Chapter 1

"Mediocre Lucky" (ボンサイラッキー Bonsai Rakkī) is the first chapter of the PPPPPP manga series.

Summary

On December 21st, fraternal septuplets were born. All seven loved playing the piano and all except Lucky Sonoda became brilliant pianists.

Lucky Sonoda is at school. A friend invites him to the new arcade but he turns them down as he has to walk the dog, clean the house and fix the roof. He lives with his Aunt who makes him do lots of chores around the house. His parents split up after an argument about Lucky so he went to live with his mother while the rest of his siblings lived with their father. However, shortly after his mother's health deteriorated which is why he lives with his Aunt. He was forbidden by his Aunt to play the piano but he plays secretly when he visits his mother at hospital. His mother always asks him to play as she loved watching all seven of her children play piano together. Lucky cries and apologises to his mother as he believes everything is his fault.

Back at school, a friend asks Lucky if he finished the form about what he's doing next year. Lucky says he's not going to high school. He overhears a girl talking about the Otogami and gets nervous as no one knows he's an Otogami. He says goodbye to his friends and as he leaves he hear's a performance by his eldest sibling. A girl called Ako Furusu who mentioned the Otogami before was playing it out on speaker. The song was Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 26 in D major, K. 537. They both saw Palatial steps instead of normal steps through the visual music of the eldest Otogami. Furusu says she plays the piano and Masashi shows up shouting that Lucky is late. They are going to Shibuya Music High School for orientation. There is an amazing teacher there.

Lucky goes back to the hospital to visit his mother who is awake. She apologises that she wasn't able to give birth to Lucky as a genius which causes Lucky to start crying. Some nurses say Chocho Sonoda's medication has been changed and she only has a couple of years left. Lucky's mum tells him to become a pianist to show he can become a pianist even though he's mediocre now as she loves the way he plays the piano.

From then on he ignored his Aunt's orders, fought with Masashi and took lessons from a teacher. He goes to the Shibuya Music High School Entrance Exam. For the audition you have to play Back's well-tempered Clavier, Chopin's Études and a choice of your own music. His choice is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The seven of them used to play variations of the song together which would make his mum smile. One of the judges, Hideo Dada, stands up and is unable to drink. He can see all of the siblings stood around the piano and even hear's one say "What is it, mom?".

The judges say he played poorly or rather weirdly. He played very softly with a very unsophisticated sound. Dada is the only one who felt something special from his "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". The judges complain everyone is mediocre this year. Dada believes there is nothing wrong with mediocrity as it forces people to fight using their life experiences and that mediocrity can surpass talent. Dada thinks Lucky is interesting and his experimental-visual music spoke to him. He also notices his surname was "Sonoda" but the kids were the Otogami family.

Back in the hospital Lucky receives a letter of acceptance and is very excited. His mum is happy for him and it turns out Masashi didn't get accepted. Lucky thanks his mum and says he is going to be a pianist.
