Metal-o-Turtle

A rhinoceros beetle that calmly rolls around

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Metal-o-Turtle[1] (ドカブトン[2] Dokabuton?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, rhinoceros beetle-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance

Despite their western name, Metal-o-Turtles are based on Japanese rhinoceros beetles. They have blue armor, yellow pincers with red claws, and a large cephalic horn on their heads. They move around with pair of tracked wheels underneath their bodies.

Overview

The Metal-o-Turtles make their only appearance in Sonic Chaos, where they can be exclusively encountered in Gigalopolis Zone. In gameplay, all the Metal-o-Turtles do is simply move back and forth. They do not have any proactive offense other than harming the player upon destruction.

The player can easily defeat the Metal-o-Turtles using a Spin Jump or Spin Attack. Like every Badnik in the Master System/Game Gear games, they do not have Animals as energy sources.

Powers and abilities

The Metal-o-Turtles are capable of basic movement using the wheels on their undersides. Other than that, they are highly vulnerable.

Trivia

  • Despite the fact that they appear to be based on a beetle rather than a turtle, the name "Metal-o-Turtle" most likely refers to these Badniks in the Gigapolis Zone description in the English Game Gear manual, since the only other Badnik that appears in that zone is this game's equivalent of the Buzz Bombers.
  • The Metal-o-Turtle's Japanese name, "Dokabuton," is derived from doku, meaning "to make way," and kabutomushi, meaning Japanese rhinoceros beetle.
