Ezzo Cadner (エッゾ・カドナー) is a mage and a member of the Felt Camp, officially serving as their strategist and as a teacher to Felt. He plays a supporting role in Arc 9.
Ezzo has short, dark green hair, red eyes, a short stature, and an intelligent countenance. Although many dwarves, including Ezzo himself, look childish, he is actually approaching the end of his twenties.
Personality
Ezzo is a mage with plenty of pride in his craft, as he had mastered many forms of magic, becoming one of the highest-rated mages in the country. He has a logical and pragmatic nature, yet also a compassionate and charitable side to him, which he shows with his desire to act as a teacher to the disadvantaged. He abhors injustice and pursues retribution when he feels someone is wronged, whether it is himself or someone else. He is also rather scholarly when it comes to things that may be related to magic and prideful when it comes to techniques he has developed, showing them off while grinning and explaining their functions. His goal is to take the four color titles of Red, Green, Yellow, and Blue from Roswaal L. Mathers and Ferris respectively, as he believes they are indifferent to the development of magic. To that end, he has written a number of magic theories and attempted to construct techniques that will ease the difficulty of learning magic.
He can be cautious and perceptive, as he correctly decided not to act with aggression once Emilia, Puck, and Beatrice found him wandering suspiciously in the mansion, noticing that he could not win against them as they were better magicians. However, he changed his mind after Roswaal easily cleared his test. It is because of his pride, skill, and knowledge that Ezzo dislikes his alias, as it essentially declares that he is inferior as a magician since Grey means he is not a master of any color of magic. He also envies higher grade magicians, as he disliked Roswaal for possessing colors as titles and attempted to usurp his titles, initially thinking that Roswaal was a fraud.
Despite this, Ezzo has shown to be a respectful person to others, as he acknowledged both Al and Subaru at the Pleiades Watchtower and spoke respectfully to both of them. He also showed respect towards the former’s master, after hearing of her demise, and upon learning that he wished to read her Book of the Dead, he was fully ready to stop Al if he was hesitant about it, as reading said book would be an invasion of her privacy and contrary to her wishes.
History
He was first seen between Arc 2 and Arc 3, attempting to steal Roswaal's titles for his own benefit by attempting to trap him into a Meteor so that he could claim a defeat on the most powerful sorcerer of the kingdom and claim his titles. This failed horribly, as he had imprisoned Rem and Subaru (dressed as Roswaal), instead of Ram and Roswaal as he originally intended.
After Arc 3, Ezzo was in Flanders. He was taken advantage of by Camberley, who left him penniless, causing him to take up a position as a bodyguard for the Flower Prison Garden. He began tutoring the organization's prostitutes to help them learn reading, writing, and arithmetic skills out of a compassionate desire to aid them. Ezzo had another run-in with Camberley several days later, attacking him on the spot, only to be stopped by Reinhard, who was accompanying Felt on a courtesy visit to each of the three organizations that made up Flanders' Big Three. He attended the knight and candidate duo's meeting with Toto, the Flower Prison Garden's proprietress, getting to know them before and during their discussion with her. On one night a few days later, a lackey of a high-ranking member of The Balance fatally wounded one of Ezzo's students, Mimosa, and killed the customer connected to the Black Silver Coin that she had been with. He cast healing magic on her to ease her pain before her inevitable death, but he was promptly attacked by the murderer. The magic he attempted to cast had no effect on the man due to his having the same Excess Mana Circulation Constitution as Reinhard. The man set fire to the brothel and Ezzo was left as the suspected culprit.
He escaped the red-light district with Camberley's help and confronted Helaine Gatness, exchanging the unpublished magic theories he had created in exchange for an abandoned mansion to use as a safe house. Felt, Reinhard, Flam Remendis, and Rachins Hoffman acquired the information of Ezzo's location from Helaine and met him at the mansion, where he engaged in a clash with Reinhard. Though ultimately ending in his failure, he successfully bypassed Reinhard's Excess Mana Circulation Constitution by rewriting the composition of a magic spell mid-casting. Ezzo proceeded to inform them of the truth of the fire at the brothel and requested their help in his pursuit of revenge for Mimosa's death. When they were surrounded at the mansion, he made a mask and wove a Cognitive Disruption spell within it so Reinhard could fend off their attackers. He made use of another mask with the same technique when he and Flam accompanied Rachins to his face-off with Helaine. When given the chance, he successfully defeated the arson who framed him by using the same method he used to land magic on Reinhard and took revenge for Mimosa, leaving the man's fate to Manfred Madison. In the end, Ezzo rejected Manfred's offer to join The Balance and instead decided to join the Felt Camp, going back to Flanders in his free time twice a month to continue his tutorship hobby.
In the aftermath of the Battle for Priestella, he took part in an investigation alongside Garfiel Tinzel, Liliana Masquerade, and Ricardo Welkin in the catacombs beneath Priestella to search for the remains of a Witch, as it had been previously targeted and needed to be placed in a safe location. After several tribulations and overcoming the Witch’s trial, they successfully managed to retrieve the withered arm and brought it back above ground.
Shortly after the successful Pleiades Watchtower Expedition, Ezzo took part in a follow-up expedition alongside Felt, Reinhard, Flam and Grassis Remendis, Meili Portroute, and the little scorpion Shaula. There, they investigated the Taygeta library and met the senile Divine Dragon Volcanica. They’d also noticed the same birds that had been flying around the tower. After Shaula killed one with her stinger, Ezzo discovered the birds’ nature and ordered for them to all be killed, which he and Reinhard got to immediately. Deciding to report what they found, Felt took most of the group back to the Royal Capital while Ezzo remained behind with Flam.
Abilities
Magic (魔法, Mahō): Ezzo is able to use multiple magic affinities, including Wind, Water, Fire, Earth, and Yang. He is a talented magic user who regards himself as the second-best mage in the Kingdom behind Roswaal L. Mathers. He does not need to utilize incantations and is skilled enough to disguise the chant of one spell as another spell. Ezzo can cast several high-level magic spells in quick succession or at the same time, and he can rearrange the magic composition of a spell while casting it, though doing the latter results in him receiving multiple lacerations.
Ul Goa (ウル・ゴーア): Ezzo fires a large number of powerful fire bullets. A powerful flame scatters when the bullets land.
El Shiha (エル・シーハ): Ezzo gathers water from the atmosphere to bind a target in place.
Cognitive Disruption (認識阻害, Ninshiki Sogai): A spell effect that can be woven into objects, such as cloaks or masks. It inhibits people from being able to recognize the person wearing the object that the spell is enchanted into.
Magic Composition Rewriting: Ezzo can rewrite a spell's composition. The only condition to successfully pull off the rewriting of a magic spell's composition is making physical contact with the spell itself. By changing the composition of a spell mid-casting, it is possible for Ezzo to disassemble a spell into mana, absorbing it through his own gate. Furthermore, by utilizing this magic technique, he was even able to circumvent the effects of Reinhard's Excess Mana Circulation Constitution and land a blow on the Sword Saint with magic.
Silencing Magic: An application of Yang Magic that makes a person’s voice so high that it cannot be picked up by the ear.
Flying Magic ( 飛行魔法, Hikō Mahō): By combining earth, wind, and yang magics, Ezzo could float in the air, or, if he wished to do so, fly. It's not something he can do on the spot.
Excellent Intuition: Ezzo is very experienced, to the point that he can determine a person’s relative power level shortly after meeting them. He was even able to somewhat determine the ability of Al’s Authority as something separate from magic after a short confrontation with him.
Equipment
White Fox's Nest (白狐の巣): A meteor which captures people and makes them do trials based on the owner's magical experience and mana. The targets can not escape unless the trial is finished or once the user considers that the subjects failed the trials and allow them to escape, the targets of the meteor cannot die within the trials. Once the trials start, more subjects cannot be imprisoned until the trials inside it are over either due to failure or success. He has used this meteor to imprison both Rem and Subaru at the same time in the past. When activated, the person using the meteor cannot use any magic or they will be released from the trial.
Trivia
Ezzo underwent a major redesign in Tanpenshuu Volume 10, having his hair changed from grey-brown to green and being given a completely new uniform.
