Wendigo

Wendigo is an enemy in Phoenotopia: Awakening. They are killing machines known for their razor-sharp claws, the ability to cloak themselves in illusory light, and most notably being indestructible. Wendigos appear only in the Ancient GEO Base, Scorched Lands, and overworld battles within the Scorched Lands Region.

Behavior

Wendigos normally wander around patrolling the area they are in. When alerted, whether by hearing sounds of explosions or seeing Gail, they would begin tracking and chasing down Gail regardless of her current position. They could also turn invisible, which renders them intangible and immune to all attacks. While they would not emerge when Gail is standing still, Wendigos would teleport very close to her and begin attacking shall she move again.

Strategy

Despite their simple attack pattern of a double claw-swipe, Wendigos' high attack speed and movement speed allow them to accumulate damage to Gail very quickly, making them one of the most dangerous enemies in the entire game. Even so, this attack is easily avoidable by calmly jumping away or over its head.

While it is true that destroying a Wendigo seems impossible, repelling one is feasible by striking it with powerful attacks for 13 times. Each attack has to deal more than 10 DMG for it to be effective, even if all hits would appear to deal 0 DMG (or 1 DMG for the last hit). One of the safest approaches includes throwing Sonic Spear when out of its reach. While a Golem Core would drop whenever a Wendigo flees, it is advisable to instead leave the scene as soon as being noticed, seeing how dangerous the Wendigos can be.

Trivia

  • As with many of the enemies in Phoenotopia Awakening, Wendigo's name was chosen by reddit user "thomar" during the naming contest 04. [1] [2]
  • Wendigos are only mentioned twice within the game in the Last Wall: By a soldier reminding Gail to be cautious of their abilities before entering the Scorched Lands Region, and by a soldier in the dining commons who witnessed a fight between a Wendigo and Wrecker that ended with the Wendigo escaping and leaving behind its torn off arm.
  • Like with the name "Golems" and "Ghouls", which came after mythical beings, the stalker robots take on the name "Wendigo" from folklore in real world as well [3], likely because most people within the Phoenotopia: Awakening universe do not understand the concept of machinery.
