“ | Ornette's always been good at fashioning extraordinary things out of ordinary materials. I suppose it runs in the family. Her mother had a great interest in sculpture. | ” |
Alice Lost was a woman who lived in Stain'd-by-the-Sea before she died in a fire. She was a sculptor, the wife of Prosper Lost, and the mother of Ornette.
Biography
Alice was married to Prosper Lost, and either the sister or sister-in-law of one or both of the Talkies, Stain'd-by-the-Sea's official firefighters. She and Prosper had a daughter, Ornette, who shared her mother's interest in sculpture, though she seemed to prefer paper creations.
Alice was a sculptress, and she kept a collection of statues, many of which were her own, in the Far West Wing of her husband's inn, The Lost Arms. She hoped that the glyptotheca would attract tourists to the town.
A fire began in the West Wing, damaging the hotel. While Ornette managed to get the rest of the guests and staff to safety, Alice perished as the only casualty of the fire.[1] Following her death, Prosper sent Ornette to live with her Uncles.[2]
Trivia
- Her name could be a reference to the Lewis Carroll 1865 novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which features a suitably lost girl named Alice.
- While it is not stated, it is probable that the statue noted to be in the lobby of The Lost Arms- that of a naked, headless and armless woman[3]- was either sculpted by or collected by Alice.
