Description
Terry leaps towards his opponent with his leading arm extended and with energy surrounding his fist, knocking the opponent down. Depending on the game, Terry will say either "Burn Knuckle!" or "Burning!". Stronger button versions have Terry throw his arms back-and-outward before leap-punching forward.
Starting with The King of Fighters XIII, Burn Knuckle gains an EX Special Move variant, which allows it to deal more damage and travel farther.
In many of the 2D games, the energy from Terry's fist is blue-colored, though in his later years via his Garou: Mark of the Wolves version and in KOF XIII, the energy is colored yellow akin to the rest of his attacks instead.
Strategy
The strength and distance of the move depends on which button is pressed. The version travels a short distance speed, while the
version travels much farther, at the cost of longer recovery time after performing the move (and Terry also brings his arms up and slightly back before the punch as an indicator).
For the most part, it is solely meant as a combo ender and/or gap-closing punisher with the knockdown it provides and the speed it travels at. Otherwise, whiffing this attack or most of all having it blocked can leave Terry prone to punishment, but it also increases his threat range and prevents foes from being able to throw out buttons recklessly to eat a Burn Knuckle in response.
In the Fatal Fury series, Burn Knuckle can be feinted out, although the input varies from game to game;
+
in FF3
+
in RB1~S
+
in RB2
or
+
in MoW. Downwards version feints the strong-button version (where Terry moves his arms up and back), while the forward version feints the weak-button version (kneels down a bit with his leading fist brought back). The former/downward feint moves him back a bit, while the latter/forward version is vital in Terry's Feint Cancel pressure due to nudging him forward while having faster recovery.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Burning Knuckle can also be performed while in midair. When inputted as +
/
, it will become even stronger, with subtle green-yellow trails added to the blue energy flames. If Burning Knuckle reaches the ledge, it will often hang there for a moment, though using it next to a ledge can allow it to go off-stage. While it has a bit of startup, it very powerful, with the input version being able to KO opponents at low percentages. Like his other Special Moves, Terry can perform a Burn Knuckle out of certain standard attacks, as part of his special move canceling mechanic.
