hedgehog, but ended up on Seaside Island instead.[3] Fortunately, an unlikely alliance with Team Sticks enabled them to travel to Sonic's World, which was in the process of being merged together with Mega Man's World in the year 20XX. The two forces soon joined the Freedom Fighters and various Robot Masters under Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man aboard the Sky Patrol, and the two groups set out to stop Sigma's plan. In response, however, Sigma began recreating every Maverick that had previously served him.[4][5] Eventually, Sigma and his Maverick armies were defeated, and Xander Payne's actions resulted in the conflict being erased from history, returning the Reploids to their world with no memory of the events.[6]

Trivia

  • Despite being created before the term "Reploid" was coined, both X and Zero consistently refer to themselves as Reploids, and are treated as Reploids by others. This dispels the misconception that X and Zero are not Reploids.
