"Life Expectancy" (ライフエクスペクタンシー Raifu Ekusupekutanshī) is the second chapter of the PPPPPP manga series.
Summary
It's been four days since school started and the matriculation ceremony, physical exams and other things are all finished. That means classes officially start today. The Shibuya Music High School is a high school where students primarily study music and a variety of music classes is offered. Today, a Tuesday, Lucky Sonoda's first class is ear training. The teacher plays a piece three times and they have to write what they hear onto staff. Lucky is called to write it on the board but he didn't get a single note. Ear training is split into two levels and he is in the lower-level class. He sees Ako Furusu in another classroom and she got it perfect the first time around.
Lucky goes to visit his mum, Chocho Sonoda at Hino Hospital and the Otogami sextuplets pianists are on TV. His mum says she loved when they all played piano together and asks how school was. Lucky said it was fun and he has Practicum tomorrow. As he leaves, he overhears the nurses say his mum has only one year left to live.
Lucky gets to school and is crying after hearing the news. He is told to go to the teacher he was assigned for Practicum and Hideo Dada is there. He asks Lucky what is wrong and he says nothing is and starts punching himself. Dada is shocked and asks Lucky to play the three pieces of music from his entrance exam. His first two are mediocre but his "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" is amazing and Dada can even see the Otogami children and Mimin asking "What is it, mum?" Lucky declares he wants to become a pianist within a year before his mum dies. He wants his mum to see all seven of them playing piano together again. Dada explains how he can enter inside his "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" as if it is a frame in a movie.
Dada calls for someone to come in now and Furusu walks in. Dada explains there is a rule that he takes on one student from each grade so he has to decide between the best, Furusu, and the worst, Sonoda. That means Furusu and Sonoda have to compete to decide who will be taught by Dada. They will play the piece Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte in a couple of weeks.
