One day, Vaati learned of a special hat that would grant all of his wishes. Tempted by its powers, he stole it and used it to turn his master into a hat in an attempt to stop him from interfering with his plans. Vaati then used the hat's magic to take the shape of a hylian sorcerer, planning to take control of the Light Force at the Picori Festival in Hyrule. Vaati participated in a sword-fighting tournament and was allowed to see the Bound Chest after winning it. Believing the chest contained the Light Force he opened it, releasing monsters into Hyrule. Realizing his mistake he leaves to search elsewhere, but not before destroying the Picori Blade and turning Princess Zelda into stone.
