CHICKEN? is an enemy in OMORI. They are one of the many foes found within DINO'S DIG, specifically at the third and fourth levels of the attraction.
PROFILE
CHICKEN? takes on the appearance of an actual real-life chicken. It usually is shown attempting to flee whenever the party approaches it. Unlike most other enemies, it has no animation, and is instead just a still image.
STORY
Two CHICKENS? appear on the third floor of DINO'S DIG, in which they will try to avoid the party if approached in close proximity. The most important CHICKEN? to defeat is the one on the fourth floor.
It yields far more experience and clams than the other two in the level below, on top of the CHICKEN BALL, but it's unique in that it will never respawn. Defeating it on the fourth floor is necessary to obtain the Ain't nobody here but us chickens achievement. If allowed to flee you essentially lose the CHICKEN BALL and its associated achievement unless you reload.

SKILL | NOTES | EMOTION | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
NEUTRAL | HAPPY | SAD | ANGRY | ||
RUN AWAY | CHICKEN? runs away. | 90% | 90% | 0% | 90% |
DO NOTHING | CHICKEN? clucks. | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% |
Every turn, each enemy will start by trying to use the skill listed at the top. If the calculation fails, they move on to the second skill and so on, until reaching the final skill which is guaranteed to activate. Each calculation is done independently from the previous ones, so the added percentage is not 100%.
STRATEGY
You have two ways to outspeed the CHICKEN? The first is OMORI's LUCKY SLICE skill, which goes first. Equip him with the DAISY, HEART STRING or WEDDING RING to start the fight HAPPY and increase its damage. If it crits you can take down the CHICKEN? in one shot while being around LEVEL 25, or LEVEL 38 without crits. You can also equip OMORI with FINGER or PUNCHING BAG to start ANGRY, as ANGRY can increase ATTACK to deal more damage and it will not decrease HIT RATE.
Your other option is to increase KEL's speed. A Level 36-37 KEL equipped with the BEACH BALL and RABBIT FOOT should be able to reach those numbers. CONTRACT or CHARMS providing initial HAPPY are alternative that works at a lower LEVEL with BEACH BALL. Nail the CHICKEN? with a RICOCHET and you can take it out in one shot. You can also let KEL use POETRY BOOK to inflict SAD on CHICKEN? to prevent it from running away then defeat it with the whole party, which is not affected by lower HIT RATE from HAPPY. Note that a CHICKEN? has a 12.5% chance to be initially HAPPY, in that case its SPEED will be 25% greater than the default SPEED. If KEL's SPEED is insufficient for such a CHICKEN? it should be beaten by OMORI. In order to deal more damage to HAPPY CHICKEN? OMORI should be SAD. For that, it is recommended to equip him with DEEP POETRY BOOK.
Because a non-SAD CHICKEN? has a 10% chance to do nothing instead of running away, and a SAD CHICKEN? never runs away, it is also possible to simply retry the fight over and over until the CHICKEN? does nothing on its turn, allowing the whole party to attack, which should deal more than 150 damage.
Because the CHICKEN?s on the 3rd floor will respawn upon leaving the room, and provide 9000 EXP per victory on ONE DAY LEFT, they constitute one of the most efficient EXP farming methods in the game, given KEL has enough speed to defeat them consistently.

TRIVIA
- Note that when fighting a CHICKEN? on ONE DAY LEFT, they will always start the battle with no unique emotion state, which greatly contrasts the other DINO'S DIG enemies that do have this condition. It is unknown if this is an oversight or intentionally left by the developers.
- Defeating the CHICKEN? at the top of DINO'S DIG will give you the CHICKEN BALL weapon for KEL, and an ACHIEVEMENT. However, if it runs away, it vanishes completely. Therefore making CHICKEN BALL unobtainable.
- The achievement Ain't nobody here but us chickens is a reference to the song of the same name from Alex Kramer and Joan Whitney. The song was also notably sung in The Muppet Show.
- The CHICKEN? is one of the few enemies that uses an actual photo of a real-life creature for its appearance instead of the artstyle the game uses. The other five consist of RABBIT?, WASP, HOUSEFLY, BIG STRONG TREE and THE EARTH.
- Like with the other enemies in DINO'S DIG, it has more EXP on ONE DAY LEFT (OMORI ROUTE).
- In the game's data, CHICKEN? has four total variants, though only three of them are used in-game. The unused variant shares the same stats as the ones fought on ONE DAY LEFT, the only difference being that it drops 6000 EXP upon defeat.
- There originally existed a bug where the RABBIT? and CHICKEN? were not recorded into the FOE FACTS! journal when encountering them during the OMORI ROUTE. This was fixed starting with the V1.0.2 Patch Update, which was released on January 9th, 2021.
